I have been competing in sports for over 20 years. I played 4 varsity sports in High School, then went on to compete in Division 1 Track in college. Since then, I have been competing at the elite level in crossfit, weightlifting and obstacle course racing for the last 7 years. However, this all changed suddenly. In January of 2020, I had ACL surgery. I had trained a lot up until the day before my surgery because I knew I wanted to be as fit as possible for my recovery. The day after my ACL surgery, I went to physical therapy. My physical therapist told me my quad strength was way ahead of most the day after surgery. This was great news and no surprise seeing as how I prepared for it. I thought I was well on my way to recovery and competing in my sport again, but as the days went on, something didn’t seem right. My knee started to get more swollen and I was losing energy.

A week later, I found myself back in a hospital bed. I was waiting to have another surgery because it turned out I had an infection. I was in the hospital for 4 days after the second surgery. When I got out, I spent over a month in a bed at my mom’s house. I had an IV PICC line that ran through my vein in my left arm that needed to be injected with intense antibiotics 3x’s a day. I lost about 10 lb in this time period from lack of appetite and muscle atrophy, not just in my leg but my whole body. I went from being an elite level athlete to not even being able to walk to the toilet. My resting heart rate went from an average of 48 beats per minute to an average of 90 beats per minute. Being fit was no longer my expertise. For the first time in my life, I had fallen completely off of my fitness, as if my body had taken a clean slate from all of the hard work I had put in.

This collection consists of excerpts from a decade worth of journal entries, all waiting patiently here to be consumed and digested by you. I’ve decided to subdivide this collection into two sections: Poetry Jams and Music Lyrics. The first section focuses on a more classical approach of writing poetry by directly adhering to rhyme schemes. The kicker here is that each of these poems were realized within minutes of an initial spark of imagination! The music lyrics found in section two have been adapted from my work as a singer-songwriter under the pseudonym Karly D. The collective themes herein discuss physical and emotional isolation in the twenty-first century, anticipatory anxiety and the fear of death, addiction to negative emotions, love loss, and complete honesty. The lighter works entail daydreaming about the future of humankind through a lens of science fiction and the idea that modern chemistry can be as exciting as the alchemy of old.
I wanted to begin this adventure with my most precious piece of artwork, the syllabic verses. The first sentence dictates the syllable-by-syllable rhyme scheme which is mirrored by the second sentence. This dictation is repeated throughout the poem “Carved Heart In Trunk”.

Hello I am Marty Myers

I have always been an avid reader since a very early age. Hearing old family ghost stories around campfires. My mother is a fine storyteller who grew up near the Hornet Spook Light in Missouri and spent many nights watching the mysterious light winking up and down its dark country road. I heard tales of ghostly cars offering hitchhikers rides, phantom footsteps eternally circling old haunted graveyards and spectral ladies floating across old country roads only to be struck by cars late at night. These and many other stories kindled my interest in ghosts. So I went out and got involved with a great paranormal team called the United Paranormal Project and have been hunting with them every since.

I have worked all my life trying many different jobs. I have been a cook at a dozen different restaurants, a restaurant manager at two different chains, an appliance delivery man, a floral delivery man, a janitor, a factory worker in a half dozen different companies, a farmhand, a tour guide and a contractor. Jakob Wassermann (March 10, 1873 – January 1, 1934) was a German writer and novelist of Jewish descent.

Born in Fürth, Wassermann was the son of a shopkeeper and lost his mother at an early age. He showed literary interest early and published various pieces in small newspapers. Because his father was reluctant to support his literary ambitions, he began a short-lived apprenticeship with a businessman in Vienna after graduation.

He completed his military service in Würzburg. Afterward, he stayed in southern Germany and in Zurich. In 1894 he moved to Munich. Here he worked as a secretary and later as a copy editor at the paper Simplicissimus. Around this time he also became acquainted with other writers such as Rainer Maria Rilke, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Thomas Mann.

In 1896 he released his first novel, Melusine (his surname means "water-man" in German, while a "Melusine" (or "Melusina") is a figure of European legends and folklore, a feminine spirit of fresh waters in sacred springs and rivers).

From 1898 he was a theater critic in Vienna. In 1901 he married Julie Speyer, whom he divorced in 1915. Three years later he was married again to Marta Karlweis.

After 1906, he alternated between Vienna and Altaussee in Styria.

In 1926, he was elected to the Prussian Academy of Arts. He resigned in 1933, narrowly avoiding expulsion by the Nazis. In the same year, his books were banned in Germany owing to his Jewish ancestry.

He died on 1 January 1934 at his home in Altaussee of a heart attack.

Wassermann's work includes poetry, essays, novels, and short stories. His most important works are considered the novel The Maurizius Case (Der Fall Maurizius, 1928) and the autobiography, My Life as German and Jew (Mein Weg als Deutscher und Jude, 1921), in which he discussed the tense relationship between his German and Jewish identities.
