Lacy Dawn perches precariously between the psychosis of childhood and the multiple neuroses of adolescence, buffeted by powerful gusts of budding sexuality and infused with a yearning to escape the grim and brutal life of a rural Appalachian existence. In this world, Daddy is a drunk with severe PTSD, an Iraq War Vet, and Mommy is an insecure wraith. The boss is a dodgy lecher, not above leering at the flat chest of an eleven-year-old girl.
Rarity From The Hollow is written in a simple declarative style that’s well- suited to the imaginary diary of a desperate but intelligent eleven-year-old – the story bumping joyfully between the extraordinary and the banal.
The central planet of the universe is a vast shopping mall, and Lacy Dawn must save her world from a menace that arrives in the form of a cockroach infestation. Look again and the space alien has made Daddy smart and happy – or at least an eleven year old girl’s notion of what a smart and happy man should be. He has also made Mommy beautiful, giving her false teeth and getting the food stamp lady off her back.
About the only thing in the book that is believable is the nature of the narrative voice, and it is utterly compelling. You find yourself convinced that “Hollow” was written as a diary-based autobiography by a young girl and the banal stems from the limits of her environment, the extraordinary from her megalomania. And that’s what gives Rarity From The Hollow a chilling, engaging verisimilitude that deftly feeds on both the utter absurdity of the characters’ motivations and on the progression of the plot.
Indeed, there are moments of utter darkness: In one sequence, Lacy Dawn remarks matter-of-factly that a classmate was whipped to death, and notes that the assailant, the girl’s father, had to change his underpants afterward because they were soiled with semen. In its fashion, the story identifies an sometimes overlooked micro nutrient when growing marijuana, and advocates for research into its medicinal use for treatment of Bipolar Disorder as an alternative to pharmaceuticals.
The story closes with a completed mission, the adolescent protagonist vowing not to get high before she’s graduated from college, the adults giggling, and the android boyfriend showing signs of growing a penis.
Long-time book critic, Barry Hunter closed his review, “…good satire is hard to find and science fiction satire is even harder to find.”
Rarity from the Hollow is A Children’s Story for Adults with a happily ever after ending.
Caution: Piers Anthony found that my novel was “…not for the prudish.” Kevin Patrick Mahoney, editor of the once noteworthy site, Authortrek, found that it was, “…not for the faint hearted or easily offended….” An early voice in the 1st chapter speaks about things that no child should know. It is that of a traumatized child – a voice most of us never listen to, or want to hear, but in real life is screaming. Author proceeds have been donated to a child abuse prevention program in the author’s home state, West Virginia.
This passage is mild in comparison to some of the disclosures that kids have made during actual group psychotherapy sessions that the author facilitated over the years. By child developmental stage, it is similar to the infamous early adolescent insult in E.T: “penis breath.” It is tame in comparison to the content of the popular T.V. series, Southpark, which was devoured by millions of teens.
Except for a scene involving domestic violence in the 3rd chapter, this early dialogue is the only mildly graphic content. There are no graphic sex scenes in the novel. The renewed romance between the protagonist’s parents does include sexual reference. The android coming of age during his pursuit of humanity is reality-based. However, Lacy Dawn never lets the android get farther than to kiss her on the cheek. The android expresses no interest in sex – he falls in love, all consuming love by the middle of the story. The “F word” is used once, but there is no other profanity.

In 1950, Robert Eggleton was born into an impoverished family in West Virginia. His alcoholic and occasionally abusive father suffered from PTSD — captured by the Nazis during WWII. His mother did the best she could, but Robert began working as a child to feed his family. He started paying into Social Security at age 12, dreamed of a brighter future, but has continued work for the last 52 years.
In the 8th grade, Robert won the school’s short story contest. The award made his dreams concrete — a writer. As it often does, Life got in the way — the Vietnam war motivated him to go to college to avoid the draft. As covered by the press, he organized students to end mandatory ROTC. Except for a poem published in the state’s competition for publication in an student anthology and another poem published in a local alternative newspaper, his creative juices were spent writing handouts for antiwar activities and on class assignments. He graduated in 1973 with a degree in social work with no student loan debt.
Robert worked in the field of substance abuse treatment as he attended graduate school at WVU. Creative writing had been put on hold. After earning an MSW in 1977, he focused on children’s advocacy. He helped establish a shelter for runaways, a community-based residential program for high risk youth, and a state-wide network of emergency children’s shelters. His heartfelt need to write was dissipated somewhat by the publication of nationally distributed social service models, grants, and in 1983 he was invited to present his research on foster care drift to a national audience.
Robert’s dream of becoming a creative writer continued to take a back seat to nonfiction when he accepted a job as a juvenile investigator for the West Virginia Supreme Court. He worked in this role from 1984 until mid 1997. During this period he was the primary author of dozens or investigative reports on children’s institutions, and statistical reports on child abuse and delinquency published by the Court, and now archived by the state’s Division of Culture and History.
After running a small nonprofit agency that served folks with development disabilities, Robert went back home to direct services. He accepted a position as a Therapist in an intensive outpatient children’s mental health program. Most of the kids, like Robert, had been traumatized, some having experienced extreme sexual abuse. One day at work in 2006 it all clicked together and the Lacy Dawn Adventures project was born — an empowered female protagonist beating up the evil forces that victimize and exploit others to get anything and everything that they want.
But, Robert soon found out that it takes much more than good creative writing to become an author. It wasn’t like in the 8th grade when his hand-printed story had won the school’s contest. He was naive about the protocols within the marketplace. Technology was in a period of rapid advancement with Publisher presenting a mixture of electronic and traditional submission guidelines and publication formats. Robert was lost. A day after he registered for his first ever science fiction forum experience, he was banned for life due to what the moderator said was self-promotion.
The day after that happened, Robert assessed his creative writing situation during a group therapy session at work. He looked into the kids’ faces as they disclosed the horrors that they had experienced. It fueled his determination to make the Lacy Dawn Adventures project work, and he dedicated half of any author proceeds to a child abuse prevention program. He had boxed himself in.
Subsequently, three short Lacy Dawn Adventures were published. All three magazines went defunct. Print magazines were dying faster than seals in an oil spill. Robert found a publisher for his first novel, a small traditional press located in Leeds. Since the publisher was willing to bear all upfront costs, Robert signed the contract and Rarity from the Hollow was released in 2012 as a paperback and eBook by Dog Horn Publishing.
Robert then learned that release of his novel was the beginning of a long journey called marketing. His novel received glowing reviews, most notably by long-time book critic Barry Hunter and by the Missouri Review, award winning authors Darrell Bain, and Piers Anthony, and other authors and editors. A few months ago, Robert’s writing was compared to Vonnegut by the editor of the Electric Review, A Universe on the Edge. At this time, a new review is being written by the editor of Talisman and should be out shortly.
Today, Robert is holding off on the sequel to Rarity from the Hollow until he achieves greater name recognition. He is contemplating early retirement despite still being poor so that he can have more time to make his dream come true — a creative writer. Q: Why John Montclair? Who is he?
A: I’ve always been a fan of mystery thrillers and detective mysteries. Writing in the mystery and suspense genre was the most natural and obvious choice for me. John Montclair is a man a lot of people can relate to: he’s dedicated at work, tries to do his best, is not always appreciated and understood, has bills to pay, a daughter he loves and sometimes, he encounters great challenges. That’s when it gets interesting.
Q: What has been your inspiration?
A: I read a lot and like most writers, I use my imagination. But I also observe people around me and I reflect on my personal experiences. So basically, I get inspired by fiction and real life.
Q: Real life? What happened?
A: I’ve been in dangerous and scary situations a couple of times. I’ve had an automatic pistol pointed at my forehead once, for example. The guy was bigger than me and drunk.
Q: What did you do? Did you kick his butt?
A: I wish! That’s what John would do. Unfortunately, things aren’t that simple in real life. A trigger is very easy to pull. I took my chance and I ran away. I was very lucky he didn’t shoot me in the back, but I think I did the smart thing. I wasn’t going to be a hero. I’m not a hero, but John is. He’s the man I wish I could be.
Q: You said a couple of times; what else happened to you?
A: I used to have a part time job as a waiter. One day, a client with obvious mental issues showed up and he pulled a knife. We’ve called the police and I helped them to handle the guy. I’ve also witnessed serious street fights where baseball bats and thick beer bottles were involved. That’s very scary, believe me.
Q: How did it influence your writing?
A: I’m trying to be as realistic as possible based on my own experience. Sometimes, you have to do what’s necessary and it’s not always pretty. People make mistakes, it’s life. When we have limited resources and very little time to think, something has to happen. However, I write to entertain my readers so imagination is my main tool.
Q: Is it true that you had to deal with the Mafia?
A: I’m not sure, this is always a gray area. But it was in Asia, in the financial industry, and death threats and intimidation had been used. So I let you judge…

I’m a down-to-earth person but I hate reality. Paying the bills, worrying, arguing, fighting, hurting, being disappointed, being rejected, feeling unworthy… It sucks. Even for someone like me who struggle to express my feelings.
Instead, I love dreaming about beautiful clothes, beautiful people, luxury cars, private jets, yachts, exotic destinations and champagne (even though I can’t drink alcohol because of my gastric reflux… but I digress). Oh, and having hot sex whenever I want too, of course. That’s also in my daydreaming list. I know, it’s pretty materialistic but hey, this is MY dream.
I dislike haters but I also envy people who seem happier than me. How do I know they seem happier? I just look at their photos on social medias… I know it’s not always real but sometimes I’m just too vulnerable. Yep, I can be quite sensitive and emotional, especially when I feel that I’m missing out something.
My favorite colors are black and gold, I’m afraid of cats, I can’t eat spicy at all, I love children, I love watching boxing and imagine I can do the same in real life and I fantasize about owning a Harley Davidson but I’m too chicken to actually ride a motorbike.
Oh, and I happen to write books too. I’m a storyteller.

Kadashan was born in Sitka, Alaska. His grandmother named him after her father, John Kadashan. The elder Kadashan was known by historians as Chief Kadashan, however in his later years he was regarded as a “peace-maker.” When he was only six months old his father drowned in a hunting accident. His mother decided to move back to her hometown of Yakutat, where she married his step-father. After his elementary school years in Yakutat he went “outside” to Holland High School in Holland Michigan and later to Mount Edgecombe Boarding School near Sitka in Alaska. Kadashan did not start looking into writing before attending a creative writing class at Sheldon Jackson College. And even then, it wasn’t until during his time at Brigham Young that he learned the real discipline of writing. In 1992 he self-published a collection of short stories. For six years he worked as a columnist for the Juneau Empire and a statewide Native newspaper, the Tundra Times.
He learned a lot about tribal issues when he worked as the Tribal President of the Yakutat Tlingit Tribe. He drew from his experiences to write about politics for the Empire.
Kadashan is a contemporary author who draws his inspiration from the oral traditions of his Tlingit people. Of course, because of his Tlingit heritage, he is strongly influenced by traditional oral narratives, which stem from his education at Sheldon Jackson College and Brigham Young University, his work also reflects influences from Western Culture. Kadashan should not be regarded as an author torn between two poles, but rather as a mediator and like his great grandfather, Kadashan, is through his writings, a “peace maker”.

And even then, it wasn’t until during his time at Brigham Young that he learned the real discipline of writing. In 1992 he self-published a collection of short stories. For six years he worked as a columnist for the Juneau Empire and a statewide Native newspaper, the Tundra Times.
He learned a lot about tribal issues when he worked as the Tribal President of the Yakutat Tlingit Tribe. He drew from his experiences to write about politics for the Empire.
Kadashan is a contemporary author who draws his inspiration from the oral traditions of his Tlingit people. Of course, because of his Tlingit heritage, he is strongly influenced by traditional oral narratives, which stem from his education at Sheldon Jackson College and Brigham Young University, his work also reflects influences from Western Culture. Kadashan should not be regarded as an author torn between two poles, but rather as a mediator and like his great grandfather, Kadashan, is through his writings, a “peace maker”.

Kadashan was given his birth name by his grandmother who named him after her father, John Kadashan, a clan leader from Wrangell, located on the southern end of the southeast panhandle. The elder Kadashan, as a young man, was one of the guides to world traveler and naturalist, John Muir. In his elder years he was known as a “peace-maker” among his native peoples. Kadashan means “red tide coming.”
Kadashan began writing when he was in college. He was encouraged to by his creative writing instructor, who recognized his passion for story-telling. Twenty years later his retired teacher and college mentor visited him, read the stories he had stored in a drawer, and persuaded him to find a publisher. In time his rejection slips were thicker than his manuscripts. Eventually, he was discovered by the publisher of the Alaska Native Magazine who began to feature his short stories and his water color paintings that illustrated his stories. Yaakwdaat Aya is now published as a short story collection.
Shortly after, he began writing essays for the Tundra Times, a statewide Alaska Native newspaper. His commentaries dealt with Indian politics and tribal governments. Eventually he was under contract with the Juneau Empire and wrote a monthly column for the Capital city’s statewide newspaper. He tweaked these essays and self-published The Laws of Nature and Nature’s God in eBook.

Why did you decide to write romance novels?
I fell in love with romance novels when I was a teenager. I can’t imagine writing anything else because I’m an optimist. I love the happy ending.
How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?
My life experiences and personality bleeds through my writing. I enjoy creating stories with strong women fiction elements because I feel my life has followed the course of many other women. It is how we relate to each other.
What kind of research do you do for a book?
Depends on the book, some require more research than others. In my Family Tree series, I read everything I could get my hands on about spiritual guides. It helped me understand what need to be in the book.
Do you feel humor is important in fiction and why? Yes, and I try to add it into every book. This is more difficult than others. But I do believe that humor is needed in life so it has to be in books too.
What is your writing routine once you start a book? Once I started a book, I tried to work on it every day during the week. I like to take weekends off to spend time with my husband.
What about your family, do they know not to bother you when you are writing – or are there constant interruptions?
I don’t have much trouble with family interruptions both of my boys are grown. Only the occasional call will cause a problem.
What do you do to relax and recharge your batteries? My husband and I love to travel and play golf. That’s the main way I recharge my batteries.
13 Favorite Foods in no particular order. Mainly, because on any given day my taste can change.
1. Nachos
2. Cheesecake
3. Ham with strawberry sauce (I make this every year for Christmas eve)
4. Divinity – love to make this too.
5. Lasagna
6. Pizza – all meat with a thin crust
7. Fudge with walnuts
8. A thick steak – medium with a baked potato
9. Salad – Red Robin – Barbque Chicken salad oh, oh, really like this
10. Manicotti
11. Pineapple coconut cake ( have a great recipe I cook for this one too.)
12. Kolaches – ( make these too with apricot filling. So good.)
13. Mexican food – name it I probably love it.
As you can see, I live a normal life. I work in my office writing during the day and relax with my husband at night. I take off weekends and play golf. Who knows I might be the lady checking out at the grocery store behind you.

This is a book about people who are truly ingenious and on the front edge of medical technology that will change the course of humanity. It is also a book about egos that are bigger than life.
Life saving discoveries are discovered and pushed before their time and accelerated to limits much too soon to safely evaluate their side effects on human beings.
Jack Byrnes, Medical Director at Berkeley Brier Hospital ICU and his wife Beth, the head ICU nurse are concerned with their Patient Rachel Palmer and are excited with technology that has helped her recover at a rapid, unheard of rate.
Greed, egos, overconfidence and shortcuts give way to reality and create an unnecessary catastrophe that makes for a believable stress filled and haunting suspense novel that I had trouble putting down. The Plague Within is an intriguing, breathtaking story written by a medical doctor who leaves the reader wondering if this set of circumstances could or will happen in the stage of human need to play God.
This author’s writing skills and ability to tell a believable fast-paced storyline kept me on the edge of my chair frantically flipping pages.

She offers assistance with the writing, finding illustrators, editors and (when necessary) ghostwriters, and works with clients on ways to promote their books after publishing and listing on Amazon.
In addition to her work as a self-publishing coach, Ally has edited an on-line parenting magazine, managed parent-oriented forums, and has written and published articles for a parenting magazine. She is also a trained chef and is currently working on a unique cookbook that combines child-friendly recipes with parenting tips on how to build a child’s confidence and develop a closer bond with your child in the kitchen.
