Smoking three packs-a-day for the prior five years, in early 1999 the pace at which my health was deteriorating fast. A 24-hour audible wheeze with every breath, chronic bronchitis, early emphysema, recurrent pneumonia, declining vision and a half dozen root canals, something had to give. After one final failed attempt, I fully surrendered to the fact that that I was a true drug addict in every sense, and would die an addict's death. Surprisingly, that was the most liberating moment of my life. To make a long story shorter, on May 15, 1999, with the help of online peer support, I reclaimed my life. On July 15, 1999, I started a website that I named WhyQuit.com. On January 20, 2000, Joel Spitzer stumbled upon the site and sent me an email. He'd taught smoking cessation full-time for over 30 years. For the next 14 years he'd serve as both my mentor and WhyQuit's education director. I've since presented more than 100 live clinics and seminars, and written countless cessation related articles, including five published in peer reviewed journals. I'm director of both Freedom, a Yuku based 6,500 member support group established in October 1999, and Turkeyville, Facebook's newest and possibly most popular quitting site, having added more than 2,000 members since May 2012 (take a peek: https://www.facebook.com/groups/whyquit/ ) Today, WhyQuit averages 13,857 page downloads and 95,423 server requests daily. Between May 13, 2012 and August 7, 2013, 1.126TB of data was downloaded and the site had 2,803,158 unique visitors. Although helping facilitate successful cessation is extremely rewarding emotionally, needless to say, on occasion my daily email volume is overwhelming.
