I began making up stories in my head as a child to help me fall asleep. I sang with Elvis, rode the range with John Wayne, drove the car on vacations with my brother when my feet wouldn’t even touch the pedals, and had many other exciting adventures. I began telling my stories to a friend when, on a long road trip to the southern United States, my traveling companion said, “Jen, tell me one of your stories.” I had never shared my tales with another, however, she was a trusted confidante. My storytelling continued with my children, and helped that friend through chemotherapy, giving me the confidence to eventually write my stories on paper.

I have been teaching for over 20 years. When the whole world went under quarantine, teaching became undiscovered territory. The inspiration for “When The World Was Sick” was discussions with students when communication was conducted virtually with no physical contact. The challenge to create lessons which motivated and kept them engaged was a daily task.

Science has been one of my favorite subjects to teach for many years. I enjoy seeing students when they are engrossed in hands-on learning activities. In this book, a student has become discouraged about education and then a science assignment reignites the joy of learning.
