About Rosie’s Choice by Zara Silver

Rosie’s Choice’ deals with the lives of three women from different generations, over the period of a year. All three face particular issues relevant to their situation in life (old age, working mother and middle aged with independent children).
Winnie is an older lady whose husband has died recently and the book opens with her preparing to start a new life on her own. Natalie, her daughter, makes it obvious that she doesn’t want to spend time with her. When Winnie has an accident, Natalie is faced with the prospect of having to be more involved. Rosie a divorced mother, is trying to get back into employment and ends up working with Winnie as a care worker. As the story unfolds we learn more about the complex relationships within each character’s family. Will they be able to repair them in time or will it be too late?
The reader sees through the different voices of the women what it is to be them at that particular stage in their life. The readers will recognise a Winnie and/or Rosie and/or Natalie and will be able to identify to some degree personally with one of them. The characters struggle with various challenges that are pertinent to ‘womanhood’ and older people in today’s society.

Hello! ‘Rosie’s Choice is actually my second novel but I didn’t attempt to publish the first children’s book I wrote. Maybe I will go back and revisit it now that I know how to do it!

Rosie’s Choice came about after I gave up my job to focus on my eldest child and his transition to secondary school. We had been told that it was going to be very hard for him and it was! I knew that I couldn’t manage to hold down a job and be there for him as well as my other two children but I had an enormous urge to write. So I used that time off to write a book, something that I had always dreamed about doing. I had anticipated that it would not take very long but my goodness what a long and involved process writing a book is!

I think that it took me about 6 months but then I paid for some professional support to edit it and make it the best that I could. Being my first ‘proper’ book, I found that I had a lot to learn and the editing process took about 8 months. I tried to write every day even if that meant getting up at 5.30am. Writing in school holidays and weekends were a no no but I would describe my writing as feverish whenever I had a spare moment.

‘Rosie’s Choice’ ended up being semi autobiographical although I am not Rosie. I did draw upon my own frustrations and struggles to write about her and I’ve heard that this is common for a first book. I’ve always said that there would not be a next time because of the amount of time and energy it took to write it but lately I’ve been rethinking that. I did love the process and I’ve had a great idea which I think would resonate with a lot of people. I’m back working and setting up my own business but hey, lets see. From past experience, if you have the urge to write, it is very difficult not to.
