Mark wrote his first twelve pages at the age of ten, complete with drawings of a prairie fire, Indians, and a stampede. He is the author of The Scepter and Tower Trilogy, an epic high fantasy adventure series for young adults (and adults) set in a Celtic world that’s not quite a mirror of earth. Through Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas, he’s also published two novels of Christian historical fiction set in ancient Celtic Ireland at the time of St. Patrick.

At various times, Mark has welded rails for the railroad, inspected glass in a glass factory, given aid checks to welfare clients, and programmed micro-code for IBM. He recently helped plant a church where he still volunteers. He and his wife enjoy traveling with recent visits to Japan, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Ireland, France, Italy, and Switzerland. Mark spends most of his time at his desk writing, working for his church, or following his miniature Australian shepherd through the neighborhood. She insists on dragging her master from his desk at least three times a day.

When I was a child, I had 11 classes at school in the village of Chuchkovo, which, sadly, doesn’t exist anymore. I then went into the army and thought I would become a security guard right after. Humble life experiences, am I right? My life had been nothing special up until that point. It had been pretty ordinary. But because I read so much as a child, my love for storytelling began to grow. I have a degree in Humanities with Literature and have always enjoyed reading, especially the great writers of the 19th Century, such as Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy. A great deal of my working life has been spent teaching English and maths to young people in the workplace. Nowadays I find myself trying to pass on my love of the classics to people who were born in the 21st Century. It’s a hard task but if I can impart even the tiniest bit of enthusiasm, then I’ll feel I have achieved something.

I have done many different jobs in my working life, from nursing to shelf filling and everything in-between! Having lived long enough now, I realise that life very rarely goes to plan.

Being the only child of two only children, I have always felt a distinct lack of family. This led me to research my family history and what I found there fascinated me. The Glass Bulldog is my first novel but there is another one currently in progress, again based on the true stories of my ancestors. I feel the lives of ordinary people can be just as sad, funny, dramatic and interesting as anyone famous. We are all just struggling to survive.

My writing takes place anywhere and everywhere, even whilst sitting in the car. I find driving is a great way to free the mind and inspire the imagination, and I’ve often had to pull over in order to get stuff down on paper. I always write the first draft by hand, as I think better that way, then redraft and amend it as I type it up.

In my spare time, when I’m not writing, I enjoy spending time with my husband, our cats, rabbits and guinea pigs, listening to folk and world music, going to the cinema and trying to grow vegetables, with limited success!

Great ass, and a smart juicy brain too. She’s great to talk stories through with, and she’s always the first to read any of my shit.

So what lead me, Vaughn Ashby, to writing? Well, first I feel like we know each other my better now since the top of the page so you can call me Ash. Second, I’ve always loved stories. Since I was a little man I’ve been making up new stories with my toy Ghostbusters and Ninja Turtles. I learned a lot about plot, context and characters from watching movies that were way to old for me down in my parents basement late at night.

I have a secret to tell you. Well it’s not really a secret, I tell anyone who might read something i’ve written. I suck at spelling. I have always had a shit time of a putting the right letter together. From kindergarten to University i’m pretty sure my spelling didn’t improve much at all.
