The author of Steamroll is a corporate attorney who has represented corporate debtors in bankruptcy and witnessed frustrating results in our national bankruptcy system. His legal work for a publicly traded geothermal company, and as Assistant General Counsel for a large independent United States oil company with operations in Siberia, has given him the first-hand experience to validate his accounts as credible. Although much of Steamroll appears authentic, it is a work of fiction, and any similarity of any of its characters to any person living or dead, is unintended and purely coincidental. The author earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Stanford University, his Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Southern California, and his Masters in Business Administration from U.C.L.A. Shulamit Hartal was blessed with a multi-faceted creativity that expressed itself in sculpture, journalism, teaching and fiction. Born in Israel in 1937, in her early twenties she married Dov Hartal, (who had been her childhood sweetheart) and studied journalism at the Advanced School for Law and Economics in Tel Aviv, the institute that would become the University of Tel Aviv. Her journalistic skills were put to use when she worked for seven years at Israel’s leading daily newspaper, Haaretz, both as a journalist – with a weekly column for the youth supplement of Haaretz on art and on handicrafts -as well as reviewing new consumer products and appliances. She also worked in the archive at Haaretz. The weekly articles on crafts for youth were collected in two volumes and became the books: “Home Boutique”, “With Your Own Hands” (Karni Publications, in Hebrew).
Soon after the couple spent five years in the United States, where Shulamit studied sculpture at the University of Minesota, and Dov, a chemical engineer, completed his Ph.D in Food Science and Biotechnology.
On their return to Israel, Shulamit pursued further studies in sculpture at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv.
Meanwhile, the couple had three children, a boy and two girls. Both daughters both showed artistic leanings and eventually went to art school, to The Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design (Jerusalem) and The Shenkar College of Engineering and Design (Tel Aviv).
Yet despite her diverse interests and talents, Shulamit Hartal’s true love remained sculpture, which provided an outlet for her tremendous creativity. She developed a method of sculpture using wire mesh, which narrows the gap between a concept and its realization in three dimensions. Terming this innovation the “Hartal Method”, Shulamit wrote a book outlining its use, Kal VeChomer (1993, available through the Tel Aviv Museum store).
For over thirty years she was a much-loved and charismatic teacher of sculpture, not only deploying considerable people skills, but passing on the Hartal method to some two thousand students. From around the world, and over the course of decades, many of her students remained regularly in touch until her untimely death in November 2013.
“Finding the Grain” was Hartal’s fifth book and first novel (apart from the craft books and the book on the Hartal Method, there was also a charming book for children, inspired by her grandchildren, “Curly Eyal”). The idea for Finding the Grain, (which in the original Hebrew was titled Tarnegolet Iveret, “Blind Chicken”) was sparked off when Hartal literally stumbled over a pile of psychology books at the local recycling center. Later, in what was to be the last year of her life, Hartal devoted herself to this heavily auto-biographical novel. At first she worked intensively and in the final months, feverishly. The book saw publication two weeks before she herself succumbed to cancer in November 2013, at the age of 76.

Born far too long ago in podunk Oklahoma City, Matt Howerter is one of those guys who grew up loving to draw, watching cartoons and playing RPGs (the kind where you sit at a table and the other players are generally in the same room with you).

During those difficult years of middle/high school he learned that people could actually make money from drawing (not much but it’s something). From that point on he knew what he wanted to do for the rest of his life… architecture. The magnitude of fail going forward to study architecture cannot be put into words. Let’s just say that Matt lost two years of his life and a ton of money to college courses he would never use again. Ultimately, through dedication, diligence and desperation he changed his major to Visual Communications and graduated having spent only six years in college.

Graduating from The University of Oklahoma in 1995 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Matt has worked in many different environments, taking on rolls as designer, illustrator and art director. His true loves have always been illustration and storytelling, which he hopes to continue for the rest of his days.

Jon Reinke
Born in Asmara, Ethiopia while his dad was making mouthwash for Haile Selassie, Jon was ever the adventurer wannabe.

Since graduating with almost two hundred undergrad hours from the University of Oklahoma, (yes, they miss him horribly. Professional students are a godsend to any University, particularly when the football team is in a slump as the Sooners were in the early 90’s). Jon has pursued moderately successful careers in construction, recycling, energy conservation, sustainable development and health care. Interestingly, he has found that he has a talent for pretty much all of them, but he has always been drawn to the stories that spark the imagination.

Jon cut his fantasy teeth on Tolkien, as did so many other fan boys, but has had the good fortune to cross genres into works of historical fiction, biography, business development and cooking. It really was only a matter of time before he embarked on a quest to get his own story on virtual paper.

Without doubt, this has been the most fun he has had in any career so far, and he fervently hopes that you find that same joy in the work.

Lou Malloy has just maxed out on a fifteen year prison sentence for the theft of $15 million and just before leaving prison he learns that his sister is brutally killed. In the meantime, he has to fight off predators trying to get their hands on the money he stole and keep from being sent back to prison trying to protect those dear to him. In the course of events, Malloy and Kelly become more than just friends and Kelly decides to throw in with Malloy. Together they work to uncover exactly what happened to Malloy’s sister and why. Their search involves a vicious gang led by a vengeful old man and his crazy son who has his own problems keeping his hands off other women. To make matters worse, Malloy and Kelly’s search is complicated by the fact that Malloy’s sister was really a special agent with the Department of Homeland Security and she was working undercover when she was killed trying to locate the whereabouts of special plates to produce counterfeit currency that if the plates end up in the wrong hands, whole banking systems of major foreign countries could collapse overnight.

As Malloy and Kelly race to find the killer of Malloy’s sister, they enlist the help of Crusher, a pro wrestler who served in the cell next to Malloy at the Atlanta Penitentiary. The decision is made for Malloy and company to hit the same casino again that Malloy robbed fifteen years ago by a special ops unit of the Department of Homeland Security. The plan is complicated by the fact that the ops unit is a phony setup led by a former agent turned rouge who is backed by another vicious gang with international contacts intent on getting their hands on the missing money plates. Malloy decides to go through with the heist of the casino a second time, but on a different schedule than planned. If they don’t make it they have no way to return to the real world.
