I used to be quite heavily into the Punk scene and music where I found myself. Now I listen to a lot more Tom Waits than Aus Rotten and that seems to have had a big effect on the rest of my life as well. I did however write a lot in a punk band…again something people look down at me for for some reason or another. But what they forget is I was telling a story as a poet when I did that. I was homeless for a while, lost a few good friend to their lifestyle choice and saw the good and bad in people. To write these experiences and make it interesting is difficult enough. To do it to a beat, rhythm and to rhyme is even harder. I have to say though very different; I’m as proud of the songs I wrote as of the book I have.

I love sci-fi and I would say my all time favourite author I would say is Philip K. Dick. I love the way you can be 50,000 words into a book with 3000 to go, and in those last 3000 words the world is turned upside so everything you read before is thrown in a washing machine with a cheese grater. I love that about him. I have also started reading a lot of Stephen King. I kept away from him for a while as I always thought he can’t be as good as I expect him to be. I was very wrong. The Dark Tower is amazing (1 1/2 books to go) as well as the Stand which I have just finished.

When Kathrin was eight, she made up stories, cast the other kids in parts, raided her mother’s closet and then started rehearsals immediately. Much later she studied theatre and film at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada and became an award-winning playwright and started teaching. She collaborated with award-winning Canadian playwrights Marc Diamond and Guillermo Verdecchia, and started writing for the small and large screens. She formed a brief writing partnership with the late, great comedy writer, Irwin Barker, who would go on to write for Rick Mercer (in Canada that is equivalent to writing for David Letterman).

On a dare, she also started a newspaper in Vancouver called The Drive in the happening arts neighbourhood and has written articles and non-fiction pieces for many publications. Later, Kathrin founded The Vancouver School of Writing and is a full time writer, writing coach and organizes events to give training in writing and publishing both online and off.

Her first non-fiction book was “From Survival to Thrival”, then “Putting Fear in Reverse Gear”, “The A to Zen of Writing” book series, and now “Writing with Cold Feet.” She frequently holds seminars or gives keynotes about writing and publishing across The United States, Canada and Mexico.
