I’m not the typical author, in that becoming one was a complete accident.
(Really!)

I read like I breathe, whatever genre is in my Kindle is good with me! As a child with little access to new reading material I had the most eclectic beginners library, made from thirty-third-hand books, school throwaways, and the blessed book tokens of birthdays and Christmases.

As a teen with my own library card, well…the universe becomes your oyster, right?
I went wherever the author took me. To Mordor, and then to the farthest reaches of space and time. I solved mysteries with Enid Blyton’s children, explored Verne’s hidden worlds. I lived life through a horse’s eyes, sailed the seas in search of the white whale, fell in love with a sultan’s wife as she wove tales into the dawn to save her life.

I could go on. Nothing is as rich as the imagination of others.

After a lifetime of avoiding reality by hiding in whatever text I could find, I was given a Kindle as a gift. I read around a bit, then stumbled across Michael Anderle’s Kurtherian Gambit series.

Nobody who picks up the first book in that series does so knowing how much it will impact them. I found not only the singular best story I’ve ever read, but the beginning of a life changing journey that led me to a whole community, and so many people I can’t imagine living without.

Now it’s my turn to craft the narrative, something I take SO seriously. Not just as an author, but as a reader. It is my greatest wish that YOU as readers enjoy my stories as much as I enjoy putting them together, and that over the coming years my author page grows into a place where anyone can find an escape from reality.

This book, ‘Foundations of subtraction’, presents a peerless 300-page ‘story’ of discovering the most varied arithmetical operation. However, it must be read after duly investing time and attention in the addition and multiplication books.
Here are a couple of excerpts from the book:
Lesson: Knowing how to learn subtraction
School math curricula place teaching of subtraction just after the teaching of addition. It follows the belief that subtraction is the opposite of addition. While it is true that there are ‘opposite’ features between addition and subtraction (we discussed them in an earlier Learning Outcome), the two can only be learnt in quite different ways. For example, subtraction is varied and far more nuanced. There are significant dissimilarities between addition and subtraction beyond what may be classified as ‘opposites.’
Subtraction may not be the second arithmetical operation to be taught. The skills and support required for teaching and learning subtraction are significantly different. A majority of teachers also lack the nuanced understanding needed to teach subtraction.
Lesson: Preparing children to learn subtraction
Subtraction is intuitive and just about as natural as addition. However, addition is fairly simple to observe and state (for example, things being added are all in distinct quantities).
Subtraction is identified in more varied situations. It is more nuanced and needs better comprehension of situations to be identified and mathematically expressed as subtraction. As already mentioned, there is more planning and preparation needed to teach and learn subtraction. It may be the most complex of the four operations, as far as visualization is concerned.
It would be easier for children to connect with the varied situations which are mathematically expressed as subtraction if the following aspects are taken care of in the teaching of subtraction:
First, appreciating the limitations of counting when it comes to subtraction.
In situations involving addition, counting is always a simple direct alternative – counting is tiring, time-consuming, etc. but counting is still an option as a real alternative to situations involving addition to know the sum of given quantities/numbers.
It is hard for children to realise that counting and subtraction have a more complex relationship than the relationship between addition and counting. It is not possible to get the difference in quantities by counting the quantities. For example, we cannot distinguish the number of books in two stacks of books by counting the books in both the stacks! We will have to use subtraction in such situations.
Second, physical segregation of quantities in subtraction situations is unlike how it is in addition:
A. The quantities in subtraction situations may or may not be segregated to start with. For example, if there are 12 crayons and you take 3 out of it to colour, the 3 crayons taken away are not distinct (they are part of the 12 crayons). In addition, the quantities to be added, the addends, are all distinctively identifiable, well segregated. If we add 3 chairs and 4 chairs, the 3 chairs and the 4 chairs are always distinctly visible.
This shift from the certain need for segregation of quantities to be added to accepting unsegregated quantities in subtraction is quite a new learning experience.
B. Unlike addition, subtraction makes two quantities out of one – the initial quantity is split into two – what is taken away and what is left. In addition, two quantities become one, the sum.
Interestingly, all these above are not valid for all subtraction situations.
The book is a must read for everyone. Math needs a rebooting for us all, and this is one such book.

It is part of the larger, revolutionary ‘mathematics as a language’ series. It is also path breaking for another reason – it is what we call ‘family edition’ of curricular math books – books meant for parents, for home.
A book on multiplication following addition is in itself a significant shift from the conventional and popular order of studying subtraction after being introduced to addition. Subtraction is the most complex of the four operations – needs more logical and linguistic maturity to appreciate and understand.
On the other hand, multiplication has a unique distinction among the four operations – it is the first, and the simplest derived mathematical operation. Thus, the significance of learning and mastering multiplication is far greater. It leads to quicker maturity of mathematical thinking and introduces the idea of relationship among operations.
The book offers unique insights into the nature of multipliers, multiplicands, and products (and factors too). In turn, the organic connection between math, multiplication and everyday living and work is very evident and hardwired in the brain.

Every sentence of the book leads to another on the back of logic and reasoning. The book may be the most contextual text on logical development.

“It may just be added that multiplication in school math is introduced and reduced to a version of a nameless method, to find the product of two given numerals. As a result, ‘3 x 4’ and ‘3 x 2 x 2’, for instance, are exactly the same expressions, ‘equal to 12’. Not only is this meaning of the two expressions, being reduced to just 12, is highly myopic, it robs us of the diverse meanings and applications of multiplication.
To cite another example, the profound significance of a four-numbered multiplication expression, such as ‘1 x 2 x 3 x 4’, isn’t even obliquely referred to in school math books; not to talk of the incongruity of the expressions ‘1 x 2 x 3 x 4’ and ‘4 x 3 x 2 x 1’, and the need to defend the same.”
Another revolutionary feature of the foundation series books is that there is no math-textbook-like exercise. The book is so rooted in real-world situations and events that each family can create hundreds of their own exercises (and need not look for correct answers). Parents don’t need any written exercise – our daily life and work is full of math situations and solutions.

Indeed, the only feasible and fail-safe way to enable parents to ensure quality education of their children is to empower every parent in their children’s math education. ‘Mathematics as a language’ is just that math, no parents will be left behind!
Fortunately, there is more to it – math education (in schools) will not transform unless parents make a more critical contribution and play the primary role. Schools have a secondary role in rewriting math education just as they have a secondary role in ensuring high literary competence in the language of academics, and competitive levels in art, music, theatre, sports, etc.

For example, school mathematics assertively teaches ‘7 + 3 = 10’, but in scientific and everyday living ‘7 + 3 = 10’ is a low-chance truth! It is true only in ‘unreal’ mathematics!
Yes, mathematics is easy, in fact easier than learning languages! Mathematics has just 10 digits (≡ 26 alphabets of English) and just a few tens of basic arithmetic rules (≡ grammar rules of English). In mathematics there are no pronunciation issues, no ‘regional’/local variations, and no difference between ‘spoken and written’ numerals (the words of math).
To be true, it’s the easiest domain of knowledge to master!
Expectedly, if we can only ensure introduction and interaction with math in its true nature, it will be sparse to be struggling in math, to be fearful of math.
This math textbook marks an epochal change in the nature and thus, the meaning of math in our lives; most befitting the role math is playing in the age of ever-growing artificial intelligence.

The books have ‘nothing to teach.’ The content is the navigational guide to support children with contexts, resources, experiences, conversations, and goals to ‘make sense of things.’ It nurtures observation, an extension of knowledge, application/generalisation, estimation, and joy of collaborative/social learning.
Four other books of the series on the ‘Foundations of Arithmetical operations’ – ‘Foundations of addition,’ ‘Foundations of multiplication,’ ‘Foundations of subtraction,’ and ‘Foundations of division’ are already published. They demystify the operations and lay the foundations for ‘love with math, and unparallel insights into the new economy/society.’
Children around the Kindergarten years have to follow these six books in the series. No distinction is possible and meaningful in the series to be relevant to the different KG years – I and II, as in the formal education system.
Math education in the pre-primary years may be the poorest in the formal education of math. For eg., the numbers are introduced too early, and math is not rooted in everyday things, situations, and conversations.
In these years, parent-led education works magic, and the books have dramatically simplified the demands on parents.
Parent-led education (within or without schools) will also achieve much greater outcomes and a developmental pathway unique for the children and the family.

Mathematics must be taught and introduced as another language, much like the languages well known to children at their age in Kindergarten – mother tongue, a second language for children in some countries, art/music/dance/play.
Indeed, music/sound is every child’s first language (music is pleasant/melodic sound, and children react to such sounds). Play/gestures/facial expressions are the second ones. Drawing is the third. And dance is the fourth.
Our Kindergarten mathematics heavily draws on other languages. There is little difference in math and other languages in KG – math is drawn from everyday living; there is no abstraction.

• Craft
• Conversations
