About Being Authentic: A Memoir

Our existence is fragile. I learned that in many intricate ways, so I do not take today for granted. I do not know what tomorrow will bring. I do not even know if tomorrow will come.

On the eve of Thanksgiving 2016, I received the diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer. Next to dying, I fear the spread of cancer to my brain and losing my ability to think, speak, or write. This loss would be devastating to me.

The fragility of our life made me want to be authentic. Therefore, I am writing this memoir to be authentic—we become our true selves when we author who we are.

I am afraid of being forgotten. Death does frighten me. But more than dying, I am scared of having no one remember me or, even worse, of being recognized differently from who I was. At the same time, I have never thought that I was entitled to ask others not to forget me. But, not to be forgotten is precisely what I yearn for.

While I am writing for the other, I am simultaneously writing for myself. I am one of the readers and will test the subject as it gets written. My criteria are stricter. I want to say, “This is my narrative.”

I need to be able to say, “This is my narrative.”Patients with cancer often have an urgency to find meaning in life. They struggle with the illness, its emotional impact, and the consequences of treatments. However, with time, reflection, and support from others, they develop resilience. Cancer patients often are not passive. Instead, they choose different strategies to maintain and restore their health. They also leverage a variety of approaches to cope better with their struggle.
The book is for cancer patients who are tarrying at the limits of time. It is also for those who live around patients with cancer: caregivers, families and friends, and health care providers. People who struggle with other illnesses will also find aspects of their story reflected here. Also, the ones who have experienced a crisis of identity will discover elements of their story here as well. By sharing the experiences of the forty authentic individuals, the book opens the space for them to teach others. This book is about the essence of the human experience at its limits. It is for every reader.

No matter where I went, I always had a book with me. Thanks to 21st Century technology, I now have hundreds of books loaded on my phone and always with me. Through a bizarre series of events, I ended up in Fairbanks, Alaska. I never expected to retire to a place where golf courses are only open for four months out of the year. But that’s the way it is. It is off the beaten path. My wife and I get to watch the northern lights from our driveway. Our dog has lots of room to run. And temperatures reach fifty below zero. We have from three and a half hours of daylight in the winter to twenty-four hours in the summer.

It’s all part of the give and take of life. If we didn’t have those extremes, then everyone would live in the sub-arctic.

Patrick M Cunningham, began writing at the young age of Ten, and continued to write into his late teens, as a form of escapism to get away from the constant bullying he was enduring on a regular basis at school. According to Patrick, "I would just lose myself for hours in my own make believe world, just conjuring up these stories that revolved around four main characters. By the time I reached seventeen, I accumulated around 200 hundred stories that had these four characters battling the forces of Evil with the Devil himself hunting them down sending his minions to eradicate these four heroes for the end of days is drawing near as is his chance to rise again. Unfortunately for poor 'ol Satan one of histories greatest losers, nothing ever goes his way, for the Awesome Four, as I was soon to Dub them, were there to foil his every plot.Patrick bases his fiction around real life events, from people he encountered and places that had a history of being haunted, along with that, was Patrick's initiation into a Satanic cult at the age of Sixteen, that he reflects upon in one of his stories. "I wasn't a member for long. it was about as exciting as a trip to the Dentist. After around six months I left, but the weird rituals, incantations and sworn secrecy, were to fuel my imagination for many years to come,"
He continued to write up until he reached seventeen, then for a number of years, lost the desire to write and so abandoned his stories and banished them to attic where they remained for nearly fifteen years, before being rediscovered.

Apart from writing, Patrick is quite an accomplished martial artist. He took his first steps into the world of martial arts back in 1989 when he took up the art of Tae-Kwon-Do and quickly progressed up the ranks winning numerous medals and trophies over the years, but his greatest achievement came in 1993 when he earned third place in the All-Ireland championships that earned him the title of number three in the Country. After 12 years of non stop training, Patrick decided to move on with his journey and dabbled in Kick boxing and Aikido for a while before returning to what he loved best, Tae-Kwon-Do, though his days of training are far and few between these days he still keeps his flexibility and skills sharp by training on his own four to five times a week.

Heavy metal has been a passion for Patrick for over thirty years so much so that he has his own podcast called Evil FM that puts out two shows a week, and he was also once upon a time a heavy metal drummer with Iron Maiden's Nicko McBrain his all-time hero, but Patrick isn't done with drumming yet, he has plans to get back behind the kit and start gigging again real soon, something he is really looking forward to doing.
