There was never any question that Lee Hadan would be a writer. Born and raised in the sci-fi/fantasy community, she spent most of her early years listening to tall tales around the campfire, and later, spent her summers working at the local Renaissance Fantasy Faires.

With her parents both being voracious readers themselves, lee grew up surrounded by books of all sorts, and discovered her passion not only for reading fantasy, but later, for writing it herself. A retro retiree and old school cool, when I’m not refereeing three twit dogs (two of them rescues determined to pave the road to hell with good intentions), or working out at the community pool, I spend most of my spare time writing. I, Dedra Muhammad was born Dedra Lori Bradley in Pontiac, Michigan. I loved…I mean I completely loved to read as a youngster. I can recall staring at the tall bookshelves in our library, imagining each book as a jeweled piece of fruit I could pluck at will. Nothing was off limits.
Once, I was in K-Mart with my mom whenever I spotted a book called “How to be the Perfect Liar” or something like that. I thumbed through it filled with amazement since it was absolutely creative and hilarious. My mother refused to purchase the likes of it. Later, she went back without me to buy it. She stated she had promised herself that if any of her children ever took an interest in reading, she would support them.
As a member of my high school’s track team, I would huddle in the back seats of buses reading Black romance magazines with my friends. Things were innocent in those days. I read everything from entire encyclopedia sets to the Falconhurst and Mandingo series…all the way to everything by Donald Coins, Charlotte Bronte, John Grisham, Richard Wright….oh! The genres were endless! However, my idea to author a book had absolutely nothing to do with becoming an author. I merely wanted to get a hidden story told. The only way to do that would be if I wrote that story. Making Mary is my pride and joy.
I am a College and Career Counselor in a high school; I have written plays, directed musicals, I speak publicly on diverse topics. Most recently, I presented two topics at the Alabama Counselors Association Annual Convention in Montgomery in November 2019. I am a doctoral student in the School of Counseling and Human Services at Capella University, and I have two (twins) sons who are freshmen at Jackson State University. My first child died when she was only two years old. She had a rare disease called Bilary Artresia. I don’t talk about that much. My husband is a retired law enforcement officer; I have two brothers, one sister, one half brother and one half sister. If you are still reading this, I love you! Lolol.

And Isaac’s band mates, Miles and Toby, point out that if Jess is going to spend the summer with them, she is going to hear the lyrics of the new songs he’s written. The songs are about their lifestyle, an endless catalogue of drinking, partying, sex and drugs. Isaac plays the songs to her, she accepts that is the way he has been living and eventually they achieve something like peace and start to enjoy their time together.
Toby works out that when Isaac was managing Jess’s expectations, he left out an important part. While they are travelling, they use seduction as a sport, it’s a game with planned moves, rules and keeping score. Isaac has stopped playing while he is with Jess and Toby accuses him of being frightened of his wife. He starts baiting him when Jess is around. As Toby makes his comments Jess becomes aware of the game, makes derogatory remarks about it and Isaac resents them.
Jess however is still in love with Isaac and wants what she used to have, a husband and child but when she starts to act possessive, he walks away from her again.
At the hotel he decides he has made a mistake and goes back to Jess but it is still only a temporary arrangement.
During the next three months he’s with Jess he writes songs for a new album and in the songs, he explores his life and their relationship.

The writing bug seized me at an early age and basically never let go. My goal is to write something every day, although usually, in truth, it’s not even something I have to think about. So I’m easily working on stuff at least 350 days a year.

Incidentally I think the modern scholastic experience tends to make people NOT want to write and NOT interested in books. That many of us have managed to like this stuff anyway seems some sort of miracle, and was probably instilled before the system really got a hold of us, or something we stumbled onto much later. So I feel lucky to have discovered something I still really like to do, the only thing I’ve ever really had much interest in doing for a “job.” To date I have published 5 books, which is kind of distressing, that the total is still so low, despite working on this stuff basically non-stop. But I do also maintain a couple different blogs, and have contributed to both online and print publications, in a wide variety of subject matter and styles, so this stuff does keep me busy and anything but bored.

The first time I wrote anything significant was the last day of my 11th grade year, when I came home and jotted down everything that had recently happened. This was the moment a switch flipped, where all of the talk about “someone should write this stuff down!” meaning the daily exploits of my friends and me, hilarious ideas we came up with, conversations had, and so forth, where that turned into the sudden realization that…wait a second, there is no “we” here. Writing, for the most part, is not a team sport. If you ever find yourself saying “someone should” write this all down, that someone is probably going to wind up being you.

As a small boy in Lincoln, Nebraska, I listened enrapt to my grandmother reading me children’s stories, such as The Little Engine That Could. I also recall the elementary school librarian who read us Winnie the Pooh, imitating all the voices. And I remember the first summer I was allowed to ride my bike to the library on my own.

Writing started for me in school. Teachers encouraged me to pursue what they perceived as a gift. For me, my imagination was a challenge as much as a gift. I found the real world so much less enthralling.

In my Christian high school, the English teacher supplied me with unassigned novels. I wrote the senior class play and served as editor of both the yearbook and the school newspaper.

At Houghton College, I majored in writing, including coursework in poetry and fiction. But I also majored in biblical studies and was persuaded to take my writing skills in a more “respectable” direction—academia and nonfiction writing. Remember that less enthralling real world?
​
When all my academic work led to no great employment breakthrough, I hopped from there onto that rapid conveyor known as the tech industry. Starting in the 1990s, I shaped a new career, eventually starting my own computer consulting firm.
​
During those years, I focused on raising two boys and cherished the role of doing the bedtime reading, including attempting all the voices in The Chronicles of Narnia series. I also composed a few stories from scratch for my attentive little audience, usually around a campfire.
​
I started writing again in 2006. Following a friend’s suggestion, I meditated on scripture by imagining myself present on a day when Jesus healed an entire multitude. That meditation turned into my first novel, And He Healed Them All. Closing the gap between the sparse descriptions in the Gospels and what must have been a rich miraculous experience enticed me.
​
A series of unusual events (ask me someday) prodded me to write my second novel, The Reign: Out of Tribulation. I began self-publishing with those first two books. My third novel, Seeing Jesus, expanded into a series when numerous readers begged me for more. As it turns out, that kind of begging is hard to resist.
In all, I have published fifteen books on Amazon, fourteen of them as installments in one of my series. I am constantly working to improve my skills and to better share my message with the reading public.

Anyone tracking my address could guess that I’ve had some setbacks in my life. But God has stayed the same, even as I evolve and have to start over again.

Now I am married and living in Vernon Hills, Illinois, attending a vibrant church and meeting new people. I work part-time on my computer consulting business, and I devote much of the rest of my time to writing and marketing my books, with my wife as my highly motivated marketing director.
