Greg Hickey started writing his first novel the summer after he finished seventh grade. He didn’t get very far because he quickly realized he preferred playing outside with his friends.

Eight years later, he began to find a better balance between writing and life. He wrote the early drafts of his first screenplay Vita during his last two years of college. Vita went on to win an Honorable Mention award in the 2010 Los Angeles Movie Awards script competition and was named a finalist in the 2011 Sacramento International Film Festival.

My book deals with my experiences during and since my heart attack on October 14, 2008. As a retired United States Air Force pilot and Lieutenant Colonel and a 28 year major airline Captain, the career ending event led to redefining my life at the age of 56 years with at least nine more years left until mandatory commercial pilot retirement at age 65, a career do-over if you will.
On a fateful October day, a healthy every six month FAA Class I certified medically qualified airline captain went out on mountain bike to climb a trail aptly named “It’s A Bitch”. My 3-4 workouts per week never portended a massive heart attack might occur during a planned 1-2 hour ride.
About 2/3’s of the way up the climb, out of breath and in need of a short rest, I sat down on a moss covered log and then lay supine losing consciousness. But for a couple of passing hikers, I may never have survived. Immediately dialing 9-1-1, the first responders arrived as quickly as possible considering the terrain and remote location. The 500 foot climb from the emergency vehicle with some 100 lbs. of equipment each is a testament to the EMT’s supernatural powers and endurance. From the EMT’s arrival and through the first few minutes in the hospital ER, I received some 45+ CPR shocks to revive my heart. The recovery and rehab took several months, but unhappily, I would never fly again.
There is a saying, “if you love your job, you will never work a day in your life”. I loved my job of 38 years and people would understand if I never recovered mentally from being wrenched from a career most would envy. My story revolves on all the attempts to remake my life and my career into something more meaningful than a slow drive to “Geezerville” to sit in a Barcalounger with a TV remote in one hand and a cool drink in the other.
Ranging from volunteer work at an “at-risk” student aviation based school, the head of Flight Standards at now defunct non-schedule worldwide cargo carrier, the head of Flight Training at a larger regional carrier to a worldwide consulting and aviation safety auditor traveling to Kenya, Philippines and Cape Verde, again and again I searched for the elusive “if you love your job” position searching for my new “why”, new “purpose”.
The search led me to motivational/keynote speaking, high school substitute teacher and high school baseball coach. My goal is making a difference and providing a short-cut for those with similar experiences.

Her mummum was the only one who understood her growing up. At a young age Mummum thought her the finer points of being a proper Norwegian house wife and witchcraft. All of this was done in secret. Her childhood was split between New Jersey and California as her mummum fell ill.

Al and Sunny Lockwood have traveled by foot, car, rail, air and cruise ship. They’ve camped in national parks, hiked mountain trails, photographed springtime flowers in Death Valley and wintry surf along the rugged beaches of Northern California.

They’ve watched July 4th fireworks over Lake Tahoe, explored the Taos Pueblo and ridden the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad through forests ablaze with autumn colors.

They’ve ridden the amazing Falkirk Wheel in Scotland, the Flam Railway in Norway and Ushuaia’s train at the end of the world.

They’ve photographed Gibraltare’s Barbary apes and Gentoo Penguins frolicking in the surf on Falkland Island beaches.

From North Carolina’s Outer Banks to New Orleans’ Bourbon Street and Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, Al and Sunny love to wander and wonder and enjoy.

Everywhere they go, they capture unforgettable moments with their cameras and notebooks, moments to share with their readers. Their work has been published in magazines and newspapers. It has been recognized with awards from the National Federation of Press Women, the California Newspaper Publishers Association, the Wishing Shelf Book Awards, Seven Sisters Book Awards, and The Independent Author Network Book Awards.

Author Bio:
Darlene Foster is a Canadian author who has written the popular Amanda Travels series, featuring a spunky twelve-year-old who loves to travel to unique places where she encounters mystery and adventure while learning about another culture. Readers of all ages enjoy travelling with Amanda as she unravels one mystery after another in various countries. Darlene has won prizes for her short stories and a number of them have been published in anthologies. She has also written a bi-lingual book for English/Spanish readers.

Darlene grew up on a farm/ranch near Medicine Hat, Alberta, where her love of reading inspired her to travel the world and write stories. Over the years she held wonderful jobs such as an employment counsellor, ESL teacher, recruiter, and retail manager, and wrote whenever she had a few spare minutes. She is now retired and has a home in Spain where she writes full time. When not travelling, meeting interesting people, and collecting ideas for her books, she likes to spend time with her husband and entertaining dog, Dot.
