On the steamy jungle planet Oligump Atom continues this trade when he accepts a contract on a power-hungry wife. In the process he crosses paths with Shi, a war-hardened gunslinger, and offers her a job on his ship. He also brings on a mechanic named Byron. Uncertain as to his path, Atom tries to plan to contingencies he cannot see.
With a hold full of lumber he heads to Rommel, a barren world further down the Fingers. There he finds a pilot named Daisy and executes another contract for a broker who finds a buyer for his lumber.
In the midst of his tumultuous survival a pair of miners from the Fingertips finds him and hires Atom to help break a labor strike. A dying ship awaits at the end of the call and after a free jumping rescue Atom is introduced to Mei Ling Karahkwa.
On an errand to gather troops for a blood feud after the death of her son and consort, Mei Ling is returned home safely. There Atom plays a pivotal role in disarming the feud and building a friendship with Mei Ling as mutual mourners.
From Kojima, Mei Ling’s homeworld, Atom presses on to Shelley to help the miners. Arriving on planet he discovers a few surprises. First, a mercenary army is in a blockading position around the planet, and second, a friend from the emperor’s court is in residence after fleeing her role as courtesan and assassin. Hither Espiranz Del Sol fills in more of the Atom’s backstory and the rest of the crew begins to piece the puzzle together.
With the final member of his crew in place Atom sets out to tackle the problem of the mercenaries, but not before the mercs pay the planet a visit. In the first confrontation Shi loses her leg, Byron is captured, and Atom’s ship is disabled.
Refusing to leave a crewmember in the hands of the enemy Atom sets out with a stealthy free-jump in mind, but is sidetracked when a mysterious mining ship appears in orbit. With the ship in a decaying orbit, Atom and his crew investigate only to find that the ship is an elaborate trap set by the Walkerhan.
Atom escapes, but not before receiving a grievous wound.
He awakens aboard the mercenary flagship after several days in the med ward. Using her talents as a courtesan, Hither convinced the mercenary captain that she aimed to collect the bounty on Atom’s head. Once he recovered, however, her loyalties show through and she frees Atom and his tight knitting crew to escape and rescue Byron in one clean getaway.
As he leaves the ship his AI drops a worm that activates the defensive suites of the mercenary ships. Atom makes a clean getaway as the fleet destroys itself.
Once back on Shelley the power behind the scenes steps from the shadows, the Walkerhan. In what should be a one sided mop-up fight a few surprises turn the tide, leaving Atom and company standing on the landing pad, awaiting an orbital bombardment that will wipe them from existence.
It pays to make friends, however, and Mei Ling arrives just in time to engage the orbiting ship.
Safe for the moment, Atom formally invites his savior to a ball at the governor’s mansion where he privately kills the disgraced leader of the mercenary army and leaves his body in the lap of the governor. In a moment of connection Atom and Mei Ling realize they have more in common than they had anticipated and that connection leads to a kiss to take their relationship a step farther.
While the assassination does not eliminate the Walkerhan or the governor, it sends a message that Atom Ulvan is not a man to be trifled with.
The story ends with Atom headed into the black, when a job offer arrives…
