About Silent Storm

The Silent Storm Academy, renowned as the pinnacle of academic excellence, and a safe haven for those born with the Altered Gene, known as Altere. However, in the Academy’s long history, there have never been two Principals at the helm, but the destinies of Marie Stanislaus and Vanessa Terrell have always been inexplicably intertwined.

From a bloody race war between their respective nations and households, ended only on paper, to their falling in love with Dorian Marx, a man who, with the help of Cordelia, an evil witch, deceived them both, and almost destroyed the Academy, killing their friends and family in the process. A horrid deception proving to be the catalyst for the forging of an unbreakable bond between the two, who are forced to kill the man they love, and father to their unborn sons, Jason and Riley. Despite the terrible losses suffered, and the shame of carrying bastard children for a murderous psychopath, Marie and Vanessa soldier on and jointly assume the helm of the Academy, embarking on a lengthy process of rebuilding and modernization, much to the ire of Marie’s aging father, Ike Stanislaus, who still clings to the old bigoted ways of the past.

18 years on, Marie and Vanessa now find themselves summoned to a gathering of the Council of Allied Nations, to publicly answer for the unsolved kidnappings of newly awakened Altere. Calls are made for the assignment of joint leadership of the Academy to the Central Defense Force, headed by the crooked General Kross, in the absence of immediate improvements; an ultimatum which could finally prove to be the pair’s undoing as Cordelia shows her hand, revealing her involvement in the kidnappings, while also promising to unite their sons with their long-lost father.

As Marie and Vanessa begin to question themselves, horrified by the idea of their former lover still being alive, the public’s faith in the Silent Storm dwindles, and Cordelia grows more confident, inching ever closer to the realization of a diabolical plot.

STAN THE MANGRIFFIN Was born in Middletown, Ohio, a small Midwestern town 35 miles north of Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the eleventh child of siblings, the son of a Preacher. The Reverend Felton Griffin Sr. and mother Annie Bea Griffin. Stan grew up in a musical family, most of his brothers and sisters played musical instruments. By the time Stan was fifteen years old, he had become an accomplished musician himself. Learning to play the saxophone at an early age by the time he had reached his teenage years he was already performing in nightclubs with the area local Pop R&B Jazz bands. After high school, Stan moved to California, where he continued to hone his skills in entertaining in the music world and became more known as a lead singer in what we come to know today as boy bands. Opening for such musical acts as the Manhattan’s and Regina Bell. While grooming his musical chops, Stan decided to move back to Ohio, where he recorded his first Contemporary Gospel CD “As One.” He soon followed up his second Contemporary Gospel CD “Wise Men Still Seek Him.” Growing up Stan had already developed his taste for Pop R&B listening to Motown. So, Stan begins writing and recording his first Pop R&B CD demo and turns it into a full-blown CD in which he titled “A Breath of Fresh Air”. Stan followed Fresh Air up with “Spider-Dance, The Spider-Man Theme Song” a brand new tribute to web-slinging Super Hero.

Colin Knight was born in Manchester, England to working class parents – his father painted houses and drove delivery trucks; his mother worked in a retirement home. He and his four siblings shared a small three-bedroom house on an unremarkable city owned housing estate ten miles from the city center. From seven to sixteen years old, he held newspaper and milk delivery jobs, which he did, before school.

Educated to state standards, at an experimental public high school for boys, Colin graduated at sixteen with minimum credentials. At eighteen, he joined an American international company as a general office helper. By twenty-three Colin had developed an aptitude for product management and marketing. His career with the American company provided work assignments in Italy and Switzerland, as well as travel to many European countries.

In 1987, Colin immigrated to Canada to work for a distributor of the American company. In 1991, he took a chance and quit work to attend university. By 1997, Colin had obtained a BA Honors Degree in Political Science, and a MA Degree in International Relations.

In 1999, after a brief return to the private sector, Colin joined the Canadian Federal Government. During his fifteen-year government career, Colin worked for the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Canadian International Development Agency, the Public Safety Department, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and most recently, he was a Senior Policy Analyst in the Federal Privy Council Office. Government work and assignments took Colin to Europe, Asia, Latin America and the US. Colin retired from the government in 2014 to focus on family, writing and life.

STAN THE MANGRIFFIN Was born in Middletown, Ohio, a small Midwestern town 35 miles north of Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the eleventh child of siblings, the son of a Preacher. Bruce Blake lives on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. When pressing issues like shovelling snow and building igloos don’t take up his spare time, Bruce can be found taking the dog sled to the nearest coffee shop to work on his short stories and novels.

About True Tales of a Traveller Volume Two: Culture Shock & Other Stories

The book begins in late 1984 with the sixth tale in the series overall, Culture Shock. This story finds the young traveller (myself) taken from the relative orderliness of a life in London where he had been attempting, with mixed results, to pursue a career in travel (related in the fifth story of the series, A Career in Travel), and throws him into the furious assault on the senses that constituted life in the Indian capital, Delhi, at that time.

His attempt to integrate his love for travel into a regular, settled lifestyle in London had already begun to unravel even before he left the UK. After only a couple of weeks in India, his career as a travel industry employee has slipped into the past, replaced by an even more vivid and overpowering version of his pre-existing career as a full-time traveller.

The second story of this volume, Just A Businessman is set in India-administered Kashmir. At nearly 17,000 words, this account constitutes a lengthy short story which may need more than one sitting to read. In addition to being a travel story, Just A Businessman is also a story about religious and ethnic conflict and political upheavals, and the extents to which these can affect the life of a traveller, or an outsider.

At first, I was reluctant to include this story in the series, for fear of possibly incriminating people who may have violated local laws of the time, but have since learnt that such consequences are no longer possible, and the story can now be told without fear of consequences.

Overlanding (Part One) is the third story in this volume, and at over 46,000 words the longest story of the series so far, for one of the shortest periods of actual travel.

Of all my travels in the 1980s, in terms of time spent, undoubtably no journey made such a deep and lasting impression on me as this overland trip from Karachi to Rotterdam. Not only did it unceremoniously blow away many of my own preconceived notions of life in Pakistan and Iran, it was also a harsh lesson for me as a traveller in the virtues of being prepared for any journey into terra incognita. Additionally, the first part of the journey, from Karachi to the Turkish border with Iran, was relatively dangerous, not due to involving difficult terrain, but rather to man-made hazards. But overall, the journey turned out to be something I originally had never suspected for a moment it would be: an intensive course in the follies of racial prejudice and ethnic chauvinism.
