About The Summoner and the Dark

On an island cursed with constant darkness, a young boy, Emmet, is held captive in the attic of a gambling den, at the mercy of a cruel innkeeper and kept alive only for his inexplicable luck at cards and dice. A mysterious stranger by the name of Bhaskar En-Shemesh, arrives at the inn and wins Emmet his freedom. Emmet is then spared an attempt on his life by the quick thinking of his best friend, Jack. Bhaskar learns from Emmet and Jack of an agate stone used to control and torture animals. They are confronted by the innkeeper and some local thugs, out for revenge. A fight ensues, with Bhaskar defeating the local goons and escaping the village with the boys.

They travel on through a forest, on their way to Bhaskar’s homeland, Cascasquia. They take shelter in tree dens and meet animals that are revealed to have a special relationship with Cascasquians. They are attacked by a group of hags who are looking for the agate. The hags are defeated but Jack is cursed, and they are then ambushed by vile creatures of darkness called nocturnes. Bhaskar defeats the nocturnes, and Jack is saved, but it is revealed that Bhaskar has been mortally wounded. Bhaskar tells Jack he believes Emmet is a summoner, a person who can manipulate and draw strength from his surroundings. Bhaskar then dies with both boys by his side.

The boys carry on alone and are separated when the ground beneath them collapses, with Jack clinging to the canyon rocks and Emmet plunging down below.
Jack finds a bat, Eyam, and is surprised to realise he can talk to him. Jack journeys into a series of caves to find Emmet with Eyam acting as a guide.

Emmet is rescued by a Queen living with her people in the caves below the ice. The Queen presents Emmet with a box containing the agate stone, which she says appeared with her for safe keeping.

Jack and Eyam stumble upon a cave of nocturnes, and hear them plan an attack on Cascasquia. One nocturne later attacks Jack and Eyam, but they manage to escape. Jack decides to travel to Cascasquia to warn them of the impending attack, and hopes to find Emmet here waiting for him.

Emmet finally comes to realise the power within him, but is frightened by it. There is an attack and the agate is stolen by more hags. The Queen delivers Emmet to Cascasquain warriors who take him to the temple which houses and protects the shanira, custodians of light that maintain life on the island in place of the sun.

Jack reaches Cascasquia and is shocked to meet the son of Bhaskar, Ciro En-Shemesh. They arrive at the temple but are denied entry. With the help of Eyam and two townsfolk, they scale the temple wall and warn the warriors. Emmet and Jack are reunited.
The town is evacuated just in time, and as the villagers gather within the temple walls, the nocturnes attack and burn the village, and they are joined by the hags.

A great battle ensues, with the warriors and townsfolk fighting the nocturnes and hags. Jack comes face to face with the nocturne leader and defeats him with Bhaskar’s sword, while Emmet fights the hags and destroys the agate.

My name is Brendan, I’m a 36-year-old man living with my husband, Michael, in the UK. For the past few years, aside from my job as a sales manager in a theatre in Liverpool, I’ve been working on my first novel. I had a rather casual approach to reading as a young child, though I didn’t dislike the books we were given to read in school and mustered enough enthusiasm to borrow (and thoroughly enjoy) the collection of Roald Dahl books in the school library of my own accord.

I must admit it was in the world of cinema in which I truly became enthralled in the world of storytelling. When I was four years old my Grandad bought me a VHS copy of the live action Masters of the Universe film. Even now I find it hard to describe the impact of what some might call a crass cash in of a popular toy line had on me at such an early age. Good and evil, darkness and light, self-belief and self-doubt, the classic tropes of adventure were all there, in a colourful narrative that both dazzled and terrified me, all at the same time, with heroes to cheer and villains to love to hate.

I then began to seek out heroes and villains wherever I could find them, loosing myself in bank holiday screenings of ET, Jaws, The Goonies, Batman, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and James Bond films (the more epic/silly instalments of the franchise).

At around 11, I borrowed a Point Horror book from a friend’s sister and that introduction saw me jump head first in to that world of fast paced, succinct teen terror with wondrous baiting cliff-hangers at the end of each chapter, for the most part the horror living in the violence that could have been rather than what actually takes place. The wonder of reading really reached out for me at that age, when I was quickly understanding that there were parts of me that the world I lived in perhaps didn’t want to see, and in dire need of another world to escape to.

From then on, for me, books have been a doorway to another world, that I can carry around, and jump into as and when I wish or need to. I can’t make the change to kindle, there’s something about the soul of a book. On my shelf at home are the works of Ian Fleming, JK Rowling, Philip Pullman, Stieg Larson, Mitch Ablom, C.S Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert Bloch, Charles Dickens, John Steinbeck, Toni Morrison, Markus Zuzack, Ken Follet, Emily Bronte, Jane Austin, R.L Stine, Richie Tankersley Cusick, Stephanie Meyer, along with many superhero graphic novels and a few travel books for good measure.

Stuart Rudge was born and raised in Middlesbrough, where he still lives. His love of history came from his father and uncle, both avid readers of history, and his love of table top war gaming and strategy video games. He studied Ancient History and Archaeology at Newcastle University, and has spent his fair share of time in muddy trenches, digging up treasure at Bamburgh Castle.

Dillon Davidson and Avri Lawrence met in school in Jackson, Wyoming when they were in high school. Avri is the new kid in town and quilt-ridden; her parents perished in a house fire at her childhood homestead in Montana while she spent the night at a friend’s house. She’s sent to live with her eclectic aunt with questionable morals in Saddle Creek, WY. She and Dillon, along with his friends hit it off instantly and she becomes the ‘new guy’ in the now five-man buddy group.

Loyal to each other, Dillon’s friend Chase, takes Dillon into his home the night they graduate from high school when Dillon’s father, while on another drinking binge, beats him almost to death and throws him out. Afterward, Dillon can’t keep a job; he’s had many. So when Avri graduates from college and gets accepted into law school Dillon feels compelled to better himself. She spends her days in law school and her nights with him in the studio apartment above Rosie’s Diner, a small mom & pop kind of diner with red and aluminum booths and bar stools, and black and white tile flooring in Saddle Creek where they’ve always hung out together. Dillon decides once and for all to do something with his life and joins the military; he has a six-month deferral. His friends and especially Avri are shocked at first but support his decision. Much planning and apprehension goes into preparing for him to leave.

Dillon and Avri spend their last night together making passionate love and afterward Avri declares ‘to love him forever’ and asks him to promise to come back; she’ll wait for him. He says nothing. Dillon creeps away early in the morning while an exhausted Avri sleeps; but not before leaving a note for Avri declaring his love and making the promise to love her forever along with his new mailing address. When Avri wakes to a cold and lonely bed she can’t believe he really did it. How could he leave her? She pounds the bed with her fists and something flutters to the floor but she doesn’t take the time to investigate. She doesn’t hear from Dillon for almost four years.

Not a college grad or even a good-grade kid in high school, Dillon, to his surprise passes his test of a lifetime and is accepted into Special Forces. Since he hasn’t heard from Avri or any of his friends he takes on missions with risks and is captured in South America and held for almost eighteen months. As it turns out, Chase eagerly picks him up at the airport and welcomes him back to his old room and his red motorcycle covered with a tarp in the barn.

Once settled in working with the horses, and with Chase’s encouragement, Dillon takes a ride into town to see Avri. When he first sees her he can’t find the words to say and roars off on his motorcycle.

Avri has her own law firm in Jackson, Wyoming and is startled by the sound of every motorcycle on the street. She recognizes Dillon even though his helmet disguises face she knows he’s back. She’s been seeing a new man in town, Josh Hawkins, and is meeting him for dinner later. Avri virtually knows nothing about Josh and is not really interested in knowing him but he’s good company. She originally thought he was interesting but now he continually questions her, especially about where she lives, her family, etc. She’s uncomfortable sharing her personal information; she’s always been protective of her home life; her happy place.

Dillon, Chase and Elliot meet for dinner at Rosie’s the same night Avri is there with Josh. Avri hears their raucous laughter from the other side of the restaurant. While standing in line at the register to pay, Chase and Elliot come forward and stand in line behind her. They introduce themselves to Josh surprised they haven’t met before in such a small town. Then Chase and Elliot sidestep and Dillon stands before her. Handsome as ever, their eyes meet and Avri’s mesmerized; she can’t move. Avri sees fury on Dillon’s face when his eyes are diverted to Josh. If looks could kill, Josh would drop dead on the spot.

Late at night, Dillon can’t get Avri out of his mind; her memory sustained him through horrible times when he thought his life was coming to an end. He rides his motorcycle over the winding mountain roads and ends up at her house. She’d obviously worked hard and saved enough money to buy and renovate the large house. He hesitates numerous times; pausing on his way to the front porch and up the stairs but finally rings the doorbell. When she opens the door her fresh scent and perky nipples indicate she’s fresh from a bath and wears nothing under her light robe.

Dillon steps forward and Avri steps back. He steps forward again and she steps back again. An invitation for him to enter? He enters and kicks the door shut with his foot. With one stride forward he has her in his arms, kissing her, tasting her, smelling her, touching her and her robe tumbles to the floor. Dillon carries her off to the master bedroom downstairs and they make love like never before.

Avri feigns sleep while she listens to Dillon get dressed and then heads to the door leaving her alone. On the way to the front door he eyes a little red metal car on one of the steps leading to the second story. He pauses and ponders what this could mean, then continues to the front door. So caught up in their emotions and love for each other there are no words shared between them, both are still unsure where their relationship stands or if they even have a relationship.

Dillon’s nightmares, really night horrors, disturb Chase and his wife Lauren. Dillon finds a house on a non-working farm to sit for the winter. He gets a job as a deputy at the sheriff’s office, which enables him to search databases for info about Josh Hawkins. Since he can’t find out anything about Josh, Dillon visits Avri again and after sex, he warns her of Josh possibly being a danger to her. He tells her to stay away from Josh; she thinks he’s jealous and he leaves on bad terms after sparring with Avri because he can’t answer all her questions. He tells her ‘they’re done then.’

The next day, Avri calls Dillon and they meet for lunch to discuss the confusion about where he’s been all these years. He reveals enough to satisfy her but can’t tell her much because of security classification. He starts following Josh and finds out where he lives. He feels he must protect Avri from Josh and starts following her 24/7 as well.

Avri starts thinking about what she really knows about Josh and realizes it’s not much. She wonders what she ever saw in him from the beginning. Was she that lonely? She’s curious why he always wants to know about her house, and his intent to get into her bed. After comparing Dillon and Josh, Josh is a ‘pip-squeak’ and she decides to break it off with him.

While Avri meets with Josh at Rosie’s in an attempt to break it off with him, Josh gets rough and threatens her. Dillon’s watching outside and comes to her rescue, knocking Josh unconscious and tossing him outside the front door onto the loose gravel.

A night or two later, Dillon sits across the street behind some tall trees watching Avri’s house and catches Josh using keys (he had made) to get into her house. He knocks Josh out after throwing him off the porch and threatens him. Avri hears the racket and comes out with her handgun letting them both know she can protect herself and what belongs to her.

A couple days later, Avri arrives at work in the morning to find the back door open and the entire office vandalized. Sheriff, good friend Mitch, tells her someone was very thorough and appeared to be searching for something in particular; the point of entry being the back door and with a key. No signs of force. He asks her if she has any enemies. Of course, she has in her line of work sent many a criminal to prison and wasn’t aware of any releases. She immediately thinks of Josh. Mitch makes notes and leaves. When the day is done and Avri is ready to go home, she finds a flat tire on her car. She calls Road Service and after changing her tire informs her it looks like it had been purposely slashed. Once again she calls Mitch who makes a report and asks that the tire be examined. He also wants Avri to follow him to her house so he can look around first.

Mitch, the Sheriff, finds her house ransacked as well, the entry, not by force but with a key. A cryptic message left on her bedroom wall simply saying ‘You’ll pay for this.’ She updates Mitch on the night Dillon caught Josh trying to enter her house with his own key and she points the finger at Josh. Dillon arrives shortly after their conversation to comfort Avri. Then Deputy Dillon heads over to Josh’s known residence to hold him until the sheriff arrives since now Josh is the prime suspect in the vandalism.

Dillon finds Josh’s house seemingly deserted but with furniture moved helter-skelter, indicating a struggle. He recognizes the scent of death and the metallic odor of blood. He walks down the short hall to the bedroom and finds Josh in a prone position, tied to the corners of the bed; his intestines spread over the blood dripping bed. He eyes a wooden carved handled knife that looks familiar to him and picks it up with a piece of sheet. He studies the weapon and heads outside to see clearer in the light but runs into Deputy Adam at the bedroom doorway.

Deputy Adam sees Dillon holding the murder weapon and arrests him as the prime suspect in Josh’s murder. Avri checks into a hotel based on the advice from the sheriff who later calls her and informs her of Dillon’s arrest. She plans his release but is questioning the possibility that he could really have done this horrendous deed. After all, how does she know how Dillon was affected by actions while held captive?

When she tells Dillon they found his fingerprints on the murder weapon, Dillon blames everything on Josh; he realizes that it was his knife to begin with and Josh must have stolen it when Dillon found his backdoor open a day or so ago and then couldn’t find the knife. He’s looked everywhere, especially in the drawer where it should have been, along with his missing dog tags.

Avri can’t believe Dillon is blaming it all on Josh, who can no longer defend himself and thinks he’s just jealous. But when they find Josh’s fingerprints on the knife as well and Dillon’s dog tags in Josh’s pants pocket, Avri begins to believe him. Dillon is released into her custody; the judge and Avri, not knowing Dillon was definitely a flight risk with his passport, money and escape route predetermined; something that came natural to him now.

After searching Josh’s house they find his real name is Howard Hawkins and has known mob connections with Dante Ramirez, among others.

Dillon moves in with Avri but without a computer cannot research Howard Hawkins. Avri can, however, and pulls up pictures of Howard but they look nothing like the Josh she knew.

She receives a frightening call she can’t share with Dillon, only with the sheriff. They rush into town to the Sheriff’s office, who after a few phone calls, tells Avri and Dillon he’ll ‘take care of it.’ They go home but stay by the phone.

Hours later Avri receives another call demanding she come alone, no cops, and bring the sealed statement from Dennis Yeager when he squealed on Ramirez in court. “When I get the paper you get your boy back.” She needs to meet him at the cemetery at midnight.

Dillon is astonished to learn Avri has a son but is more than willing to help her get him back. She agrees to do what Ramirez says and argues with Dillon about going alone. He insists on going with her; she balks and then he makes a compromise: he’ll stay hidden the entire time and only reveal himself if she needs help.

She drives to the cemetery with Dillon hiding in the backseat. A black limo arrives and she is blinded by headlights but squints as she watches a big man, obviously one of Ramirez’ henchmen, get out and head toward her looking for the paper. When she doesn’t see her son she almost loses control until Dillon tells her, from the backseat, what to do. She steps out of the car and shows the paper but won’t let him have it until she sees her son is safe. Then, from out of nowhere, Dillon flies through the air and knocks the big guy to the ground and pushes a gun up under his chin.

She hears the click of the safety being pushed off and then sees the bully’s lips moving but can’t hear the words. Dillon ties his hands together and then ties them to the front door handle of the car then he goes after Ramirez in the backseat. Dillon gets shot in the shoulder but after tussling, is able to take away Ramirez’ gun and drag him out of the car. He is also tied to the back door handle.

Dillon and Avri rush over the mountain roads to where her son is located while Dillon tells the Sheriff the location of the limo and the two known felons. When they reach the end of a bumpy road, really a horse path, they have to go on foot the rest the way. Dillon remembers playing in this cave as a child. They charge up the rough mountain trail to a hidden cave where a little boy is squatting and sobbing. Avri rushes to him and after hugging him, the boy turns to Dillon.

Dillon sees himself in the boys face; same hair, same eyes. He asks the boy how old he is and he responds: “three and half years old and his name is not boy. It’s Drew, Drew Davidson.” Above the kid’s head, Dillon and Avri make eye contact until she turns away. They have a solitude trek to the car and then return Avri’s house. Dillon jumps out of the car and onto his nearby parked motorcycle and takes off. Avri knows Dillon well and knows he’ll head to Chase’s house so Avri calls to warn Chase.

When Dillon arrives, Chase is prepared with hot coffee and Elliot for backup. They ride horses to the large tree in the pasture they made into a tree fort as youngsters. Dillon wants the truth; so he asks them, his best friends, why didn’t they tell him he had a son. Chase and Elliot explain it wasn’t up to them, it was Avri’s responsibility and Avri made them swear to secrecy. After a heated discussion, Dillon realizes what he’s really angry about and agrees he has a second chance; a do-over and heads back to Avri’s house.

Drew asks Dillon if he’s his daddy. His babysitter has a daddy, but he never had a daddy. Dillon tells him he’s not sure how to be a daddy and they’d have to work at it together with his mom’s help.

Suddenly the lost note is mentioned again and Avri runs off to the Diner to search for it once and for all. She finds it under the bed and reads Dillon’s scrawl; his promise to love her forever and his contact address. She’s ashamed she didn’t believe him and blamed him for not keeping in touch with her when all these years she has address. She cries as she leaves the restaurant and hurries where she rushes into Dillon’s arms and apologizes for not writing, for not believing him.

“Whatever. They still belong to me.” He reaches for the candy again, but I refuse to let go. Gritting his teeth, he pounces on me, and we start rolling around on the bed. Within moments, he is on top of me and pins my arms to the mattress, forcing me to let go of the Snickers.

“God, you’re a jerk,” I say.

“At least I’m not a brat,” he retorts.

I scowl at him. He returns my scowl. But there’s something besides annoyance in his eyes.

Discomfort creeps into me when his hands don’t leave my arms. But something else joins the discomfort and it’s a lot like the mysterious something in his eyes.

I have always been torn between two halves of myself; one half revels in all things scientific and longs to explore the secrets of the universe, while the other half finds solace and excitement within the arts. When it came time to choose a college degree, I put aside my creative hobbies and perused a career path in biochemistry. For me, college was an expensive privilege, thus I decided a degree within STEM was the most logical route for my costly investments. Through my years in college I still tried to enjoy the arts, reading novels and drawing in my sketchbooks when time permitted.

Five long years later, I graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and molecular biology. I immediately began working full time in an academic research lab, it was miserable. I quickly grew weary and depressed in the toxic and hostile work environment created by our supervisor. I began interviewing for other jobs and exploring my creative hobbies again when my congenital heart condition required me to have another open-heart surgery.

In the months before my operation, I became determined to finish my first novel; I had
started and abandoned several over the years. Once I was well enough, I continued writing during my recovery. Nine months after my operation, I left my job at the research lab and invested more of myself in my novel. It wasn’t an easy transition and it did not happen over-night, but I decided to start a new career as a novelist.

Now, almost three years later I am proud to share with you my debut novel Legends of Lightning, Hidden Realm. I hope you enjoy reading this story as much as I enjoyed bringing it to life.
