At the mention of books, John W. Nichols’ ears perk up, he gets a spine-tingling sensation (no pun intended), and he can’t help but find out what read is on discussion. Trana Mathews is my pen name. There is already an author named Diane Hildebrandt who writes technical reference books, so I decided to use my mother’s family surname. Besides, I think Mathews is easier to spell than Hildebrandt. While I was searching for an “old-fashioned” first name to go with the Mathews surname, a very dear friend suggested, then gave me permission to use her grandmother’s name.

I lived most of my life in Northwest Indiana. I worked at a local water company for over a decade before I headed into Chicago where I worked at several public accounting firms. At age 50, I obtained a B.S. in Computer Information Systems from Indiana University Northwest. My two adult children were born while I lived in Northwest Indiana.

After I retired, I moved to beautiful southeastern Arizona and began writing about my third great-grandfather, because his life had always fascinated me. My original plan was to start with his diary of a journey from Massachusetts to Ohio in 1798. Further research led to my discovery of actual letters written between family members which are contained within Marietta College’s Legacy Library. My focus shifted to his entire family.

Because of my research of Massachusetts birth, marriage, and death records, I found many genealogy sites had misinformation, so I became a WikiTree genealogist. This helped me organize where I’ve found my information!

I’m a confirmed “bookaholic”. Yes, I do know the proper term is bibliophile. But, it seems to me, words with the -phile suffix have a sinister connotation. I’m a firm believer in promoting literacy and am an active member of Friends of the Huachuca City Library.

I’m a member of several writing groups and am involved with my community. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, crafting, and playing cards. While cribbage is my favorite game, dirty board (also known as pegs & jokers) is a close second.

My novels are 18th century historical fiction based upon known facts about my ancestors. Dr. Increase is the second novel in this family saga trilogy.

EARLY LIFE

I was born in Ventura, California in 1966 and moved to Northern California shortly thereafter. The first 12 years of my life were spent in a fairly rural area of the upper Napa Valley. I rode horses, had chickens and goats, and pretty much lived in the woods that surrounded our home. When I was 12, my family moved to Napa proper where I attended a private school through 10th grade. I attended Napa High School my junior and senior year where I played football before joining the Marine Corps in 1986.

CAREER

Once I graduated boot camp, I was assigned to the third battalion first Marines where I almost immediately deployed on a Westpac. My job at the time was an anti-tank gunner or 0351 for you Jarheads out there. When I returned to the States, I transferred to STA (Surveillance Target Acquisition) Platoon. I deployed one more time before my separation from active duty.

After the Marine Corps, I returned to Napa where I put myself through a basic police academy while washing cars after school and on the weekends in order to survive. Law enforcement jobs were scarce back in the early 1990s so I went to work for a small, yet extremely violent, town called East Palo Alto (EPA). I worked in EPA for a little under three years before making lateral move to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

While at the Sheriff’s Office, I worked in a Street Crimes Suppression Team, SWAT, Narcotics, and Homicide. I promoted to Sergeant and worked several other positions in that rank until being promoted to Lieutenant. As a Sheriff’s Lieutenant, I worked my final two years in law enforcement as a team Lieutenant in the jails.

WRITING

My interest in writing reared its head in 1994 while I was working the graveyard shift in the Maguire Correctional Facility shortly after being hired by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. I taught myself to write screen plays during that time and wrote several feature lengths scripts. I never pursued the sale of any my screenplays and ultimately decided to write a novel after realizing how many constraints are placed on screenplays. As I neared the end of my career in law enforcement, I began writing my first book that ended up having several names before finally turning into “A World Slowed.”

FAMILY

While working in Homicide, I met my wonderful wife who was working for the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office at the time. My wife and I have three children—each of them so special, captivating, funny, and hard working. My family is my legacy. In my spare time, I enjoy watching movies (or at least the preview to movies, which drives my wife crazy) and playing hockey. There’s nothing like a hockey-loving-Napa-boy to confuse traditional hockey players.

Ron Yates has been learning to write for most of his life. He produced good essays in high school, but his adolescent energies were largely devoted to drag racing, drinking beer, and trying to stay out of trouble.

Although encouraged by his English teachers to pursue higher education, Yates, after graduating high school in lackluster fashion, spent time languishing in factory jobs. Anna “Annina” Lorenzi born in Milan on a rainy Monday morning, the 26th of October, 1981. She went to – or, better yet, “went to” – two years of classical studies high school, followed by four years of artistic studies high school; without, in any event, being able to resist dedicating herself to her passions. Passions such as writing, music, photography, her beloved dogs, engines, travelling and nature. Talking about work, she really does “a little bit of everything,” so much so that, together with some friends, she founded a company in Texas that deals with classic cars.

Her lengthy experiences as a writer include texts, poems, short and long stories, fairy tales, articles, selections in literary competitions, and publications in anthologies, as well as in magazines and Italian blogs.

On 19 May 2020, “Incontrando Laura. Un romanzo liberamente e in parte ispirato alla vita di…” was released, accompanied by its English edition “Meeting Laura. A novel loosely and partially inspired by the life of…” professionally translated by Starleen K. Meyer. They are independent self-publications, both available in paperback and Kindle eBook versions, in all Amazon stores. The two respective audio books are expected for 2021.

In August 2020, Anna began working on the sequel of “Meeting Laura” and on a completely different side project, which she decided to prioritize:

Before explaining who, I am, I would like to explain to you why I started writing books.

It all starts with what happened to me some time ago, when I finished my studies, opened my Advertising and Marketing agency and was about to get married.

My obsession was: “I lack nothing and soon I will have a family, I will have children, I will grow old… is that all?” I was looking for something in my life that was escaping me or that I was goddamn missing, yes… but what?

One day, while I am drinking a coffee at the usual bar, there a stranger elderly, with an unkempt beard and a drink in his hand, talks to me and tell me a lot of things, some nonsense, others that didn’t interest me at all, but at some point, among so many things he said, only one word struck me. He kept talking to me; I nodded but my brain was stuck in that word of only three letters. Something that I had never thought of and that was completely missing in my life but that could be the turning point, that of profound change.

Taken by the enthusiasm, as soon as I arrived at the office, I searched in Google on that three-letter word because I wanted to know more but, I soon discovered that I was about to enter a world of information, so much that I was confused and misled from obtaining the goal: to understand how that word could really help me achieve what was missing in my life. Tired and disappointed, I fell asleep in front of the computer.

When I woke up, doubts assailed me. Is it possible that that word is the turning point in my life? What if I’m wrong? Pursuing useless thoughts was not my style and thinking about a thousand other failures in the search for “what is missing in my life” certainly did not encourage me to continue. So, I closed everything and go home and forget about it. At least I thought. I didn’t sleep a wink that night. I kept thinking and rethinking that word and what I had read about it but without significant results. Is it possible that I can’t get out of this labyrinth? I’m very close to the solution, why give up right now?

The next day, early in the morning, as was my habit, as I returned from my run in the parks near my house, my eye caught my eye on a leaflet under a leaf. I picked it up; mentioned an African proverb which, more or less, went like this:

“The young man walks faster than the elderly, but the elderly knows the way.”

I had a stroke of genius, now I knew exactly what I had to do. With a hurried step I went back to the bar to ask for information about the “old man” who had spoken to me that day. Where could I have found him? While following the information they told me, I searched everywhere, but without success. Finally, some neighbors who knew him by sight, confirmed that he no longer lived there, that he had gone but did not know where. By now, I had lost all hope of finding him.

Unexpectedly, two weeks later and by pure coincidence, I saw him sitting on a bench in a park. I went over to ask if he remembered the conversation; he had made to me a few days earlier and if he knew how to give me some more details on that word that had so impressed me. After mumbling about a lot of things, rather confused I would say, as he was about to leave in a hurry, he told me that some time ago he too had read a sentence by Paulo Coelho that had particularly impressed him and that said: “When your legs are tired, walk with your heart. ”

Here is the ultimate turning point in my life, what I had been looking for years without succeeding. Now I know why I couldn’t find it, I was simply looking for it in the wrong place, when the answer had always been there: “inside my heart”. I just had to dig deeper inside myself and I would have found it. Just think, it was just a three-letter word, and yet, those three letters have radically changed my entire life path for good and forever.

I wish anyone could easily find that word inside their heart, without the difficulties I had to go through and just like drinking a cup of coffee.

That’s why I started writing books, to help you dig into your heart and find the answers you are looking for during a river of information.

I’m not a shrink or a communication genius or a super relationship expert, nor a coach even though I’ve done something like this in the past. But the experiences I gained, the communication consultancy I could manage for some multinationals and, above all, my inner research and the positive transformation of my life, have allowed me to hone many important skills such as dedication to the study of human problems and the identification of solutions.

The primary goal that I have posed to analyze the true values ​​of life based on the context or situations that must be faced, make a careful synthesis of them, transforming them into practical and useful topics.
