In 1492, Christopher Columbus started a process of migration that changed the face of the West. My grandfather, José Fernández, left his small village of Nocedo del Valle in Galicia, Spain at the age of 16 in the hopes of a better tomorrow for himself and his descendants. He gave up the only world he knew for a lonely existence in the New World. The process of acculturation at such a young age without familial support was extremely difficult for him. After eight years in Cuba, he settled in the Dominican Republic where he married and had a family of his own.
Our family emigrated from the Dominican Republic to New York City in 1963. We were fortunate to have had the opportunity to obtain a visa and green card to enter the U.S. and traveled by airplane. Although my family’s journey was not a treacherous one, as immigrants we faced the same challenges all other migrants before and after have encountered and continue to suffer.
In the early sixty’s the Hispanic population in New York City was small. All communication, written and oral, was in English. The school curriculum was all English; total immersion was the only option. There was no Latino Community to help with adapting and growing within the dominant English-speaking culture.
My mother was working outside of the home for the first time in her life. As you can imagine, there was ample opportunity to stumble linguistically and culturally. It was like the blind leading the blind, and we all made plenty of mistakes along the way.
I can honestly say that I do not remember when I learned to speak, read, and write English. All I know is that I was able to overcome these obstacles and excel academically.
For the most part, I spent the first 18 years of my life in a predominantly Spanish-speaking environment. We spoke Spanish at home, and most of the kids in my elementary and high school, the local businesses, and friends were of Hispanic descent. There was little to no exposure to other cultures. I did not recognize the deficiencies in my lack of cultural diversity, communication, and social etiquette until I ventured into the professional working world of mid-town Manhattan.
I attended an all-girl vocational public High School in New York City where they prepared us to enter the job market upon graduation. We learned to master the art of shorthand, typing, and developing business correspondence. However, they failed to teach us office politics, protocol, and professional office etiquette.
I did extremely well in the classroom environment, but I failed miserably at my first corporate assignment at a Wall Street bank. I was way out of my league. I was not ready for the corporate world.
When I think back to the group of girls who graduated with me from high school, very few, if any, were ready to enter the workforce. We were all a bit rough around the edges. After High School, I attended a nine-month secretarial program. When I graduated from secretarial school, I was a bit more refined but still had a long way to go. As you can imagine, you can take the girl out of the projects, but it is extremely difficult to take the projects out of the girl.
Growing up in the projects, there were no role models, no one to emulate. Therefore, I had to do things my way, figure things out on my own by trial and error. The first thing I had to do was accept my blended European/African/Indigenous roots. I had to embrace my brown skin, curly hair, and flat nose with a sense of pride, and move on from there. I had to learn to accept, respect and love myself before I could expect this new world to accept me.
When I lived in the projects, everyone was the same. I knew where I fit in. However, when I entered the professional working world at a law firm, I saw the differences in speech, custom, and culture. The more educated I became and the more time I spent with Anglos, the further I shifted from my culture. I was drifting from my roots and the people I grew up with, feeling as though I did not belong in either world. I was a part-time participant of two distinct worlds as I conducted my day to day activities.
The more a person reconciles and fuses the two worlds, the harder it is for either world to accept them. For many immigrants in the United States, moving from one world to the other is sometimes very lonely. Attempting to fit into an ethnic peer group, social networks, and familial relationships can be extremely difficult, as one delicately straddles the tradition, values, and beliefs between the two worlds.
How do you excel when the odds are overwhelmingly stacked against you every step of the way? How does an immigrant, born in a small town, in the Dominican Republic, and raised in New York City’s public housing development, wind up in a Fortune 5 corporation?
My son told me that a person from the South Bronx once asked him, “What does your mother do for a living?”
He responded, “She is a businesswoman in Mobil Oil Corporation.”
The person responded, “People like us do not get jobs like that.”
Well, they do, and I did by empowering myself and creating an amazing career. I did so by not letting the naysayers get me down and by believing in myself and my abilities.
I entered the corporate world in 1982 after six years in a small law firm. I had been married for seven years, had three young children, and was still working on my undergraduate degree in International Business Management at Pace University. At that time, there were no role models, no one to emulate, no one to offer advice on the dos and don’ts of the corporate environment, so I had to do it my way. I had to learn things on my own by trial and error, making a lot of mistakes along the way. Some of these mistakes caused me some career moves, and others I was able to overcome.
I often wonder what life would have been like for me had my family not emigrated to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic. When I visit this beautiful, yet poor island and see the need in the eyes of the people, I think, “That could have been me.” So, I feel extremely blessed and grateful for everything that I have been able to obtain and accomplish.

Sylvia Engdahl is best known as the author of highly-acclaimed Young Adult novels, one of which was a Newbery Honor book and a finalist for the 2002 Book Sense Book of the Year in the Rediscovery category. However, her Children of the Star trilogy, originally written for teens, was republished as adult SF, and she has written four adult novels plus a nonfiction book. Although all her fiction takes place in the distant future on hypothetical worlds and thus is categorized as science fiction, it is directed more to mainstream readers than to avid science fiction fans and is enjoyed by a wider audience than seekers of the genre.
