As a child I had stories going through my head. It took me a long time to realise I should write them down, therefore clearing my mind. Little did I know another one would pop up!
I wanted to be painter since I was a child. I was told, while being assessed at the end of my art foundation, I should go into drama or be a stand-up comedian. I’m short, so even if I did ‘stand up’ it’d be hard to see me and I realise that was their way of telling me I was rubbish at art.
I’ve worked in various jobs and I have been extremely lucky to do what I wanted to do… though I have a habit of changing my mind every so often.
If you want something, go for it. The only thing holding you back is you. You only have one life so don’t say ‘if only’ say ‘well at least I tried’.
Writing, like anything creative, is an exposure. Not everyone likes what you write, what you say or what you think… but some people do. That’s my focus. On the people who like what you write… what I write.

Tlingit people are often labeled as “stoic” or “worrier,” but in actuality we are a community-focused people whose own stories reveal what are often universal truths and traditional insights. Kadashan accomplishes this vision of “universality” in simple but profound story of one man’s struggle with his own traditional beliefs and those of the dominant culture.
Tlingit stories are rarely without a moral or straightforward point. This is true in this book, and although it may seem outside the boundaries of defined fascinating fiction, this story is true to the makeup of Tlingit oratory. Here in Kadashan’s writing, there is a history, a reality of experience and discovery that it is typical in Tlingit storytelling. The elements of fiction are present, but so are the elements of traditional imagery—as in the presence of Raven’s presence, which unites traditional and modern story, bringing insights to the main character’s struggles. Kadashan was born in Sitka, Alaska. His grandmother named him after her father, John Kadashan. The elder Kadashan was known by historians as Chief Kadashan, however in his later years he was regarded as a “peace-maker.” When he was only six months old his father drowned in a hunting accident. His mother decided to move back to her hometown of Yakutat, where she married his step-father. After his elementary school years in Yakutat he went “outside” to Holland High School in Holland Michigan and later to Mount Edgecumbe Boarding School near Sitka in Alaska. Kadashan did not start looking into writing before attending a creative writing class at Sheldon Jackson College. And even then, it wasn’t until during his time at Brigham Young that he learned the real discipline of writing. In 1992 he self-published a collection short stories. For six years he worked as a columnist for the Juneau Empire and statewide Native newspaper, the Tundra Times.
He learned a lot about tribal issues when he worked as the Tribal President of the Yakutat Tlingit Tribe. He drew from his experiences to write about politics for the Empire.
Kadashan is a contemporary author who draws his inspiration from the oral traditions of his Tlingit people. Of course, because of his Tlingit heritage, he is strongly influenced by traditional oral narratives, which stem from his education at Sheldon Jackson College and Brigham Young University, his work also reflects influences from Western Culture. Kadashan should not be regarded as an author torn between two poles, but rather as a mediator and like his great grandfather Kadashan is, through his writings, a “peace maker”.

To date I have taken part in a number of very successful local spoken word events plus local and BBC radio interviews. I have also had some very successful signings in various bookshops as well as on the Red Funnel Ferry, sponsors of the IOW Literary Festival. My books are available in Waterstones, W.H. Smiths and other local outlets as well as on-line from Waterstones, Gardners Books, Nielsen and Amazon.
I am happy to talk about all or any of my books, anecdotes from my life as an Advertising Copywriter in Soho in the 80’s or stories relating to the inspiration behind my novels.
