One Sip at a Time: a Memoir

About One Sip at a Time: a Memoir

Rita was born as a child of The Great Depression, a “mistake” on a failing farm in Nebraska, the fifth child of a destitute father nearly 70 years old. She grew up thinking she was unremarkable but all who engaged with her thought otherwise: she was remarkable in every way from her beauty to her wit to her insouciance to her skilled copywriting.

She began her career by writing liner notes for Capitol Records, casually “hanging out” with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Elvis Presley and other mega stars, simply enjoying their rehearsals and recording sessions, attending the Academy Awards numerous times as one of their guests. From there, she made her way over to NYC after a brief (and odd) interlude in Minneapolis.

Once in the city, Rita joined every leading marketing agency from Tinker’s Thinkers to Doyle, Dane & Bernbach to J.W. Thompson and more, surviving the Mad Men era of three martini lunches and ass-slapping. She became legendary for her perfume ads, launching the field with her provocative work for the House of Caron, Fleurs de Rocaille perfume (1963). The tagline, “Lead him down the garden path and lock the gate” was so risqué at the time that Time magazine and The New York Times banned the ads unless she removed “lock the gate”.

Next, the launch of Norell (1969), the first designer perfume where her tagline “Every time is the first time” still runs today, five decades later. She helped catalyze the “London Look” by introducing the model Jean Shrimpton to an American audience with Yardley perfumes and cosmetics.

Rita ascended the ranks quickly and was recruited by Revlon to become their first female vice president. There, she worked with Lauren Hutton to launch Charlie, a women’s perfume, and Chaz, a men’s cologne. Chaz featured a man with a manly moustache that American women were soon swooning for: one year after the ad campaign, Tom Selleck was cast as Magnum P.I. Rita was married twice to older, divorced men with children, defied stereotypes and went back to work after having children of her own and was one of the first to pay “manimony” to her ex-husband who was less successful than herself.

Rita enjoyed her life just as she enjoyed her martinis – one sip at a time. That was Rita, and this is her story.

Author Bio:
Growing up, I was that nerdy kid who loved playing with frogs and bugs so the pursuit of a path in biology happened quite naturally. But I loved writing! If only I could find a career that let me do both…

Enabled with a PhD in molecular biology from Queen’s University with research conducted at Case Western Reserve University along with a Masters in physiology from the University of Toronto, I initially set out on a path to advance science. Along the way, I learned that I preferred sharing information, guiding others and writing about my observations versus being at the bench. Not to mention the fact that I was accidentally exposed to a lot of radiation in a new lab that shouldn’t have been certified so quickly and that didn’t turn out so well for me.

The duality of my career as a scientist then as an author and journalist is hardly a surprise. Curiosity is at the core of both. However, being curious is only one part of the equation. Being a storyteller is the other.

Once I tapped into my “special sauce” of simplifying complex information into digestible bits intended for a broad audience, I was on my way. I’ve been part of the leadership teams for a Fortune 10 and a couple of Fortune 100s driving market research, innovation and marketing. I’ve also worked for and managed a number of startups and helped many of them launch, including a couple of my own. Today, I ghost-write for countless clients helping them tell their stories. In my spare time (haha – read “I never sleep”), I run a podcast, Women-in-Tech LIKE A BOSS and write a weekly Monday motivation and Friday wine down and chill column (GritDaily.com), among other content that features femTech and the achievements of its founders plus investors.

Two novels have been published under my name. My first, “One Sip at a Time: a Memoir,” won the 2018 US National Indie Book Gold Medal. “COVID-19: The Battle for Humanity” is my second novel.

I live in a busy household just outside of NYC (yes, on the Jersey side) with a wonderful man who likes wine just about as much as I do, together with two amazing wish-they-were-mine teenagers, two rescue dogs and a bunch of fish that swim mindlessly in a ridiculously large tank that is perilously perched above all of our home electronics. It’s a pretty average life, but I’ll take it.

This is a low angst, clean, sweet Regency romance of 70,000 words (280 pages).

George Wickham joined the militia in Meryton to enjoy the company of handsome ladies and perhaps win a well dowered wife of his own. Instead, he is wounded in a training accident a few days after his arrival.
Miss Elizabeth Bennet, distressed on Mr. Wickham’s behalf, confronts Mr. Darcy, the man she believes dishonorably deprived Wickham of a valuable living in the church. She learns, to her shock, that the handsome militia man had been thoroughly dishonest about his former dealings with the handsome master of Pemberley.
With many false beliefs swept away, and a wounded and disfigured Mr. Wickham contemplating his life choices, beloved characters from Pride and Prejudice find themselves on a new trajectory for their lives. For when the Almighty shines His light into the lives of men and women, the blind will see.

Renee keeps a diary after she finds out her daddy is sick with cancer. She even starts praying and asking God to make him better. But, what if he doesn’t get any better? She is worried that she won’t be able to talk to her daddy after he has gone, but her daddy encourages her to keep talking to him, no matter what.

“But how will I know if you can hear me?” she asks.
“Just have faith,” her daddy answers.

Even as he becomes sicker and weaker, she learns about the meaning of faith and sees how we can still have peace, hope and joy during such a difficult time.

It is not easy to talk to your kids about the difficult and uncomfortable topics of death, loss and grief. Hopefully, with this book, readers can be uplifted and learn about how faith in Christ can bring us peace and comfort, knowing that death is not the end, but the beginning of an eternity with our Father in Heaven.

This beautifully illustrated book aims to help families, schools and communities start conversations about death and grief by bringing hope and comfort. Death is a topic that is all too often avoided, yet it is inevitable in all our lives. We need to start having open and honest conversations with our children and loved ones to prepare for such times as these, to be able to cope with loss and grief, which can stay with us for a long time. It is important to find a way out of the darkness and sadness we will inevitably feel.

The Gallipoli Evacuation by Peter Hart

About The Gallipoli Evacuation by Peter Hart

The evacuation of Gallipoli was a life or death gamble. The expedition to wrest the Narrows from the Turks had failed, Constantinople remained an impossible dream. Now in December 1915, some 135,000 men, nearly 400 guns and 15,000 horses/mules were collectively trapped in the bridgeheads at Anzac, Suvla and Helles. The invaders found themselves caught in a nightmare scenario: they could not advance, but how was it possible to retreat from trenches overlooked by the Turks? Who would take the responsibility for the hard decisions to be taken? The soldiers? Or the vacillating politicians busy ‘passing the buck’ back home in London? With every day that passed the Turks moved up more guns, threatening to blast to pieces the flimsy piers, breakwaters and blockships that acted as makeshift harbours to feed and supply tens of thousands of men. And winter was coming. But the evacuation plans were brilliant, especially the early introduction of ‘silent periods’ to confuse the Turks. But it was still a damn close-run thing. A spell of bad weather in the final days might have destroyed the flimsy piers, leaving thousands trapped helpless should the Turkish guns open up and their infantry swarm over No Man’s Land. This then is the story of how the Gallipoli garrison escaped to fight another day.

D.A. Lee is a Bangladeshi-born British author, artist and poet, best known for her Novel 'Written' published in 2019. Raised in a small town in Lancashire, England, Lee describes the cultural challenges of growing up in a Bengali household whilst navigating a western world.

Lee's Novel whilst fictional, draws on many of her own experiences of growing up in a Muslim family and explores the underworld of cultural expectations, arranged marriages, honour, abuse and domestic violence that often limit women's choices.

Lee first started writing as a form of self-healing through the challenges of home life. The word 'Written' had become a poignant theme throughout the book, a word often expressed culturally to describe the notion of determinism and predestination adopted by most traditional Muslim families as a way of life. Lee takes us on a journey through her character Eleanor, a young girl caught between a web of family secrets and lies where she comes into conflict with these values.

Today Lee is an advocate for women's freedom of choice and encourages women to speak out and seek help if they feel they are in danger.

Steve Rivers is a thoroughly un-British Englishman. He dislikes tea, hates cricket, and has rather decent teeth. (Although he does adore football)

He also writes – and he has been writing for fun since childhood. From the epic adventures of "Back to the Go-Kart," which involved all of his friends time-traveling in a complete rip-off, to awful Star Trek fanfiction and Star Wars online adventures in his teens.

Now, he is a full-time novelist, and is fast becoming known as "That guy chipping away at the mountain with his teaspoon." Solar Rift is the culmination of an idea that has been growing for over fifteen years now, bubbling away and taking on a life of its own. It merges together everything he loves about science-fiction, classic 80's and 90's movies, espionage and crime thrillers, to cyberpunk and Machiavellian intrigue.

With his trusty writing-partner, Jasmin Joachims, he has currently just finished writing the novella prologue to the series, 2120, and is already two-thirds through the huge first novel, 2121. With the series likely to run to at least five full-length novels, Steve may well get through more than a couple of spoons.

Private Eye Bob Roosevelt, once again not finding the love of his life, heads for the north country in December. His guardian angel tells Roosevelt he is an idiot and most sane people head to Florida or California in the winter. Roovelt ends up in Minnesota and falls smack dab in the middle of a gambling ring, a coven of witches, a priest who likes good whiskey, a lady who has lost her heart, and a little boy that needs a friend. To top it off there is a frozen body and two murdered cats. A snowmobile ride through humor and murder and a cast of characters your mother warned you about.

Over the past several years OPEN TALON PRESS has released a highly acclaimed four book comedy mystery series about a Vietnam vet and his not so nice Guardian Angel, a hilarious golf book, an off center love story, two literary novels, a highly acclaimed reader participation novel and its sequel, and a tongue in cheek writing instructional book based on a course he taught that goes against the grain of what most creative writing instructors hold as dear. Swisher’s novels can be found on Amazon, your local bookstore, Author Central, Facebook, and Goodreads. He can be reached via his Facebook page. At the moment two fiction novels are being edited, he is working on a third, and a contemporary fiction novel, THE LONELY COWBOY, will soon be released by OPEN TALON PRESS.
