About Durga Noir: Part One by Robert Owen

‘Durga Noir’ is a pulp style detective noir thriller set in an alternative history World – ‘The Bharat Empire’.
The main action takes places in 1970s Calcutta where a down at heel private eye is hired to help find the missing wife of a billionaire industrialist, a small catch being the that the vanished spouse is an old flame of the dysfunctional detective.
Why has the wife gone missing?
Who is responsible?
Who is the mysterious ‘Irishman’?
What is the connection with a seemingly catastrophic event in the prologue?

As the plot progress it will become clear that the past of the protagonist and the major supporting characters are intimately intertwined with the current mystery.
The detective will discover that he is in fact a pawn in a large-scale conspiracy that threatens the stability of the Empire, being manipulated by a ruthless faction who wish to eliminate their opponents.

The book is written as a first-person narrative from the point of view of the protagonist, and though the character is male, there are two strong supporting female characters who will be central to both the plot and the final resolution.

The novel will be published in three parts, with Part One launching on 6th January 2020. Part Two will launch early to Mid February 2020, and the final instalment will be released at the end of March 2020.

This novel is intended as an entry into a wider series set in the universe of the ‘Bharat Empire’, a reality in which the British Indian Empire still exists and rivals the United States for dominance across the World. This isn’t the British Raj as we know it however; this is the Indian Raj ruled principally by Indian statesmen since the days of the Bengali Renaissance in the 1800s.
Later novels in the series will cover the history of the Empire, how it diverged from our own history, why it did so, and who is responsible.

I entered the building—which, despite its name, was just another steel barn—from the east, taking out my Maglite and turning it on. The chickens were there; sleeping (I presumed), although it was hard to tell with animals who routinely slept with one eye open (as they had often done on my grandfather’s farm, an evolutionary adaptation, he’d explained, that allowed them to rest while also watching for predators). I suppose that’s when I first noticed it, the fact that the chickens seemed bigger (I mean, bigger even than earlier in the day), more robust, and that their combs seemed more colorful—not brighter, per say, but deeper, redder, more fearsome, somehow. Yes, I decided, sweeping the Maglite’s beam across them, stirring them not at all, they were definitely sleeping. I swiveled to inspect the other pen, the one on the other side of the walkway—and promptly froze. For there was a chicken—a great, golden rooster—staring back at me through the mesh. Just staring, his amber yet bloodshot eyes gleaming. And so startling and unexpected was this that I recoiled virtually immediately and gripped the Maglite tighter—ready, on pure instinct, to use it as a bludgeon—before turning and exiting the structure, wondering why I had been so compelled to go there in the first place and why too I had napped and dreamed of chicken shopping in the hours right before work; a dream in which I’d reached for a package of breasts and realized that what was pressing against the clear plastic was not chicken at all but a human face.

I’m Dan Eitreim and I worked as a professional photographer running my own photo studio for over 20 years. I’ve never apprenticed or worked for any other photographers. Because of this, I’ve had to learn and develop my photography skills on my own.

My first attempts were dismal, to say the least…so I studied, practiced and developed my photo skills and along the way I not only learned how to put the “wow” into my photos, but I’ve also learned how to teach others to do the same!

As image-bearers we are made to be like Jesus, but how often we are not! Vicki Diemert has given us a gift in this book. She is a hugely gifted Biblical counselor who helps us all become more like Jesus as we grow in seeing, hearing and loving others.
