He was present at both Battles of Bull Run and other skirmishes of the War Between the States, including the Battle of Fredericksburg. His tour of duty ended with a shot through his lung at the Siege of Knoxville where he was captured by Confederate soldiers and held as a prisoner of war for six days. Fortunately, he survived his wounds and wrote his reminiscences down in journal form for his four children.

His great-granddaughter, author Patricia Camburn (P.C.) Zick, presents his journal, along with additional annotations about the war in general.
