An artist I know was working on an installment piece. One day he posted a still of his work in progress; a low angle of some hand crafted pine trees in a snowy landscape. You see, he’s a cardboard/paper artist and all of this was hand crafted and reminded me of the stop-motion Christmas TV Special, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

I immediately began thinking of an idea for a modern Christmas stop-motion film. Random ideas came to mind and a I began jotting down notes about things that might work. After a couple of days, I had an idea for these creatures that a made of darkness…shadows…that are trying to steal Christmas. I elaborated the idea and continued making notes and revising and outlining.

After a couple of weeks of this, I decided to start writing. I wrote and outlined and changed ideas and started all over again. Once I started really diving into writing I was nearly 20 pages in before I realized that I was writing a book. Since my original intention was to write for screen, I didn’t have a book in mind and hadn’t written for print before. This format and idea was all new, but liberating and much more freeing that writing for the screen!
