About Thora And The Hound Of Asgard

Norse Mythology with a twist. With Loki, trolls, some stuff from the Edda, dwarves, a fire giant and a gender reassignment Thor. What’s not to like?

I researched this from Old Norse-Icelandic literature and then set off from there. A lot of it is made up, and my interpretation of the original texts would probably give an academic fits. There are certainly more dogs in my story and Ragnarok doesn’t go quite as well as predicted.

I’m also acutely aware that I’m not Scandinavian and my grasp of the properties of trolls may not be as intuitive as a native. I have looked into troll stuff quite a bit though, and as far as I can tell there is a subspecies of troll which can turn invisible. These are the Tusser folk. Regarding their specific skills, it’s still probably best to file that under creative license though.

Part of the fun of researching this was finding all the bits Tolkien lifted from the sagas to populate The Lord Of The Rings. I won’t spoil any surprises but there are some nice moments. The way I view it, if we both nicked off Snorri Sturluson then that should make it ok.

Who would I say this book is for? I’d probably go 13+. It wasn’t written as a young adult novel but my nieces are that age and I thought it should be made ok for them. But there are also moments such as the Thor Play scene in which the characters go into an adult store. I would imagine it’s advisory.

Anyone who likes the trinity of Gaiman, Pratchett and Douglas Adams might find something to enjoy here. As potentially could D&D gamers, bored commuters, Ragnarok enablers and people who dress up in Viking hats including the Q’Anon shaman.

Fantasy and science fiction have always been my favorites. Especially those from the era of dime novels and genre magazines, the time when both were still deemed fringe. Those stories spark the imagination and bring a reader to worlds and concepts beyond his reality. Though I have to admit, reality is fast catching up with science fiction.

Chitra Padmana, who’s a doctorate in Chemistry, started her writing journey at the age of nine when her grandmother found her journal filled with wild scribblings and decided to publish it as a series of two books. Tony describes himself as a ‘refugee’ from the city of Flint, Michigan, a place once considered to be the Mecca of America’s blue collar workforce; though now, a town whose name has become synonymous with terms like ‘crime,’ ‘poverty,’ ‘urban decay’ and ‘bad water.’

By the late 1980’s Tony found himself in Oklahoma City, where he was soon to gain a ‘dubious’ honor: he was the highest earning bartender in three states. So his employers would tolerate his propensity for ‘witnessing’ to customers and co-workers from across the bar—on one occasion, even to a professed Satan worshiper, with the consecration scars on his chest to prove it. Tony would tell these people he would encounter about how Jesus could change their lives. For this, he was denied membership at a local church— “Because he fraternized with sinners.”

In the 1990’s in Albuquerque, Tony once had occasion to break traditional ‘fry-bread’ with a very old Native American couple in their modest pueblo home on the reservation. They talked about religions, about ‘hospitality,’ and about the priceless thousand year old clay pots that lined on their modest mantle.

In the 2000’s in Indianapolis, Tony went from having no job, no home of his own, and being about $40,000 in debt, to owning a portfolio of investment properties; all within just a few years. Tony continued in his witnessing efforts, speaking to tenants and to the working poor, whom he would help to purchase their very own first homes.
