They Call Me Retard is a heartwarming novel about a girl who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. When Joey Parkins was only a few months old, she was also misdiagnosed with mental retardation. She grew up with overprotective parents who placed her in a school for children with severe disabilities. Here she spent her days doing children’s crafts and the very basics of normal school subjects like reading and arithmetic.
She had to teach herself to read with the help of games that her sister brought home. She also taught herself to paint simple pictures with the help of a concoction that her father dreamed up. She was a lonely child. She had a difficult time making friends with the children in her classroom who had severe mental and physical disabilities. And the other children in school made fun of her and bullied her for the way she looked.
When she grew up, her parents placed her in a group home where she was forced to spend the rest of her life with people with much more severe disabilities than hers. However, she managed to make friends with two of her peers who grew up with abusive parents. She also develops a friendship with one of her staff who watches over the home.
Together, they grow and reach beyond the shackles of prejudice and injustice that have kept them imprisoned for so many years. They face the horrors of a suicide in the home, visiting parents that are abusive to the people who live in the home and staff who treat them as though they have no feelings and no minds of their own.

Beth Madden, born in Brisbane, Australia, knew from age eight that she was meant to write. She is in the process of writing several fantasy novels which she aspires to publish both in print and electronically. Under the Bright Water is Book 2 of her Treading Twisted Lines series. Together with Books 1 and 3 (The Chosen Voice and The Rat), it was originally released in 2012. With Suddenly Calling’s publication (Book 4) on 16 July 2015 drawing near (it took long enough …), she hopes to share the entire Treading Twisted Lines series with many new and lovely readers.
Studying at university from 2006, Beth received her Bachelors of Science and Arts in 2009, majoring in biomedical science, psychology, and Japanese. From mid-2010 until mid-2012, she worked in Kyoto, Japan, as an assistant English teacher. Her experiences there lent to the conception of the Treading Twisted Lines series, and continue to influence much of her writing.
A music enthusiast, Beth sings soprano in the Queensland University Musical Society. She also plays piano, and has played cello, guitar, and attempted clarinet in the past. Her favourite sport is swimming (she’s not fast, but has fair technique), her first favourite band is adult alternative group My Friend the Chocolate Cake (she grew up listening to them—they make just gorgeous music), and, if given a choice Beth would most likely choose dragonflies over butterflies. This said, she quite likes butterflies as well, and has nothing whatsoever against butterflies or people who favour butterflies over dragonflies.

I’ve been an avid reader of all manner of books all of my life, but my main interest has always been with fantasy fiction. I recall looking at a Batman comic when I was 4. I was fascinated by the artwork and the character, but frustrated and annoyed because I couldn’t read then, and I didn’t know what was going on in the comic. However once I started reading, I devoured comics and lived in an imaginary world where I was also a superhero. Although my adult life never lived up to my childhood ambition.
I was ten when I first read “Lord of The Rings”, and I’ve been hooked on fantasy worlds and characters ever since. My greatest wish was to have the ability to write similar stories, unfortunately I am no Tolkien, but then again, who is.
I have worked as a freelance writer for trade magazines for a number of years, and yes, it’s boring as it sounds. I finally took the plunge to write my own book back in 2013. I had all the doubts and anxiety that I suppose any new writer goes through. But I bit the bullet and started a book based on a character which has lived in my imagination for many years.
Over the years I have had a number of interests, but I have to admit my hobbies are something that I do extremely badly. From almost burning my kitchen when trying to cook a something more adventurous than throwing a pizza in a microwave, to virtualy flooding my room when nailing a floorboard and hitting a main central heating pipe. I spend a lot of my life coping with mishaps of my own making, but I try to stay positive. I think I’ve embarrassed myself enough for today.

I grew up enjoying math and avoiding English. Unless it was required, even in college, I ran from every English/literature class I could. English had too many rules, and even more exceptions to every rule. I did however, have a natural curiosity for words and what they mean. After all, I must use words to communicate and I want to be understood.
My mind is structured mechanically, and I naturally fixed things around the house. My mom learned this when I was young and would always throw projects at me to fix. I enjoyed seeing broken things work again. In college, I majored in mathematics and minored in mechanical engineering. It was a natural choice. As my career developed into management, I realized I had a gift for understanding business, seeing a problem and leading people to the solution. I began to experiment with my leadership philosophies and studying business and the psychology of leading people. The result… success.
My friends, and former co-workers would tell me horrible story after another about the horrific bosses they had, after many years I decided to do something about it. I started writing as therapy to express my anger toward these bad managers out there in the workforce who dominate their employees. It is completely unnecessary and counter-productive.
Now, to my surprise, I’ve written a book. The stranger thing was, I enjoyed it. Yes, English. It may have been helpful for me to have taken more English and writing classes. I wrote a book anyway.

Five hundred years ago, the church of Jesus Christ underwent a Reformation. A lot happened after Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the castle church door in Wittenberg. But the fallout was not simply the start of Protestantism. The Roman Catholic Church also recast itself in response to Luther’s call for reforms. And contrary to common belief, Martin Luther did not set out to start a new church. Rather, he was trying to reform the church that already existed by reemphasizing its essence—namely, the “good news” (the gospel) that Jesus forgives and saves sinners. The unity of the church was broken when the pope rejected this call for reform and excommunicated Luther, starting a chain of events that did lead to the institutional fracturing of Christendom and to a plethora of alternative Christian theologies. But, as many – including conservative Catholics – now admit, the church did in fact need reforming. Today, the church – including its Protestant branches – also needs reforming. Some of the issues in contemporary Christianity are very similar to those in the late Middle Ages, though others are new. But if Luther’s theology can be blamed – however unfairly – for fragmenting Christianity, perhaps today it can help us recover the wholeness of Christianity. The religious climate in the early 21st-century is simultaneously highly religious and highly secularized. It is a time of extraordinary spiritual and theological diversity. In the spirit of the anniversary we are observing, this book will propose the kind of Christianity that is best suited for our day. The remedies offered here are available by way of the same theology that was the catalyst for reforming the church five hundred years ago.

To use C. S. Lewis’s words, John Warwick Montgomery was brought over the threshold of Christian faith “kicking and struggling.”
The year was 1949. The place, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Herman John Eckelmann, a persistent engineering student succeeded in goading Montgomery into religious discussions. Montgomery, a philosophy major disinterested in religion, found himself forced to consider seriously the claims of Jesus Christ in the New Testament in order to preserve his intellectual integrity. After no mean struggle he acknowledged his rebellion against God, asking His forgiveness.
Today, he is considered by many to be the foremost living apologist for biblical Christianity.
A renaissance scholar with a flair for controversy, he lives in France, England and the United States. His international activities have brought him into personal contact with some of the most exciting events of our time: not only was he in China In June 1989, but he was In Fiji during its 1987 bloodless revolution, was involved in assisting East Germans to escape during the time of the Berlin Wall, and was in Paris during the ‘days of May’ 1968.
He is an ordained Lutheran clergyman, an English barrister, and is admitted to practise as a lawyer before the Supreme Court of the United States and inscrit au Barreau de Paris, France. He obtained acquittals for the ‘Athens 3′ missionaries on charges of proselytism at the Greek Court of Appeals in 1986 and won the leading religious liberty cases of Larissis v. Greece and Bessarabian Orthodox Church v. Moldova before the European Court of Human Rights.
Dr. Montgomery is the author of more than fifty books in five languages. He holds ten earned degrees, Including a Master of Philosophy in Law from the University of Essex, England, a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and a Doctorate of the University in Protestant Theology from the University of Strasbourg, France, and the higher doctorate in law (LL.D.) from the University of Cardiff, Wales.
