When I was about five or six years old, I wrote my first book. I have no idea what it was about. All I remember is that the kindergarten teacher folded a piece of paper, cut it and tacked it together to form a book that could almost fit in my hand. I sat at the little red table and dictated a story that she wrote down with a blue pen. Funny, how I can remember the blue pen but nothing about the story.
Throughout the years writing has come and gone in my life. I always enjoyed writing assignments in school, but for some reason, I didn’t think I could write outside of that. At some point, I got a bit more serious and realized I enjoyed sitting down every day to create worlds and characters. Today I love it.
There are two important creators to any story, the writer, me, and the reader, you. My story isn’t finished until it takes form in your imagination. I give you the blueprint, the main points, and you make it come to life.
When I’m not writing I like creating in other ways. I crochet. Right now I’m planning to make a dragon for my newborn niece. I bake, I cook and I play games where creation or exploration are main themes. I also garden and am currently trying to keep a couple of chili plants alive over the winter.

December 2019

Hello. I am Eric Weber.

I am twenty-six at the time of writing this.

I am with my girlfriend, Jen Stuart, and it’s now December 2019; I have no idea about the date. Running for your life makes you forget those things. Not that digital watches and cell phones are of any help in our situation.

The assault on the town’s defensive grid also brought with it that bizarre energy field which rendered modern gadgets useless.

The weather outside is freezing, so we’re holed up here in this abandoned hunting cabin and I decided to make the most of our time by writing these notes. Or do we call them memoirs? A diary? I really don’t know.

We intend to reach another reported safe area across the border in Saskatchewan, Canada. Other safe zones were mentioned in the last report we heard but they’re all too far away for us. Hopefully, we’ll make it to an existing safe zone.

The list of sites, though, is shrinking day by day. But the report we have is now a week old, dated from the day before the Great Falls Defense Area fell. That’s in Montana, by the way. We’re lucky we got away. I really don’t know if it’s still valid—but what other option did we have?

I am human, by the way (in case some other entity gets hold of this record). We were the dominant species on this planet until what we call the Event happened.

Now, we don’t know who’s the top dog on this planet we call Earth.

Hell, we don’t even know what we’re sharing the place with.

There are innumerable worlds out there. Explore, let your imagination fly. Unlike the protagonists in the stories, there is no dark Elder god, a tentacled monstrosity, a stabby assassin, a vampire or ten, or a vengeful deity waiting outside your door. Nor will opening a book suck you into a separate dimension. Maybe.
