What secrets is he keeping from his wife?

The memories haunted her and she couldn’t find an escape, the bitterness grew until it ruled her life. She saw life differently than a normal person. When Natalia went clubbing and a guy approached her trying to be suave, she wondered is he a pimp? Is he a trick? Is he a cheater?

She was intent on every word; and started learning to live with the emptiness as she woke up alone… The betrayal in her blood family, the one in the game, she trusted no one. If you think about it, she became the same cheater and liar as the people she despised. She is no better than these men she had grown to hate.

As for everyone in the game, who developed relationships, they are probably still in the game, in jail, or dead. Sometimes, you wonder what happened to everyone, but then she crushed the curiosity and started thinking about the good things that are a part of my life. Natalia had no connection with anyone and would like to keep it that way. However, one thing is for certain, she does not look over her shoulder any longer, as she once used to.

It took years to overcome this wall of hate. Natalie has gone through many relationships with men and women, some she regretted and some she didn’t. Thanks to the help of her parents, and close friends, their unconditional love brought life back into her. The strength buried inside allowed Natalia to finally become the person she is proud of today: loving, compassionate, helpful, strong, and honest. She took the good traits from the game and brought them to the “straight life.” She learned from my past and left it behind. The change allowed her to reconcile the mistakes, bringing joy and laugher back in life.

Natalia’s message to you is, stay strong, be positive, and no matter how much you want to give up, don’t. You are stronger than you think. You are not a young naive girl anymore, but well-rounded and blessed. She felt you have a lot to offer and is proud to announce this chapter of her life is officially closed.

About Facing Fear

Facing Fear depicts the true story of Evelyn (Billie) Frechette, the beloved companion of John Dillinger. The unyielding violence that ravaged the Native American Race made survival extremely dangerous. As society fought to overcome the Great Depression, Evelyn tried to make ends meet by taking work wherever it presented itself. Many times, she performed with her sister in the Native American ceremonial dances on the reservation for production entertainment.

Evelyn, like many young Native Americans, was forcibly taken to an Indian Boarding School in South Dakota. She spent much of the next ten years learning Christianity. Western Culture believed it was necessary to civilize the Indians, thereby saving the man inside. In the 1930s poverty ran rampant among the population, especially the minorities. Evelyn’s only relative that did not live on the reservation at the time was her sister Anna, who lived in Chicago, Illinois. On the trip from South Dakota, traveling alone, hitchhiking when possible, she was brutally attacked and raped.

In the aftermath of the forcible violation, doctors informed Evelyn she was pregnant. At twenty-one, she gave birth to a baby boy who was severely handicapped because of a syphilis infection. The deformities left him impaired, forcing Evelyn to leave him in the care of the Brooks Baby Farm. Authorities (FBI) later suspected that Brooks let the poor babies die or even had them killed, and buried them in the dunes along Lake Michigan, near Beulah MI. One of the graves held the remains of Evelyn’s baby boy, hence the nickname Billie.

Evelyn, like many young women, sought to find love and start a family. In her travels, she met and married Welton Sparks. Blind to Welton’s escapades, their shot-gun wedding took place in the jail before they sentenced him to twenty-five years for mail fraud. After his admittance to Leavenworth, she began collecting endangered spouse payments to supplement her income. One evening while out with her girlfriends ‘cabereting,’ she met a man named Jack Harris.

An instant attraction blossomed. “I’ll never forget that. It happened the way things do in the movies. I was 25 years old, but I wasn’t any different from all the other girls that were my age. Nothing that had happened to me up to that time could amount to anything. However, that night everything changed. I started a new kind of life,” Billie said.

Evelyn quickly learned what it meant to be loved; her new companion instantly showered her with luxurious gifts. The young girl who fought to endure a failing economy discovered how the other side lived. However, the perks of their relationship came with a downside. The law-abiding lifestyle she lived would soon collide when her love affair with John Dillinger flourished.

John Dillinger known as Public Enemy #1 kept a low-profile dodging copper on the run, because of his extracurricular activities. As his bank robberies continued around the countryside, the FBI closed in when he traveled across state lines. On July 22, 1934, Hoover issued a shoot to kill order; closing in on his whereabouts, the sting took place in front of the Biograph Theater in Chicago. When gunfire erupted, Dillinger died because of his injuries a short time later.

The turn of events devastated Evelyn but she was serving time for harboring a criminal. After her release, she wrote a booklet about her experience. It sold for twenty-five cents. At the same time, she joined the show called ‘Crime Does Not Pay.’ Evelyn said she is a survivor and has a story to tell. Facing Fear reveals the hidden life of Evelyn Frechette, John Dillinger’s girlfriend. An incredible woman who faced the unthinkable.

My journey writing Facing Fear started in the mid-80s. During that time, my career took me on a daily drive from Wausau to Green Bay. The trip was like watching paint dry after a few months. I needed something to keep my mind occupied on the drive. So, one afternoon a short time later, I stopped at a local gas station for fuel and to stretch my legs. It happened to be on the Menominee Indian Reservation. While filling up the truck, some local kids ran up to me asking if I knew Evelyn Frechette. It seemed odd at the time, I had no idea who she was or why they would be asking. They proceeded to tell me she was John Dillinger’s girlfriend and was born on the reservation. Since I had lived in Wisconsin most of my life and spent time in that area of the county, the Dillinger name is fairly common. However, that was the extent of my knowledge. The interaction left me curious and I started researching this person born in the early 1900s. Needless to say, her story got my attention. This thirty-year research project has finally come to fruition. But before going any further, the story of naming the book outlining Evelyn’s story must be told first.
At night, I would go downstairs to the basement to work on my research. Our house was three stories with the basement half underground, in a remote location along the edge of the woods. Back then, we did not have computers so all my research was written in notebooks or on index cards. I had gone downstairs after dinner to write, while my wife went about her nightly routine. I was sitting at my desk and the only light on in the room was the small desk lamp. It was quiet and dark; I could see the faint house lights illuminating across the edge of the woods through the window above my desk. Shortly thereafter, I heard a voice echo 360 degrees around the room. At first, I thought it was my wife coming downstairs. But when I realized there were no footsteps, I leaped from my chair and scanned the room, when I heard it again. The voice was clear, a quiet but firm tone. It echoed, Facing Fear. In the few seconds I stood there, it repeated several more times.

The incident almost scared me to death. I took off across the dark room, nearly breaking my leg running upstairs. My wife heard me charging across the house as I entered the bedroom. She looked shocked to see me panting, as the sweat poured off my face. I have always been very active, an athlete. In my youth, I competed in cycling and speed skating. So, to see me out of breath was unusual. Once I started to relax and explained what happened, she did not seem surprised or even alarmed. She just simply said, “I guess Evelyn is trying to tell you something.”

The title was perfect; the occurrence connected me with her on a spiritual level, unlike anything I had ever experienced. So, in essence, Evelyn named her own book. As I have learned, she faced fear every day of her life. I am not sure why Evelyn sought me out to tell her story to the world, but I am honored to have been the one she chose.

Lucefer’s Dragon is my first novel. My writing explores the dark side of human nature and the human condition of being good vs. evil. In my book, I examine the question, “Why are we evil?”

As an Army veteran, devoted husband, and father of five, I have plenty of life experiences that I wish to share with the world. Although I mainly write fiction, my worlds and characters sprout from my numerous real-life experiences.

In my spare time, I enjoy backyard barbecues and bonfires with my wife, children, and two pups.

About Life Is Like a Fast Car

This book was inspired by a 3,900-mile trip taken with my Father in the spring of 2018. My father has always been “a car guy.” He bought his first one at fourteen, then proceeded to drive it following his parents as they returned home to Kansas after a decade in California where his parents had settled during the “Okie” Migration of the Great Depression. On the occasion of his 85th birthday, he told me he was going to buy himself a brand-new Ford Mustang GT. With the new car purchased, he began planning a trip back to his hometown in Kansas from Central California where he lived most of his adult life and had retired. We had a great time traveling “The Mother Road,” the term used for Route 66 by many of the Okie migrants of the 1930’s Dust Bowl era. We visited family, saw his old home outside of Neodesha, Kansas, stopped by Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “little house on the prairie” just a few miles from there, and enjoyed miles and miles of open road with the 460 horsepower in the Mustang GT. It was a wonderful trip.
