  2. Being There -

T.K. Rapp was born and raised in Houston, Texas, and graduated from Texas A&M in 2000 with a degree in Journalism. It is here that she met her husband and another adventure began. During his seven year stint in the U.S. Navy, they moved to both east & west coasts, had children and learned what being married was all about. When his service was up, they were finally able to settle back down in Texas, where they live today. As a 35-year-old wife and mother, she has always had a love of all things creative, but her ability to do anything with her hands was laughable, at best. Give her a pen, she could journal or work up blue prints, but painting, sculpting, anything of that nature, it was a talent lost of her. Fortunately, her life-long dream was to write. This dream was realized with her debut novel, Being There. It is self-published book released in early July and was an absolute labor of love. Being There tells the story of Cass, and her journey to open herself up to what life hands her. TK is currently working on two more novels, one of which she hopes to publish late November. When she isn’t writing, or thinking up something to write, she can be found chatting on Facebook, reading, adding things to her bucket list or hanging with her family.

  8. Song of the Shaman by Annette Vendryes Leach -

Annette Vendryes Leach is a Brooklyn author who started out as a copywriter for an advertising agency. For years she wrote magazine, radio and TV ads for everything from beer and soda to fried chicken and cars — even the CIA. After winning industry awards and moving up the ladder to Creative Director, Annette decided it was time to write where her true passion lay – books. She began by founding the Black Literary Club (BLC), the first mail order book club devoted to African American, African and Caribbean literature. BLC’s success garnered attention in major newspapers and trade publications. Annette worked with a leading publishing company as a consultant for the development of a niche book club. A regular at several writers’ workshops in Brooklyn and Manhattan led her to publish a short story, TIMA AND THE QUETZALCOATL, in Voices of Brooklyn: Writings from the Women of Color Writers’ Workshop. Annette is a graduate of The New School where she majored in Creative Writing and Comparative Religion. She is currently working on a second novel. Annette lives in Brooklyn, NY, with her husband and two sons. Why I wrote this book: SONG OF THE SHAMAN was inspired by family stories. It sprang from two occurrences: 1) The mystical things my sons told me when they were very little about their past lives and where they were before they were born. Their striking stories led me to ponder questions of identity — who are we really, what does the knowledge of past lives bring to the present, and why? 2) I wrote this book as a tribute to my mother and grandmother. My grandmother was orphaned when her mother died in childbirth. My mother tried in vain to trace my grandmother’s origins in Panama. Her search turned up very few clues. I hardly knew my grandmother, but I always remember the empty look on her face, her far away eyes. I attributed that look to her lost ancestry. With the few facts I knew about my grandmother I began right then to create a story for her, as a way to give her a history. In the end, the process of weaving SONG OF THE SHAMAN’S historical love story with the contemporary single mother’s search for her origins transformed me as a writer and storyteller.

  13. Slush Pile Inspector by Charles Frankhauser -

Charles Frankhauser started writing novels about 15 years ago as an exercise to restore his typing skills. He spent hours sitting inside a bookstore reading about how to publish a novel by working with a literary agent. His efforts to obtain literary representation were unsuccessful during the era of paper manuscripts and paper query letters. When electronic mail arrived, his problems were solved because as an independent publisher work to entertain readers could finally “see the light of day.”

  15. The Great Leap Forward -

Armand Burke was born in the 1950s in a place whose name he does not care to remember. In his early twenties he found himself living in New York City and increasingly baffled by an obsession with China. At that time the Middle Kingdom was off-limits to Western travelers and in the midst of a political upheaval. After countless hours in the Far Eastern Collection of the New York Public Library, Burke realized that he would never find the truth about China in any of the usual places, least of all in China itself. Like Joseph Conrad describing a continent he had never visited, or Pierre Menard recreating Don Quixote word by word, he relocated his search, beyond outward appearances, to the deepest recesses of his own imagination. Sensing correctly that his discoveries in that chaotic region would be suppressed by the military/industrial/publishing complex, he wrote on the run—in an apartment in the Bronx, a basement in Colorado, a farmhouse in Vermont—while working as a bank messenger, an investigator and a storekeeper and reading the Illuminati trilogy. The result was The Great Leap Forward, which has been called “unequalled,” “unparalleled” and “extraordinary,” among other things. Today, except after a night of heavy drinking, he denies having written it. He lives on an island off the coast of Maine with two Siamese cats, three dogs, four pot-bellied pigs, and a Komodo dragon.

  38. Uncle Jeever’s Morbid Tales, Volume One -

At first, when asked what inspired him to write, Najeev Raj Nadarajah excitedly spoke of that one faithful winter day when he picked up a copy of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and fell in love with the fantasy genre. But upon further reflection, he wound back the clock to the autumn of 1991 when he was first introduced to Robert McConnell’s classic children’s book, Norbert Nipkin. With a lack of cable television and video games, Nadarajah turned to reading books and watching fantastical films as his pastime. If you’re looking for the spark that blossomed into what is now his love for writing and storytelling, look no further. For four long years, he worked on a manuscript to an epic fantasy novel called Helmdör, which he poured all of his free time and energy into. Countless rejections later, discouraged, and at the end of his line, he self-published and soon discarded the novel out of frustration knowing that he could do loads better. Failure after failure, mixed with years of ill-fortune soon led to many sleepless nights and countless bad dreams. It was while struggling to find his way through life, and while struggling to find an original idea that he found his way to the University of Toronto, St. George Campus in downtown Toronto where he landed a job as a security guard at Robarts Library. Two weeks later, woken by yet another nightmare, Nadarajah left behind the discomforts of his bed and made his way to work a few hours ahead of schedule to clear his mind of a post-apocalyptic vision. It was while walking about the streets of the campus that his original idea struck him as if it had always been harbouring in the back of his mind, waiting for the right moment to present itself. And that’s how Dream Caster came into existence. Within mere weeks, four novels were planned in the series, and Nadarajah has not looked back since. Nadarajah continues to live in Toronto, Ontario, and continues to work at the University of Toronto. He still lacks cable television, prefers books over video games, and still enjoys reading fantasy classics and watching movies with all forms of fantastical elements (and yes, he loves SciFi, too). When not reading and writing, Nadarajah plays hockey, plays with his cockatiels, and continues to go on random escapades that leaves others scratching their heads.

The second and third books in the series, "The Punishing Game," and "The Killer Sex Game," are also available on Amazon.com. I am currently working on book 4 in the series, "The Dead Reckoning Game." Harvey Araton of The New York Times said of "The Hurting Game:" "Nathan Gottlieb, who knows the fascinating behind-the-scenes world of professional athletes inside-out, takes us on a compelling and suspenseful trip into the underbelly of the glitzy Las Vegas strip in order to chase down the killer of a world champion boxer. Gottlieb's prose is as fast and firm as the stiffest jab, and his ending is simply lights-out. First-rate, fun and irreverent story telling."
