I wanted to be painter since I was a child. I was told, while being assessed at the end of my art foundation, I should go into drama or be a stand-up comedian. I’m short, so even if I did ‘stand up’ it’d be hard to see me and I realise that was their way of telling me I was rubbish at art.
I’ve worked in various jobs and I have been extremely lucky to do what I wanted to do… though I have a habit of changing my mind every so often.
If you want something, go for it. The only thing holding you back is you. You only have one life so don’t say ‘if only’ say ‘well at least I tried’.

I’ve always been a story teller but only recently have a drummed up the courage to share my stories in writing. When my kids were young one of our favorite activities was to lay in bed, just before bedtime and make up stories. They would get to pick out some of the characters and I’d just start spinning the tale. They loved making me backup and change the story to fit their mind for the night. Since they are all too old for this now, I’ve taken to writing.My influences are pretty wide ranging. Recent works I have enjoyed are; Elizabeth Moon’s Vatta’s war, Nathan Lowell’s Solar Clipper Tales. Perhaps my favorite modern author is L.E. Modesitt Jr. with his Recluce and Imager series. Early on I enjoyed just about anything Heinlein wrote, including, Starship Troopers and Have Spacesuit – Will Travel. I also loved Asimov, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle and when they got together for A Mote in God’s Eye it was magic!
I have had to separate my writing career from my professional career so as to not make things too confusing at work, so, yes Jamie McFarlane is a pseudonym. All of my writing is done in the evening hours and on the weekends. I have to admit to looking forward to coming home every evening so that I can spend time with my imaginary friends.

Creative people are weird, and it sucks. But it doesn’t have to.
We know our brains aren’t like other people’s brains. We think the difference in our brains is “the problem,” but it’s not.
The problem is that we think our brains should be like other people’s brains. We feel weird. We feel we don’t fit in. We think there’s something wrong with us because our brains are different.
Some other people also think that we’re weird, that we don’t fit in and that there’s something wrong with us. Fortunately, those people are unimportant. Yes, even if it’s your boss or your mother-in-law. Sure, in that case they’re important to your life in some way. But what they think doesn’t matter because they don’t get a vote about you.
The people who get a vote—the people who love you for who you are—they don’t think you’re weird, or at least not in a bad way. They don’t think there’s something wrong with you because you have a different brain. They love you for who you are. And a huge part of who you are comes from…your brain.
The people who love you also know that your brain is different. They also know that’s a good thing.
So you have this different kind of brain. If you’re awake, the inside of your mind is like a browser with eleventy-seven tabs open, at the same time that 17 radios are blaring at full volume on 17 stations as different as they can be, all while 81 video monitors project vivid images into your brain’s visual cortex. Did I mention that 37 of those video monitors have sound accompanying the images and the others play music in different languages?
So, yeah. Being creativecan suck sometimes. It’s not just the sense of being weird, but also the sheer weight of all the stuff going on in your head. Add in the pressure of feeling like you’re “supposed” to be able to think, act and feel like people who don’t have your brain, and it can all be a little “too much of a muchness,” as a friend of mine liked to say.
Creativity can suck, but then there are those moments.
Those moments when you’re talking to your best friend about stupid television cartoons, and out of your mouth rolls absolutely the most perfect idea you’ve ever had.
Those moments when you’re talking to another creative person or to someone who really gets you, and you suddenly realize that you are, in that moment, exactly the person you’re supposed to be.
Those moments when you’re trying to come up with a character for a story and one of the voices in your brain says, “Immortal pirate astronaut,” and you immediately know how to make that work.
The thing is that we tend to think those moments are the exception, and left out and weird is who we really are.
We’ve had it backwards all along.
We really are brilliant and special and, yes, amazingly and profoundly creative.
We just didn’t get the owner’s manual for our brains when we got them. I’m sure it was a simple oversight.
I decided that people like us need, more than anything, an owner’s manual for our brains.
So I wrote one.
It’s called The Leonardo Trait, and this is what a couple of readers have said about it:

I’m Angie Dixon. I’d like to tell you a bit about who I am and what I do.First, I hate talking about myself in the third person, so I’m not going to.
I have known I was a writer since I was five years old. I took all the paper off the shelf.
My teacher told me to put it all back except one piece.
My best friend Mark stood up and said, “She’s going to write a book.” As only a kindergarten teacher can Mrs. Carnahan said, “Well, then, she’ll have to write it one piece of paper at a time.”
So I did. I’ve written more than 35 books, most of which are no longer available.
Here’s what I write now:
Creativity: I’ve now written three editions of The Leonardo Trait, my book on life as a profoundly creative person Juggling multiple projects and ideas while trying – and failing – to fit into the world the way other people seem to.
Career Search: I first wrote the career search Guide Your Heart’s Work in 2009 as a gift for my best friend. I’ve recently split that book into topics for several focused guides, now published as the Your Heart’s Work Series.
Personal Growth: I’ve been writing about personal development and self-help for nearly 20 years. I’ve recently updated some of my older work and started writing new books in a series called Your Best Life.
Children’s Picture Books: I love to write, and I’ve recently started a series of kids’ picture books, called the Kids Discover Series, which I write under the name A. D. Dixon.
