The Chinese didn’t need to import anything, as their industry was developed enough to supply the whole country with what it needed. Britain had to come up with something the Chinese needed, and in desperation, the decision was made for Britain to sell opium.

When diplomatic efforts to introduce opium to the Chinese market failed, the British Parliament approved an alternative: war. There were two wars, one from 1839 to 1842 and another from 1856 to 1860. They are collectively known as the Opium Wars. The British, who were joined by the French and supported by the Americans and Russians, clashed with Imperial China, which was ruled by the Qing dynasty. These conflicts are largely forgotten in the Western world, perhaps out of a sense of collective shame. But in China, the Opium Wars are still symbols of national humiliation at the hands of the Western powers.

About In Hiding

Lou Craig is the oasis in his life. It was disheartening to him that all he brought into hers was worry and fear. While he attempted to assuage her fears, he could not ward off the emotion from Lou. Lou and her son Joey are his families, plain and simple. Wayne wonders if the time had come for him to step up.

No escape –
Kate Ramey rests undisturbed in an unlikely place, or so she believed. In the quiet, she becomes lost in her vivid recollections of her fears and disastrous decisions. The dreams lead to too much reminiscing, and Kate realizes that she can run from Wayne Anthony. She cannot escape her demons or her role in the Ramey Jewelry Store robbery and murder.
Only miles away, Wayne had a chance meeting with the local police, Officer Greg Keith; he hoped he had cast the net wider within the town. However, as they parted ways, he wondered if Office Keith was too sympathetic to Ramey’s story. Secretly he hopes the fatherly man does not cross her path.
Later, he finds a local diner and sits surrounded by dishes filled with home cooking. His immediate needs met; he relaxes and connects mentally with his skip. Suddenly it comes to him; for the first time, the vision is clear. The bounty hunter finally knows where Kate Ramey is hiding. Now that he has this key, Wayne Anthony is eager to bring this case to an end.

Out from hiding –
Alone and away from the people he loves, Wayne cannot escape the reality of how he lives his life. Deep in the night, he thinks back to a chance meeting with Nora Steeves, with the Major Crimes Unit. She had tried to recruit him, but being set in his ways, he brushed the offer off. Wayne considers how a change such as this would impact his life; he could have a real relationship with Lou. This change would also mean being a full-time role model and Dad to Joey. He wrestles with the latter; his decision would have a great impact on the young boy.
Meanwhile, Kate Ramey has run into a detour that has derailed her attempt to avoid recapture. Orange signs direct her to untitled roads, which all look alike. She winds her way through the maze until she finally sees a major state road. To her anguish, she sees that all she has accomplished was riding in circles! In a rush, the situation spirals her out of control mentally. She associates the dead-end to other decisions she has made in the past. The weight of her past actions come crashing down on her. She has lost the will to fight and pilots her cycle back to her earlier hiding place, the abandoned cemetery on top of the knoll.

Descent into hell –
Kate pushes her cycle to the back of the cemetery; after cresting the hill, the slick slope hurls her and the bike downward. After crashing against a sapling, Kate attempts to rise only to discover she is critically injured. The circumstances bore down on the young woman, and she surrenders to her fear. Throwing her arm over her face, Kate loses control, crying like a child. The tears are triggered by more than the physical pain; it realizes that she will be immobile and prey to Wayne Anthony. Limping forward, she realizes the only option is to hide in the utility shed. Alone and in pain, she suffers the onslaught of guilt and anger. Her thoughts bring her back to a similar moment when her decision cost her everything. Then too, she had ignored the warning signs; in the end, it proved to be a fatal mistake.
Across from the cemetery, Wayne catches Kate’s ascent from the back of the property. Even from a distance, he can tell the young woman is injured. Now that she can’t run, all he has to do is wait until she can no longer fight. He spends the time sorting out the emotions he feels from Kate Ramey. He expects the waves of anger and frustration. What puzzles him is her remorse over the Ramey Store robbery. He struggles to understand why she felt that too had been her fault.
Just as Wayne has settled himself down to wait out his skip, he sees a headlights approach. He becomes alarmed as he watches the local police slowly pull into the cemetery drive. Hitting the ignition, he realizes he has to get to the other side of the highway; before Officer Keith comes face to face with Kate Ramey.

No options –
Alone in the shed, Kate Ramey is plagued by guilt laced nightmares. She wakes from a dream where she relived, killing John Michael Grand. She still hears the echo of her gun drying firing as she pointed it at the biker. Suddenly she realizes what she hears is not the ghosts from her dream, but footsteps.
Officer Gregory Keith leaves the cruiser’s comfort to investigate a report of a disturbance in the town’s oldest cemetery. He is convinced it was only kids messing around until he heard what he believed was a gasp. Concerned that this could be someone needing assistance, he investigates. Off in the distance, he hears the roar of a truck motor. He is unaware that he is about to be joined by the bounty hunter Wayne Anthony.
Wayne enters the graveyard just as Keith disappears into the shed. He feels the terror coming from Kate. She is trapped, which means she is more dangerous than ever. The man dons his Kevlar vest while jumping from his vehicle, intent of protecting the town’s officer. Once inside, he sees the situation is dire. Keith has her highlighted in the beam of his flashlight; Kate appears to be armed.
Officer Keith feels that his fatherly demeanor can convince the girl to surrender. He soon sees she has deteriorated mentally to the point of being dangerous. When Wayne Anthony breaches the shed doorway, he realizes that Kate is prepared to fight.
The trio finds themselves in the small caretakers shed in a dangerous standoff. The sound of gunfire rings in the early dawn.

Out of hiding –
Wayne and Kate both fight for their lives as Keith calls for assistance.
Kate’s will to live is gone; she wants nothing more than to surrender. In a dream-like state, she connects with her deceased parents. Sadly even their love is not enough to change her will. Oddly, it is her pursuer that has a stronger impact on her. In their subconscious state, their connection remains as strong. Wayne Anthony sees Kate surrendering, giving up after all she has survived. He goads her, taunting her to continue fighting, although he is not sure she has the fire left in her. I am retired from Hospital work after 27 years. My husband and I traveled around the USA in our RV and loved it. I started writing my first Novel about 20 years ago but life, work, children and breast Cancer got in the way. After official retirement and my health settling down, I finished the book. The book has played over and over in my head like a movie begging to be written. In 1997 my mother and I traveled to Ireland for the first time. We had done extensive ancestor research and hoped to find our connection in Ireland. We discovered an old cottage belonging to ancestors and upon entering the cottage I could feel their story.This is the basis for the book.
