I loved being able to create that kind of impact with words. I believe a reader will leave a good story in an improved condition. He may have learned something new about the world or himself, or simply been well entertained. That's why I write.     Marc Daniel is the author of Shadow Pack, an urban fantasy novel and first book of the Michael Biörn series. After spending significant amount of time in Ohio, France, and Montana, Marc is currently living in Texas where he writes as a full time hobby. Marc developed a taste for mystery novels very young, and was definitely hooked to the genre by age 11 after reading Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. The Queen of Crime's unparalleled talent for mystery has had a strong influence on Marc’s desire to write and this is reflected in his novels. His taste for science fiction literature came a couple years later after stumbling upon The Dreaming Jewls by Theodore Sturgeon. Simak, Asimov, Van Vogt, Zimmer Bradley, Wells, Bradburry followed in short order. Marc was 18 when he read Frank Herbert’s Dune, his first space opera, and was immediately fascinated by the genre. He spent the next few years reading Space opera sagas almost exclusively (Herbert, Anderson, Bordage, etc) with the exception of the occasional Agatha Christie. He discovered fantasy much later at age 25 with Tolkien’s Lord Of The Rings trilogy. In the years following, his reading started gravitating more and more towards this literary style. Surprisingly enough, it took Marc another eight years to read his first urban fantasy, Patricia Brigg’s Moon Called, and to realize he wanted more. Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files series partially tamed his appetite but his thirst could only be quenched by writing his own series. A year later, Shadow Pack was born.     I am an author, screenwriter and film maker, my screen credits include the cult classic "Night Terror" (1990) and the soon to be released "Hunt For the Desert Apeman" in collaboration with M.L. Behrman. I published his first novel: "The Galley"(2012) and its' short story extract: "The Unthinkable (The Great Fire of Rome)"(2012). My newest books are "Timelines: The Beethoven Incident"(2013) and the first installment of "The Palindrome Chronicles": the short story "We Were Here!(2013)" In September my newest book, "Spooks" will be published. After spending my early years in the Midwest, I migrated to Southern California where I received most of my education. There is an old saying: "You can take the boy out of the farm, but you can't take the farm out of the boy." I think that's true in my case. Although I've lived in L.A. most of my life, the simple ways of Southern Illinois are still close to my heart. I love the opportunities to get away to the quiet of the deserts and countryside. It helps me think. My joys in life are playing the guitar and spending time with my grandchildren, (as well as writing!).

47. Birthday Cake Disaster by Ruth Whenham -

    My first book, 'My Crazy Purple Pen' was inspired by a leaving gift from my work colleagues when I left the NHS; a very smart purple pen (surprisingly enough!) and writer's notebook. Just a few days after leaving work, I sat down, opened up my notebook and began. I didn't have a plot in mind at the outset but everything seemed to flow almost by itself and by the end I was satisfied that I had included all the elements required for a good read; a character children could empathise with, humour at the expense of authority figures (which in my experience kids love), suspense and a small moral message thrown into the mix. I found an illustrator, Emma Hunt, who was able to bring the story to life in just the way I had envisioned. She has a unique style which I thinks fits perfectly with the fun and modern tone of the book. I collaborated again with Emma on my next book, 'The Day My Teacher Came to Tea'. I wanted to write a farce style story for children. Those stories in which one small mishap leads to another and another until the whole situation has spiralled out of control, have always appealed to me. I hope children will delight in seeing the boy's rather stern teacher becoming increasingly messy and bedraggled as the story unfolds. I like to add in a 'spot the .....' aspect to my stories. In this case there is a cheeky spider to be found. My latest book, a tale about a girl baking a cake with her Dad for her Mum's birthday tea, is my husband's favourite. I think this is probably due to the fact that it includes a recipe for pink party cake!
