This book attempts to take the reader through the passage of time by using a blend of fiction, both realistic and unrealistic, along with metaphors to connect the past and present dispensations whilst revealing that the spirit of slavery, though disguised, still exists today.
There will be readers who may find a few of the passages extremely graphic in nature. However, the actual atrocities experienced by the slaves could never be accurately penned.
Focus is also placed on the psychological conditioning of the slaves by their masters through breaking the slaves’ will and negatively repurposing the slaves, which would govern the behaviour of the slaves and their descendants for hundreds of years.
The effects of this repurposing can be seen through how the removal of the strong black man as the head of the household has impacted the black family structure, the behaviour of black men, and how they view black women.
Several methods were used to implant divisiveness amongst blacks, which caused doubt, distrust, lack of communication, and slowed growth. For instance, deliberate focus was placed on creating a hierarchy of shades of blackness which to this day keeps blacks divided.
The book uses everyday events to actively showcase that the spirit of slavery is still actively at work, whether blatantly or otherwise. The scenarios highlighted act only as catalysts to get your mental cogs turning.
