  17. Primed by G P Francis - 2013-05-12 02:41:47-04
I'm a British-born writer, artist and entrepreneur currently living in Vancouver, Canada with my wife and three daughters after emmigrating in 2003. Hobbies and interests include electronics projects, mountain climbing, parkour, meditation, snowboarding, invention and design, taiko drumming, ukiyo-e, martial arts, singing and playing guitar. My first published short story, Vigi-Santees, is a darkly-comedic thriller in epistolary form, a tribute to and emulation of the styles of H P Lovecraft and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I wrote it for an anthology entitled Ain't No Sanity Clause, by UK publisher Fringeworks in December 2012, which is also available for purchase through Amazon. I'm a fan of Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams, although humour rarely emerges in my own work. Literary influences include Philip K Dick, J R R Tolkien and William Gibson. I'm currently working on audiobook and screenplay adaptations of Primed, coming to headphones and cinemas near you! I also have a number of other story concepts to flesh out, ranging from an alternate late middle ages 'da Vinci-punk' story about a shinobi sent to Europe's last pagan kingdom (Lithuania - you learn something new every day) disguised as the king's Court Jester, with the tongue-in-cheek working title Harlequinja, through an urban fantasy setting where a cop wrestles with her own world-view as the witness she's assigned to protect draws her into a world of magick, to further exploration of the Orion's Spur milieu which forms the setting of Primed. I'm certainly open to your suggestions as to which to pursue more avidly. Let me know through my website Contact page.

  23. Water’s End: A Love Rediscovered by Jessica Deforest - 2013-05-12 07:16:06-04
A Kansas native, Jessica Deforest is a former military wife. A prolific writer even as a child, she submitted essays to a children's page in her local newspaper, often winning prizes such as free movie tickets or a gallon of ice cream. "My mom was a widow," she said, "and we had a tough time financially. When I won the ice cream, it was the first time we ever had a whole gallon of ice cream in our house. That's what planted the idea that writing could be more than just fun. It's no wonder I ended up writing and editing for a living." Jessica's first published poem appeared in a national student anthology when she was a high school senior. Since then she has had several poems published in small magazines. Going back to school in her mid-forties, she worked her way through college by starting a word-processing business and taking on ghostwriting assignments. Writing and editing everything from travel and safety publications to international newsletters and press releases, Jessica loves variety and a challenge. So, in 1994, she completed her first novel, but she didn't have time to do anything with it for another seven years. Finally, in September, 2011, she boxed up 10 manuscripts and sent them off to publishers in New York. Later that month all her packages were returned in the wake of 9-11 with the notation, "We are not accepting unsolicited manuscripts at this time." Relegating the book to a lower priority, she concentrated on her other goal of earning a master's degree in counseling psychology. For her practicum, she worked in two women's homeless shelters, and she did her internship at a women's drug/alcohol rehabilitation center. During that time, she discovered that many women are homeless because of abusive domestic relationships or addiction to prescription painkillers, which sparked her interest in women's stress-related health issues. After graduation, she embarked on a doctoral program in health psychology, narrowing her focus to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in women. A recipient of two Educational Press Association of America Distinguished Achievement awards for editing, Jessica says studying with the late Sloan Wilson influenced her the most. Wilson wrote the bestselling The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, A Summer Place, and a dozen other novels. Her professional background includes working as an associate editor and staff writer/editor for several large corporations. As a corporate writer/editor, she has edited and wrote international publications and has written policies and procedures, PR copy, and newsletters. In addition, as a freelancer, she has worked on government training materials for a defense contractor, edited books and textbooks, and copyedited more than ten books for a local author.
