These stories span some thirty years and have been chosen because when I have recounted them, they have elicited a variety of reactions from the incredulous to the astounded, but rarely without some amount of laughter. They are based on explosive experiences I have had over some thirty years, ranging from a 10 year old potential boat destroyer to a forty year-old taking desperate steps to join the exclusive Mile High Club. In between are revelations that might shock, but I hope will amuse.
If you should only chuckle at each of my stories, publishing this book will have been worthwhile.

Somerset born, Somerset bred – strong in the arm but weak in the head: labouring under this pre-conceived notion I, as the grandson of a brewer’s drayman, was fortunate enough to get a leg-up on entry to the local grammar school, followed by an engineering apprenticeship in the aircraft industry.During this time I received my first exposure to the world of writing and publication as editor of the firm’s apprentice magazine – not a stellar beginning perhaps, but it fired an interest which, coupled with aircraft engineering exposure, took me to writing military equipment technical works and financial proposals. After nearly twenty years of original aeronautical and related engineering, I concluded that, following further government cuts, diversification was the only way forward for me.
Aged 40 I somehow managed to add a teaching degree and an MSc to my engineering qualifications as a necessary precursor to a tardy career change. After some years in the secondary, tertiary and university education sector, I ‘decided’ on early retirement from this field following a successful battle with the big C and a wish to do more living and less working. With experience in aviation and as a pilot, together with a love of all things mechanical particularly steam engines, I enjoy injecting my real-world experiences into my writing.
My ‘retirement’ has enabled greater devotion to travel and a better understanding of life in general and, as a polyglot and polymath, I am fortunate to be able to bring a wealth of experience from my 60-odd years to the world of authorship. Although my passion is for novels of an historical bent surrounded by mystery, complex plot and intrigue I also like to intersperse my serious novels with lighter works of a humorous nature. I spend a good deal of time overseas and am blessed with a beautiful writing environment on the island of Crete where my imagination, though drawing heavily on reality, is able to flourish in a tranquil stress-free environment.

Alternate Hilarities was originally a small press fan-zine in the early nineties
of funny stories in my favorite genres, Science fiction, Fantasy and Horror. Six
issues were produced against my ex-wife’s express wishes. And they were
terrible! Just Terrible!
It had a semi professional look but proofing was not my strong suit. I had no
funds to hire a proof reader and let’s face it, volunteers suck. But the stories
were great. Many talented authors sent in great funny stories. With concepts
like games show in the afterlife, the last man alive and the secret life of a
teenaged mad scientist.
But in the end, the cost of publishing my pet project became too much and
the zine was retired.
Now, two decades later, the overhead and distribution issues of the small
press have almost disappeared with the advent of eBooks. With a new partner
in crime who can do line edits, I decided to give my old love a second shot.
So, here it is, The New and Improved Alternate Hilarities. We have Alien
invasions and Abductions, Time Travel, Ghost Ships, Demonic Possessions,
Flatulent Clowns, Body Switching, Talking Monkeys and Feghoots.
So off we go. With Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror and Hilarities for all!

Following that, he became a studio guitarist in Southern California, and soon began his composing career.

His extraordinary talent in writing led him to compose for Sea World, Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, Disney, the Muppets, the Republic of China, the 1994 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Seville World’s Fair and the Kennedy Space and Rocket Center, as well as TV and radio commercials for Jeep, Toyota, Chrysler, Folgers Coffee, NBC, etc.
One of his more challenging commissions, The Nautilus Suite, was a composition for five jazz soloists and full orchestra, for the San Diego Symphony––which featured the great saxophonists Charles MacPherson, along with Hollis Gentry and guitarist Peter Sprague––among others.
He was also commissioned to compose a “trio” suite for violin, jazz bass and piano featuring Mary Karo, Bob Magnusson and pianist for Ella Fitzgerald, Mike Wofford.
His spiritual pursuits led him to The Western Esoteric Tradition. During that time, Stephen was initiated into the Knights Templars in Chartres Cathedral in Avignon, France, The Rosicrucian Order AMORC, The Martinist Order, The Order of Pythagorus and the The Order of Melchizedek. He also completed the full course from the Barbados School of Esoteric Studies. Stephen is now a practitioner of Qi Gong.
