Partially visible, in the flickering light of his cooking stove, Ramas sat alone. With a small paring knife, he shaved a piece of softwood into the image of a tiny female Fae. Each line, each feature, was being pulled from the locked chambers of his mind. As the figure emerged, it opened the sealed floodgates of his memories. When finished, he set it on his cooking table and closed his eyes. Tears touched his cheeks, symbols speaking silently of lost opportunities. Reaching out with his mind, he sought a connection; sweat dripped from his forehead, his breathing became short, his body ached as he sat motionless, waiting for her to come to life. He knew the connection could only last a moment, so he had to be ready to act.
He would never know if he waited a few minutes or hours, the full level of his consciousness dedicated to preparing for the strike. “There!” The sensation was weak and disoriented, but he shaped the patterns that Muirisc and Ala taught him. He projected them as soon as he made contact, a tiger striking with deadly precision. Slamming a mind lock in place and then opening a pathway into her dreams.
The first time he ‘touched’ her… weeks ago, it had been a momentary glimpse through the long tunnel of a vacuum-sealed dream void. Ramas had struggled to find ‘his voice’ in the dream but managed to catch her attention. For some reason, the words he tried to shape came out as a series, of course, squawks. By the time he remembered that in the dream-scape he was a crow, it was too late to change forms. All he could do was pull her away from the gate and cause her to sleep. “Next time!”

This time, he held the open dream longer, he inserted himself and took the time necessary to build a permanent link. When the connection snapped, he gently caressed the reed-flute that lay next to him on the table and started to plan their next meeting. Now he had time.
Picking up his flute, he began to play a merry tune as he stared at the wooden figure and imagined it springing into life! After a moment, he paused as a single tear of joy flowed from his right eye. With his right index finger, he took the big drop and used the moisture to form three hieroglyphic characters that shaped an ancient Elfkin proverb.

“A few of the rebel leaders, on this planet, remember us from the past… but they are not the same; they are soft now, no longer hungry!” Ramas shook his head. “Be careful… don’t trust anyone too much, if you must trust someone, trust the troops of the Ranian general, Ragnar ‘Strong Arms’.”
Garith nodded his head in agreement as he carefully surveyed the members of his rebel strike force. They wanted to appear on the planet as hard-core military leaders… ‘bouncing in’ wearing vision goggles did not create the image they sought. The team needed to inspire confidence.
“Remember, you need to restore their confidence in us… a big part will be in the initial impression you make on their leaders. He paused briefly for effect. “Put on your best battle faces, puff up your chests… disguise your fair natures with controlled fury, and act as the leaders we’ve trained you to be!”
“Except for you!” Garith pointed directly at Ala. “Remember, you are pretending to be deathly sick and need to be immediately transported to a safe place to rest.”
Even in the darkness of the chamber, Garith could sense the cold stare Ala gave him. She was not her nature to be weak or timid.
“There is nothing else Ramas, and I can teach you in preparation for this challenge… our chances of success will depend more on your brains rather than your swords.” Garith panned a slow, hard-eyed, look across the team, then shaped a small smile. “Remember, all you have to do is defeat a minor God!”

Author Bio:
Byron Fortin is a North American author of fantasy, suspense, and supernatural fiction. His background consists of studies in classical literature, theatre, and romantic poetry. Byron also holds degrees in both healthcare and electronic engineering, with a great interest in the future of alternative energies and a passion for the natural sciences. In 2012 he received the Diamond Century of Service Challenge Award for volunteer services. Byron resides in the beautiful Peggy’s Cove area.
