I ran barefoot on the Canadian prairies in the dust that settled after the 2nd World War. That makes me an octogenarian, an oldie.

Thrust from the infinity of wheat fields into the warp of the Rockies, Selkirk and Purcell mountains, the light that defined a frightful, but interesting, high school life challenged me.

Our neighbors were all Italian—migrants to Canadian mining towns. With his Welsh-born farmers’ busyness, my father found strange their art of dolce far niente—that is, the sweetness of doing nothing. They practised it, “Come in. Come in. Sit down. Taste my homemade vino.” Our family adapted.

And the flames of railway trestles burning and women parading nude colored life. Doukhobors (a sect that had fled persecution in Russia) settled in the Kootenays. They protested having to send their children to public schools.

Wearing a babushka and twirling spaghetti, not only did I survive those years, but I thrived.

Vancouver, the “big city,” where I discovered traffic lights and city buses, claimed me for medical lab training, and I worked the night shift in the blood bank to put myself through university.

I’ve worked in cancer research, taught at tech schools, become a registered massage therapist, taken up energy schooling in NY., married and raised two kids, and, at 73, published my first book A Many Layered Skirt, a biography about a young Chinese girl trying to keep one frightening step ahead of the soldiers, during the Japanese occupation.

My husband, of 56 years, was Chinese. Our mixed marriage was intriguing, and happiness was ours. Interests in people, cultures and places took us around the world. Many of those adventures find their way into my writing. He passed away, throwing my life into chaos. Now, I’ve picked up the pen, again, and have written four books in the Love is Forever Series, a historical fiction, The Inspector’s Daughter and the Maid and Shifting to Freedom, a literary, partly autofiction, based on a professional woman who has multiple-personality disorder. – I really liked using Wordperfect and will never really acclimatize to Word entirely. Google Docs is good. I wanted to get a fancy writing keyboard but turns out the low-travel Surface Laptop 2 keyboard is fine for pounding out 100k words. I first wrote stories about me and my friends having cool magic powers and doing rad things, and then I moved onto Pokemon Fan Fiction because clearly I was the coolest kid in my class.
– A snake fell onto my shoulder when I was cottaging. I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. The odds of a snake going into a tree, then falling, and right onto my shoulder on an island. Since then (and also possibly before?) I dislike small animals that can move fast. I mean, they could come right at you before you even notice! My girlfriend made fun of me when I moved cautiously around a garter snake. Also, ever since reading 1984, mice and rats are the worst.

– I loved reading Haruki Murakami when I was in my teens and early twenties. I still read Norwegian Wood once every couple years, probably my favourite book ever. I get the criticism that’s been leveled against his writing of female characters in recent years, but it’s something hard to rationalize compared to my own dissatisfaction and melancholy that his writing drew out in me.
– I feel like every story should end with the fate of the universe at stake. Just a hot take to leave you with.
– My dream as a kid was to be a writer. Well, first, it was to be a lawyer in Grade 1. Then writer for the most of the rest of my childhood. Then lawyer again when I believed money was a cool thing. Then back to writer when I tried taking law classes in university. Kind of disparate, looking back at it. Lawyer? Ugh.

– All of this was possible because of my loving family. Also the blog’s namesake dog.

About Tipu Finds Magic

Tipu Finds Magic is a fantastical story about a 21 year old college boy from Lahore. In the midst of a life of boredom and monotony, Tipu finds a gnome and ends up following him into the flip side of our world. There he unwittingly stirs up a revolution to end the tyrannical dictatorship of the rulers (vampires) and start an era of democracy.
The ‘Other Side’, as it is called in the novel, is a place where vampires, wizards, gnomes, and werewolves all live together. The particular country the protagonist goes to is called Naystaf. It is a fantastical place, although not a happy one. Different roles have been assigned to different species. Vampires are the authoritarian rulers. The head of state is a vampire named Sarkaar. Wizards form the admin. Werewolves are the night guards, and gnomes the labour. Jinns and Churails are known to be wild, untamed beasts which have been captured by the rulers and are kept caged. Furthermore, there are caretakers all across the Other Side who are supreme conciliators in time of conflict. Naystaf falls under the jurisdiction of Malika who is also known as the Lady Who Wears The World.
Tipu meets Nomi at a secluded corner of one of his university ground and, bored of his life on this side of the planet, follows him back to his world. He only realizes the severity of his actions when he finds himself facing imminent execution at the hands of the fascist government. The only way to overthrow the government is to appeal to Malika. As a last resort, Tipu and some friends gear up to take a long and hard journey through a forest and a mountain on both of which they encounter deadly monsters.
The group of adventurers includes Tipu, a wizard (Nazim), a witch (Farishta), and three gnomes (Nomi, Bibi, and Pappu). They all become friends on this journey and learn things from each other. One night they even visit the human world and Tipu finds his chance to acquaint them with his side. The conversations they have and the things Tipu learns from them makes this a coming of age novel of sorts, even though unlike most YA novels, the protagonist is not a high schooler but a college student.
In the end, they reach their destination. Malika summons Sarkaar and sets things right. Naystaf is a democratic country now. Shahi, a witch, is appointed the Senior Minister by the people’s vote. She gives Tipu a magical pin as a reward. It has the power to summon anyone from the magical side at any time. Tipu returns home.
The novel is relevant as a comment/point of view on how the boundaries of myths, folklore, and imagined worlds are blurred when speaking from a globalized and postcolonial standpoint. It is hoped that the novel will serve two purposes: First is the instigation of discussion on the hybrid subconscious and imagination of the postcolonial subject. The second hoped-for purpose is the story providing an amusing reading experience to any young adults in a state of ennui looking to suspend disbelief and enjoy an easy escape.

Sue Doe is a fiction writer from South Asia. She has published audio stories, animated stories, video stories, as well as written stories in the last five years, which probably still live on somewhere in the void that is the internet. Most recently she published her debut Fantasy novel Tipu Finds Magic. It is an east meets west coming of age story that follows a Pakistani college student as he navigates a whole new world.
