A Collection of Short Stories by Victoria Bowman

About A Collection of Short Stories by Victoria Bowman

Excerpt #1:
At first, it didn’t register what I was seeing. They showed this is a lot of movies anyway. This was perfectly normal.
Then it clicked. People are supposed to bleed not spark! I know my parents would take me to the doctor every month but I’d always be asleep for everything because I’d kick and scream if I wasn’t.
I grab my phone and dial Mom’s number. She answers on the third ring.
“Hey Betty! How’s being out on your own going? We miss you!” She chatters excitedly.
I take a deep breath, “It’s going okay. Mom, is Dad there? I need to speak to you both.”
“Yes! Oh we’re so excited to hear from you!”
I hear her yell for my dad to come see. Then a quick conversation before I am put on speaker.
“Hey Sugarplum!” Dad shouts. I can practically see his blue eyes dancing with excitement, the same way they would when his team won the game.
“Hey! So, um, I have some news. Uhhh… Bad news… I’m trying not to freak out.”
Silence.
“Hello?”
“Sorry honey! What’s wrong?” Mom answers.
I gulp. “I um… I cut my finger… off… And there’s not blood, or pain.”
More silence.
Excerpt #2
I stood before the queen, waiting for my sentence. No doubt, I’d be sentenced to death. Alice, queen of hearts, was ruthless.
“Aoife the enchantress” She spat, “You shall be banished from this land, never to return!”
A collective gasp danced in the air, even Edward, the king stared at his wife in shock. She always killed, never banished.
A crimson smile spread across my face, “As you wish, my lady.” I curtsied and allowed the guards to bound me in chains of silver.
They believed the silver would stop my magic, these poor tragic souls. I was more powerful than I let on, even if I was only ten.
The guards gently lifted me into the back of a wagon surrounded by silver bars. I lay my head on the hay and allow sleep to take over.

Some would call me a little naughty, but I see myself as a writer of spicy thoughts. Being a romance writer is something that I never imagined I would be doing. There is nothing more rewarding than to put your thoughts down in words and share them. I began writing seven years ago and have enjoyed every minute. When I first started writing, I wasn’t sure what I would write. It didn’t take me long to realize that romance would be my niche. I believe that every life deserves a little bit of romance; a little spice doesn’t hurt either. When I am not writing, I enjoy the company of good friends and relaxing with a delicious glass of red wine.

A Promise of Iron

About A Promise of Iron

A Promise of Iron, book one of the Echoes of Illyria saga:
Long ago, the Illyrian Empire fell and the world of men fell with it. The Illyrians are gone now. Nobody knows where. All they left behind are miles of dark roads and unanswered questions.
From the darkness the Cyllian Empire has emerged. It straddles the old thrones of men and brings a tenuous peace, filled with the unease of hate and the impatience of idle spears.
The Mere grow restless in their mountain homes. They strike at the lands of men with a boldness not seen since the days of Illyria.
The Ruk bear the scars of a long-lost war. Toiling under the heel of the Empire, they have little hope for a better life.
Born out of hatred, a young man seeks to bring it all down, stone by stone, brick by brick. He’s no hero. Heroes are fools and dead men. But he hears the words upon the wind. And he seeks a promise… A PROMISE OF IRON.

Series
Echoes of Illyria is an ongoing fantasy series. The epic saga blends elements of epic fantasy and adventure with a focus on realism, relatable characters, and true moral dilemmas. Set in a world where metal is incredibly rare, three friends battle the evils of empire while unraveling the secrets of a forgotten past…. And a hidden foe.

Characters
I tried to write believable characters. I want realism… accessibility… relatability. Once I established the backstory for each character, their mannerisms became a reflection of that story, of the world around them and their place in it.
Faerin— protagonist and main point of view as the story is written in the first person. His life has been one of suffering and hate. Born of two worlds, yet belonging in neither, he seeks to improve the worth of his salt…. by any means necessary.
Crylwin— rich, powerful, charming…. and a drunken playboy who grapples with the weight of familial responsibility. He is also Faerin’s best friend. Quick to laugh, quick to temper, he is impulsive and an absolute blast to write.
Lira— born into a life of privilege, one not equally shared with the lowly of the world. She seeks to use her wit, coin, and influence to tip the scales. Defiant, radiant, commanding; she is the moral heartstring of the story.

Author Bio:
Brandon was born and raised near Sacramento, CA. By near, he means somewhere in that general vicinity as he moved around a lot as a kid. His parents were pretty good people, each doing their best to teach the values of hard work and responsibility. Most of his early years were spent goofing around, reading fantasy books, and playing D&D games on PC. Brandon was not what any teacher would consider a great student. He was intelligent, sure, but equally opinionated, lazy, and a world-class know it all. He would also do anything for a laugh (sorry, Frau Wilson). Needless to say, he graduated high school by the skin of his teeth, adhering to the philosophy of, "If you set your sights at mediocrity, you will never be disappointed."

Thankfully we all grow up.

He got married, had a kid, went to college, applied himself, worked hard, and found that responsibility suits him quite nicely. He also wrote a book… and considering he is not classically trained in writing, or particularly well versed in literature— It's pretty okay… maybe even better than okay.
He continues to write and hopes that one day he can write enough books so that he can go back to goofing around, reading fantasy books, and playing D&D games on PC.

The Girl from Cairo: A Memoir By Peggy Hinaekian

About The Girl from Cairo: A Memoir By Peggy Hinaekian

“For many of us in the disconnected 21st century, it is time to speak about our heritage.”

In this fascinating and unique memoir, it creates a whole world bridging memory and narrative. It has a sense of longevity, not so much in the number of years, but with the depth and range of felt experiences.

The writer is an artist who brings to the page an astute eye for the meaning of belonging and identity as she shifts between her many selves. There’s a real sense of looking at people in the Middle Eastern world through the lens of her mixed ethnicity-Egyptian, British, Armenian. The sense of tension with her characters, particularly her roguish, bon-vivant father, who gambled away the family fortune, and her strong-willed, fashionable but secretive mother ever vigilant about neighbors gossiping as they lived in gentile poverty.

Nevertheless, she maintained a sense of normalcy while railing in her “headstrong” daughter. “The memoir finds humor in dark places like a childhood spent in trauma, cowering from overhead bombing raids during WWII, telling how entire families were able to find the resilience to survive constant danger.

Following WWII, Peggy’s fascination with American GIs stationed in Cairo sets her off on a life path. When the Suez Canal political upheaval after “Black Saturday” happens, it catapults her to leave Egypt. “The author’s coming of age story is composed of her education in a Catholic Girls’ School, her sexual awakening, her first love, and her childhood daydreams of becoming a film star or a fashion designer that sets her on a journey through several countries: Canada, Switzerland and the U.S.A.

The narrative plays on the reader’s question of ‘what’s next?’ as the writer weaves her family story with compassion, finding inspiration in the ‘showing’ of ordinary people living their lives against an exotic and, often, foreign backdrop.

“Frances Roberts Reilly–poet, playwright, and memoirist”.

Author Bio:
Astrid V.J. is an award-winning South African author, social anthropologist and transformational life coach. She currently resides in Sweden with her husband and two children. In early childhood, she showed an interest in reading and languages–interests which her family encouraged. Astrid started writing her first novel aged 12 and now writes high fantasy, exploring her passion for cultures and languages. When she isn’t writing, Astrid likes to read, take walks in nature, play silly games with her children, do embroidery, and play music.

Astrid writes transformation fiction: incorporating transformation principles in novels, rather than writing another self-help book. She is interested in minority group questions, considerations on social standards of beauty and the negative consequences these have, and would like to make the fantasy genre accessible to people of non-white, non-Christian backgrounds. Astrid feels the fantasy genre has become too restrictive with limited representations of race, ethnicity and culture. She seeks to explore other paths on this writing journey, incorporating her background in anthropology and psychology to create engaging experiences, which also provide food for thought on the diverse topics she finds most important. These include: racism, minority rights, cultural diversity, culture change, intolerance, humanity’s environmental impact, the human capacity for transformation and success in the face of adversity, and much more.

Book Zero by Peter Bach

About Book Zero by Peter Bach

To advance society, it takes a body count. Have you noticed? Because the gods and elite establishment want their future. It is only human to crush the competition and kill for a better tomorrow, or is it?
Balance Kenkovan, thought so as he skated through life on the GI bill in 2300 AD, in a cyber-controlled world which solves problems — no attention to the flotsam and jetsam of deadly technologies needed. His ideas applied to bio-science by another student begets a nanorobot swarm.
Life on earth faces obliteration. Yet, the world solves the crisis. The military kills the leaks, and recruits Balance as a world government Shadow Chaser. As promised, our brighter tomorrow still comes. Yet for Balance, under the establishment’s pressured control, he gets forged into the defender of government wrongs.
Chasing shadows, he climbs the elite ladder, while those genuinely in power topple society in a war amongst themselves. Most Humans don’t make it. Evil picks up where civilization drops it. And the world becomes a garden of dim, brutal Humanity. Dragons, wizards, and many mutant creatures now set Humanity’s future.
Salvation rests in two genuine powers remaining to help or hinder Humanity, the controlling homicidal female, Isis, and Osiris, the male who forgot he was a god. Balance survives despite his sister-wife’s intentions. Living, but not entirely understanding what he can do or which side he is on- the Humans, or the Anunnaki gods.

I attended Downers Grove South High School, Ohio State, Northern Illinois University, UCLA. I’ve taken the MCAT but never went to become a doctor; the Tech industry wanted to pay me more, and sooner. I failed in that choice. I’m 60 now, and I’m going to write- a good choice, an enhanced journey. And with work, I might be allowed to offer more meaningful contributions, than I have done so far to humanity.

I have an Author site at www.booksofef.com. For the last four years, I’ve done public readings of some of the chapters in the novels. These are fun. I get to do voices. It’s best when the voices come out of my head.

Thanks for being awesome and supporting the authors.
