It begins with inappropriate flirting but before she can realize the extent of what is occurring, he goes too far, and it is too late for her to escape. He has snared her in his spider web, manipulating her and winning over her compassion and attraction.

It seems idyllic at first, but their love affair is just part of Drake’s chilling and malicious plan. His modus operandi is to charm wealthy patients, steal from them and ultimately wrap up any loose ends. This has fatal implications, and Mary must realise what is going on, pierce through the veil he has placed over her eyes, to have a chance at surviving.

Through the novel, readers can relate to the experience of living with a psychopath. It gives a sobering glimpse of the inner workings of psychopathy, how Doctor Bates think and operate, and his disregard for Mary’s’ experiences.

“That’s a negative, hombre,” shouted Quint. “I’m fresh out of lighter fluid over here.” He quickly added: “Jesse! Get over here!”

“No!” I barked. “Belay that order! Keep up your barrage …”

And I was on my way, bounding for Quint and holding up my lighter, shaking it, impatiently, as he turned and just stared at it—disoriented, shell-shocked. (Some of my rockets had—after ricocheting about wildly—blown up right next to him.)

“Take it!” I snapped—even as a ghost-white snout lunged at him through the window, lunged at him and crashed to a halt—snarling, gnashing its teeth; at which Quint spun upon it and clocked it in the nose, hard, and just kept clocking—until it yelped and beat a retreat.

“Okay,” I said, “go, go, go!” And he took the lighter.

And then I could only return to the Talon and snatch it up off the floor, noting its fading color, its waning strength, before swinging it around my head and barking, “There’s never going to be a better time. How much more?”

“Just about,” said Jesse, and continued: “Just—okay! Okay, I’m clear!”

I looked at Quint, who was still lighting. “All right, forget it, let ‘em go …”

He moved the lighter from one fuse to the next. “Hold on,” he said, “just hold on …”

At which we could only watch, rocking on our feet, hopping up and down, until he lit the last fuse and jumped down from the bucket.

And then we were hustling—double-timing it, as they say—up the stairs and out of the diner, where not a single predator could be seen. Then we were scrambling for our bikes; our pinto horses of plastic and steel; which gleamed like salvation even as the long-fused rockets began to explode and the Nano-As, active but in hiding, began to whimper and howl.

That’s when I knew it; when I could feel it in my bones. That we’d passed our first test; survived our baptism by fire. That’s when I knew that our journey would be complete—as we sat on our bikes with our spears canted at our backs (like the bows of Indian braves, I fancied) and, having returned the Talon to its canister, watched the last of the fireworks as they burst and boomed above. Watched, brooding, as they turned the sky first white then green then blue, and finally, a deep, lingering red, after which, taking a cue from our fellow animals, we began to howl ourselves.

Our story opens on a Saturday evening as Sonya Brown receives a call from her boss, Chester Guthrie, that he wants a stock count at the hardware that Sunday. She begins to worry because she doesn’t know if he is on to her fraudulent activities. This has enabled her to buy an apartment and have three taxis on the road, plus several other investments. Her on again, off again boyfriend, Mickie asks if she wants to put out a hit on him like the one they did on a former enployee, Judy Binns, who was snooping around. She refuses to order his killing and reminded him that all she told him to do to Judy was to warn her.
She gets a shock the next morning when she arrives at work to find Chester’s car riddled with bullet holes, and then to learn that he was on his way to hospital mortally wounded.
After talking to most of her colleagues, that morning she returns home to find her gun missing and that Mickie has been into one of of her bank accounts.
Chester’s wife, Delta takes over and appointed a new manager.
Delta accuses her of stealing millions and bring in auditors to probe the fraud. Delta fires her. She has to give up her apartment, two of her taxis plus cash to settle with her. Some of her relatives who know Delta had appealed to her for leniency.
In the meantime the police have reopened the Judy Binns hit and run accident. It is now a murder enquiry. The Binns family hire their own investigator to probe the case. Delta also hires her own investigator.
A prisoner has come forward to say that a fellow prisoner had confessed to the murder of Chester and Judy. This prisoner was in on a minor charge, but shortyly after his release he was shot dead in a robbery attempt. Sonya has been questioned about her role in both murders. She was actually arrested for Chester’s murder, but was released for a lack of evidence. Delta was also held for Chesters murder, but was released for a lack of evidence. The police were relying on Mickie, Sonya ex-boyfriend, but he proved very unreliable. Meanwhile Sonya is selling out of the back of her car. In her new role she had to deal with touts, scammers and extortionists. Even some of Chester secret woman said they have photgraphs of him and her. Delta has vowed that if she finds out that she was sleeping with him she will have the police arrest her for fraud. The police believe that the will soon solve the case as a more reliable witness has come forward. This man claims to have witnessed Carlos being paid to commit the murders. He also said that Mickie was in on the deals.
