It all started in Colorado where he was born, raised, and educated. He received B.S. degrees in Engineering, and Business, adding an M.S in Engineering while living in Connecticut. He went on to become a professional consulting engineer.
Along the way, he wrote numerous articles read around the world. They all dealt with real world technical issues involving turbomachinery. They included a series of articles titled, “Confessions of an Aerodynamicist.” (Not exactly your normal boring title for a technical article.) The experience and the lessons learned along the way of problem solving and dealing with people served as the main course of his buffet of treats of life’s journey. He learned that solving complex issues requires more than a detailed technical understanding. It requires the ability to work with other people and to let each member of the team contribute in their unique way toward the success of the entire project.
Upon retiring from engineering, he was ready for the next course in the buffet of life’s experiences. He turned his creativity and problem-solving skills to inventing and producing a series of wood products. First, he had to teach himself woodworking. Not an easy task for someone with no background in woodworking, and by nature tended to be awkward and clumsy. However, after several years of learning through wood working courses, instructional books, buying good tools, and…practice, practice, and more practice. He thought he was ready for the next step to actually start making some of his wood working projects.
After producing the first protype, he stood back and looked at it. It looked like and amateur made it. An amateur had. He burned the wood prototypes during at a campfire one evening. More practice followed. (Patience and failure were something he had learned as an engineer. They really were needed at this phase.)
Finally, he was ready to start actually making some of the ideas he had been imagining during numerous sleepless nights. He could now start making some of his new wood products.
In the years that followed, he was able to manufacture and sell some these wood products. They included “The Magic Wine Table”, (Patented 1999). “The Mystery Wine Cage”, “The Guzzle Puzzle” (see a trend here?), and the “Dual View: Name/Date Block.”
All the new products had three things in common. (1) They had to be made of wood. (2) they had to be based on a brand-new idea or concept, and most importantly, (3) they must promote social interaction.
This process of designing, making, and selling these new products, was his dessert in his buffet of life’s experiences.
It was time for something different. Time to shift gears and move on. His focus shifted more to family and friends, in sharing in each other’s experiences and opinions.
It was during many of these conversations that the idea of writing a book evolved.
Others were especially curious about how he approached life with such a positive outlook. They were especially interested about some of the tools and techniques he had developed to modify this thinking. They wanted to learn how he had transformed into a more joyful and giving person, someone who truly celebrates life and those around him. They started taking notes during the conversations, and gradually started encouraging him to document the ideas of the conversations into a book.
And that is how it came about that he wrote “The Outlook of a Happy Fella.”
The book and the support of family and friends served as an after- dinner drink in his buffet of joyful experiences. It was like sitting on the patio with a glass of cognac, remembering, reflecting, and smiling…. always smiling.
