I combine working as a university research manager with running my own writing and editorial business and raising my family. It’s a very busy lifestyle, but I really enjoy the variety of experience that it gives me.Over the years I’ve had all kinds of non-fiction published (a book, academic papers and magazine articles), as well as ghost writing two other books. I’ve always been a story teller but only recently have a drummed up the courage to share my stories in writing. When my kids were young one of our favorite activities was to lay in bed, just before bedtime and make up stories. They would get to pick out some of the characters and I’d just start spinning the tale. They loved making me backup and change the story to fit their mind for the night. Since they are all too old for this now, I’ve taken to writing.My influences are pretty wide ranging. Recent works I have enjoyed are; Elizabeth Moon’s Vatta’s war, Nathan Lowell’s Solar Clipper Tales. Perhaps my favorite modern author is L.E. Modesitt Jr. with his Recluce and Imager series. Early on I enjoyed just about anything Heinlein wrote, including, Starship Troopers and Have Spacesuit – Will Travel. I also loved Asimov, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle and when they got together for A Mote in God’s Eye it was magic!
I have had to separate my writing career from my professional career so as to not make things too confusing at work, so, yes Jamie McFarlane is a pseudonym. All of my writing is done in the evening hours and on the weekends. I have to admit to looking forward to coming home every evening so that I can spend time with my imaginary friends.

I grew up on the Gulf Coast and a seagoing career just came naturally. After graduation from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, I sailed as a ship’s officer for a number of years and then spent a decade in shore side ship management before becoming an independent (i.e. self-employed) marine surveyor in 1986. Some years later I formed a company specializing in ship construction management and supervision. I’ve been a lot of places, seen interesting things, and lived for extended periods in both South America and the Far East (Singapore and China). By far the most interesting aspect of travel (and life in general) is the people you meet along the way, and I’ve had the good fortune to encounter a lot of interesting characters. Bits and pieces of some of them make their way into the characters of my novels.I write the type of stories I like to read. For me, that means ordinary people forced by circumstances into extraordinary situations. I dislike stories in which the hero is some combination of brain surgeon/nuclear physicist (or who has some equally far-fetched skill set) and who just coincidentally happens to be an ace helicopter pilot and a fifth degree black belt in several different martial arts. Like the rest of us mortals, my characters are normal people who screw up from time to time and have to live with the results.
I’m currently retired from the marine business and living in Tennessee with my lovely (and patient) wife of 39 years. Our current and mutual ambition is to return to Singapore for several months each year. In addition to writing and travel, I occasionally (when cornered) complete a task on my ‘honey do’ list, and from time to time, join my wife in badgering our children to produce grandchildren. All in all, a rewarding life.

J.D. Lee is an author of fiction based in Los Angeles, Ca.He has a beautiful family and lives a modest life. He is currently pursuing a degree in economics and has a background in physics and philosophy. Any chance he gets, he likes to work various concepts and ideas from these topics into his writings. He has been writing short stories since he was a young child–at 12 he won a competition in his hometown and in 2012 he received honorable mention in the Wrekin Writers Doris Gooderson Short Story Competition–but it wasn’t until recently that Lee began writing novels. The Mediator Pattern is J.D. Lee’s first novel, and there are many more to come. He has also had a short story, Auto-Frankology, featured with one of the longest running science fiction, horror and fantasy magazines, Starburst Magazine, in their online Original Fiction category.
