Somerset born, Somerset bred – strong in the arm but weak in the head: labouring under this pre-conceived notion I, as the grandson of a brewer’s drayman, was fortunate enough to get a leg-up on entry to the local grammar school, followed by an engineering apprenticeship in the aircraft industry. During this time, I received my first exposure to the world of writing and publication as editor of the firm’s apprentice magazine – not a stellar beginning perhaps, but it fired an interest which, coupled with aircraft engineering exposure, took me to writing military equipment technical works and financial proposals.
After nearly twenty years of original aeronautical and related engineering, I concluded that, following further government cuts, diversification was the only way forward for me. Aged 40 I somehow managed to add a teaching degree and an MSc to my engineering qualifications as a necessary precursor to a tardy career change. After some years in the secondary, tertiary and university education sector, I ‘decided’ on early retirement from this field following a successful battle with the big C and a wish to do more living and less working. With experience in aviation and as a pilot, together with a love of all things mechanical particularly steam engines, I enjoy injecting my real-world experiences into my writing. My ‘retirement’ has enabled greater devotion to travel and a better understanding of life in general and, as a polyglot and polymath, I am fortunate to be able to bring a wealth of experience from my 60-odd years to the world of authorship. Although my passion is for novels of an historical bent surrounded by mystery, complex plot and intrigue I also like to intersperse my serious novels with lighter works of a humorous nature. He has worked for the USTA for 20 years on both the national and sectional levels. Prior to his transition to leading the D&I effort, he served as the Executive Director of the USTA’s Eastern Section, where he led it through unprecedented growth. During one disaster exercise he encountered a beautiful flight nurse from the University of California at Davis Medical Center. He wanted to meet this woman and a friend suggested he volunteer in the emergency room where the helicopter crew was based. He did it.At a young age, he never had the courage to speak with the flight nurse, but his career was initiated. He became an emergency medical technician (EMT) in 1991 and then went on to become a paramedic in 1992. By 1995, he was already working in international medicine with adventures in Saudi Arabia and a brief experience in war torn Sarajevo. After working in a refugee camp in Rwanda, he decided that he needed to obtain his nursing degree. In 1999, he completed his degree and continued on his quest to save lives, volunteer overseas and travel with medicine. Since then, he has practiced medicine on all seven continents including working as a flight nurse in Antarctica, a combat medic in Iraq and a disaster manager in Hurricane Katrina, the Asian Tsunami, the Haiti Earthquake, and Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines. Most recently he worked as the Chief Nurse in an Ebola Treatment Center in Liberia.
In addition to writing Saving Jimani: Life and Death in the Haiti Earthquake, Rene Steinhauer has written for numerous medical journals and magazines including: The Journal of Emergency Medical Services, the American Journal of Nursing, Parachutist Magazine and Soldier of Fortune Magazine.

Soon after, George meets Billy, a young woman with a brazen and unlikable personality. However, she is another ghost killer, and that makes her someone he needs to know. With the help of Billy and Phil, George looks for answers as to how and why he’s become what he is and who and what the dangerous man wants. His quest for knowledge leads him to new friends and allies, but also to enemies he could never have imagined, enemies that killed his mother and grandparents and now want him.

My name is Richard Porter in 2009. The doctors told me I had Prostate Cancer. At that time, I had just received a lead role in a play that I was acting in. The doctor told me to come into his office and sit down, that he wanted to explain some things to me.Mr. Porter the doctor said. You have three choices. You can do nothing and you will survive three years. Then we will only be able to make you comfortable with some medication. The second thing is to have an operation and clear all the Cancer out of your body. And lastly, you may take radiation treatments for that will also clear the Cancer from your body as well.
The medical procedures will leave you with some problems for the rest of your life. These procedures if done early enough will leave you with a better quality of life. We have seen a 90% success rate from having these procedures done. I walked out of that office afraid and angry.
Once I arrived at home,called my children, and we discuss, what would be the best decision for the family. We all agreed that radiation would be the best way for us to go. That was in November of 2009 as I went through those horrible weeks of radiation. Five days a week without fail.
I studied 300 lines that I had to bring to memory. I was the lead actor in the play called “The Devil Is Loose”. Most of those eight weeks were very uncomfortable. I still was able to perform and did a good job. I told none of the production staff about my medical condition.

Bob van Laerhoven was born on August 8th 1953 in the sandy soil of Antwerp’s Kempen, where according to the cliché ‘pig-headed clodhoppers’ live. This perhaps explains why he started to write stories at a particularly young age. Some speak of science fiction, but Van Laerhoven hates the expression and prefers to speak of social fiction. A number of his stories were published in English, French, German, Spanish and Slovenian.
Debut
Van Laerhoven made his debut as a novelist in 1985 with Nachtspel – Night Game. He quickly became known for his ‘un-Flemish’ style: he writes colourful, kaleidoscopic novels in which the fate of the individual is closely related to broad social transformations. His style slowly evolved in his later novels to embrace more personal themes while continuing to branch out into the world at large. International flair has become his trademark.
Avid traveller
Bob Van Laerhoven became a full-time author in 1991. The context of his stories isn’t invented behind his desk, rather it is rooted in personal experience. As a freelance travel writer, for example, he explored conflicts and trouble-spots across the globe from the early 1990s to 2005. Echoes of his experiences on the road also trickle through in his novels. Somalia, Liberia, Sudan, Gaza, Iran, Iraq, Myanmar… to name but a few.
Mass murders
During the Bosnian war, Van Laerhoven spent part of 1992 in the besieged city of Sarajevo. Three years later he was working for MSF – Doctors without frontiers – in the Bosnian city of Tuzla during the NATO bombings. At that moment the refugees arrived from the Muslim enclave of Srebrenica. Van Laerhoven was the first writer from the Low Countries to be given the chance to speak to the refugees. His conversations resulted in a travel book: Srebrenica. Getuigen van massamoord – Srebrenica. Testimony to a Mass Murder. The book denounces the rape and torture of the Muslim population of this Bosnian-Serbian enclave and is based on first-hand testimonies. He also concludes that mass murders took place, an idea that was questioned at the time but later proven accurate.
Multifaceted oeuvre
All these experiences contribute to Bob Van Laerhoven’s rich and commendable oeuvre, an oeuvre that typifies him as the versatile author of novels, travel stories, books for young adults, theatre pieces, biographies, poetry, non-fiction, letters, columns, articles… He is also a prize-winning author: in 2007 he won the Hercule Poirot Prize for best thriller of the year with his novel De Wraak van Baudelaire – Baudelaire’s Revenge. In 2013, the French translation “La Vengeance de Baudelaire” was published in France and in Canada. The English translation “Baudelaire’s Revenge” was edited in the US in 2014. Also in 2014 came the publication in France and in Canda of “Le Mensonge d’Alejandro”, a second novel (Alejandro’s leugen – Alejandro’s Lie) in French translation. I often say “Life is GREAT”. When I do, people will look at me funny and I can almost hear them thinking “What has this guy been smoking?”When someone asks me how I am, a favorite response of mine is “always good!” Once again, I get strange looks, often followed by comments like “you must really have a good life if you say that” or, “is that even possible?”
I don’t say those things just to make conversation, or in an effort to convince myself that it’s true. I say them because that is honestly how I feel, and how I experience life.
Don’t get me wrong – I’m not saying that I don’t have ups and downs, good times as well as bad. I do. That’s normal, every human on our planet has them. (I don’t know about the other planets) What I am however saying, is that happiness and being excited about life is both a choice and a state of mind.
In my teenage years, I was very shy and hardly spoke to anyone. If I think back today, there is actually very little that I remember from my school days. At the same time, I loved reading. My mother would take us to the public library once a week, and we were all allowed to borrow three books. By the next visit, I had not only read my own and my two siblings’ books, but had also checked if my mother had something that I could read. This meant that I read an average of nine to twelve books per week.
If I was interested in any subject, it was logical to find a book with the information and learn from it. I still remember “Popular Mechanics” and the hours of fun I had exploring all the fascinating subjects this great series covered. Another way for me to learn was to take things apart to see how they worked. More often than not, there were ‘spares’ left over after I had put the items back together, but I could normally get them to work again. My mother wasn’t too happy with the spare parts, so I learnt not to tell her about them.
This love of books and learning has stayed with me throughout my life. Computers weren’t around during my school days, but when I ‘discovered’ them, I taught myself how to program using books. What started as a hobby became a career, and I soon ran my own software development company – not bad for someone without any formal training in computers or programming!
When my kids were still at home, I read “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” and later “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families” by Stephen Covey.
These books were great for me, as in them, I finally found the principles that I could teach others.
This also led to me writing my own personal mission statement:
“I will help people become the best that they can be.”
The reason I’m telling you this is simply to assure you that the stuff I write about is not some theoretical mumbo jumbo. I have used the methods and seen the results – they work! Fortunately, I am hardheaded and thick skinned enough not to listen to the people around me that say something can’t be done.
Amongst many other things, I am a certified Life Coach. The very first session that I do with my clients teaches them how to set effective goals. Time and again I see a big change happening. There is no bigger satisfaction than seeing when someone suddenly realizes: “I can do this!”
Make no mistake – reaching your goals and slowly designing and building the life that you want is hard work. There are no short cuts. There is no easy way. This is not some magic formula that will change your life overnight.
BUT …
If you are willing to put in the effort, you can make your dreams come true.

But the allegation that he is guilty of “horrendous crimes” has raised the possibility that, if proven, they could sink his plan for the former British colony. A retired journalist heard the accusation from a sick friend, who died before he could provide details. The journalist, Simon Crerar, seeks the help of a former Hong Kong police officer, Mark Evans, to uncover the alleged offences. Although it was supposedly fiction, the film infuriated Sanwu, by then a rising member of the Communist Party, because it was popularly believed to be based on fact. The three met again in Shanghai, after the communists seized power in China, while Sanwu came, unwanted, into the life of Mary years later in Hong Kong. Her bizarre death had left Mark baffled. But now he wonders if it was one of the crimes attributed to Sanwu. There are many elements in Mary’s life that Mark finds puzzling. Gradually, with the help of Simon, he begins to discover answers and, most importantly, unearths an astonishing secret, which she kept from everyone until shortly before her death, when she revealed it to Sanwu. It proves to be the key to resolving all the questions with which Mark and Simon have been wrestling.

What better way to prove that I’m right?
Whether your favorite romantic comedy happens to be Serendipity, You’ve Got Mail, or Down with Love, it’s highly likely that I’ve tried them out, and that I can inform you about their effectiveness. To begin with, I choose Clueless, the most timeless of romantic comedies. After all, I could use some good karma, and to find love for my sister or my best friend seems like a good start to me.

Matt takes us to a nice bistro and he recommends that we taste the grilled chicken. The truth is, I’m not very hungry, but I’m not going to show that I’m disturbed in front of his girlfriend, so I eat with a hearty appetite.
“It’s great to see that rumors didn’t affect your appetite.”
“Matt,” protests Elina, but I don’t give her the chance to defend me. I can manage by myself.
“Let him talk. I’m used to it. It would be good, however, if you’d tell me what you’re scheming.”
“You said you needed someone to sort out your reputation. What better way than being seen with my fiancée and me?”
“Unless they now think that I’m after a rich man with a fiancée.”
Elina bursts out with laughter.
“I didn’t consider that,” chuckles Matt. “Do you think I should change my plans?”
“I don’t think you should help me at all,” I whistle, although deep down I’m happy he took the time to defend me.
On the other hand, there are two sides to every coin, and I’m not very happy about being forced to have lunch with his girlfriend. If only she were a bit unfriendly, then I’d feel less guilty about disliking her.EXCERPT 2
When we enter the room and I see Lisa, who has arrived despite my prayers, I feel immediately threatened. How is it possible that photos don’t do justice to someone? I always look prettier in photos because I try to take my picture when I’m at my best. But this girl, if in photos she’s beautiful, in real life she is … stunning. I feel Matt’s hand tighten on my shoulder.
“Matt!” She pounces on him and kisses him on the lips. I didn’t know that an ex-fiancée had the right to do that.
“Lisa, nice to see you again.” Matt puts his hand on her arm, which I don’t think is necessary either. “Erin.” I’m not sure that the way he says my name indicates any particular attachment between us. “This is Lisa. Lisa, this is Erin.” Not my girlfriend, nothing, just Erin.
I take her hand and I am of course delighted to meet her. “Matt told me all about you.”
“Everything? Really?” She turns towards Matt to play the couple who has secrets to share. Maybe I don’t go out with men often, but I’ve seen so many romantic movies that I know all the ruses an ex-girlfriend can use.
“Oh, I’m certain that even if he didn’t already tell me everything, he will sooner or later. Matt can’t resist my interrogation methods.” If she wants to play this game, I can, too.

Christopher Bunn graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois with a Master’s degree in TV/Film Production. After several years working in the UK on dramas and documentaries, he worked for Big Idea Productions in Illinois, producing children’s DVDs and video games. It was there, during a snowy Chicago winter, that he began writing stories. Finally succumbing to the allure of better weather, he moved back to his home state of California where he has been ever since, writing books, film scripts, composing music, and working on a farm.In addition to his time in media production, he has spent many years working around the globe in various countries. He ran a post office in a United Nations refugee camp in Thailand, done construction in the Amazon, worked in an orphanage in the highlands of Ethiopia, caught malaria in Kenya, done post-hurricane demolition in Hawaii, and worked the nightshift in a shoe factory in Israel.

My fascination with writing started at a young age. I remember in school filling up the unused portion of spiraled notebooks with abstract ideas and stories. One thing that I am happy for is that I have always been a very lucid dreamer. Having very detailed dreams, a lot of my ideas and characters come from dreams I have had that I wrote down. It is almost as if I get to work on my favorite hobby when I am not even awake.When I am writing I always imagine in my head what my characters would look like in real life. Visualizing how they would sound, and interact with the events unfolding in their life I really try to delve deeply into what they are thinking and feeling. I cannot put into words how much I enjoyed publishing my first two books online.
My writing style is one that creates a complex plot, but one that melds together and all its parts make sense. Detailing characters feelings and living through their viewpoint, at a mysterious pace, revealing little by little just how everything fits together keeps a story interesting throughout the entire adventure.

Shulamit Hartal was blessed with a multi-faceted creativity that expressed itself in sculpture, journalism, teaching and fiction. Born in Israel in 1937, in her early twenties she married Dov Hartal, (who had been her childhood sweetheart) and studied journalism at the Advanced School for Law and Economics in Tel Aviv, the institute that would become the University of Tel Aviv. Her journalistic skills were put to use when she worked for seven years at Israel’s leading daily newspaper, Haaretz, both as a journalist – with a weekly column for the youth supplement of Haaretz on art and on handicrafts -as well as reviewing new consumer products and appliances. She also worked in the archive at Haaretz. The weekly articles on crafts for youth were collected in two volumes and became the books: “Home Boutique”, “With Your Own Hands” (Karni Publications, in Hebrew).
Soon after the couple spent five years in the United States, where Shulamit studied sculpture at the University of Minesota, and Dov, a chemical engineer, completed his Ph.D in Food Science and Biotechnology.
On their return to Israel, Shulamit pursued further studies in sculpture at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv.
Meanwhile, the couple had three children, a boy and two girls. Both daughters both showed artistic leanings and eventually went to art school, to The Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design (Jerusalem) and The Shenkar College of Engineering and Design (Tel Aviv).
Yet despite her diverse interests and talents, Shulamit Hartal’s true love remained sculpture, which provided an outlet for her tremendous creativity. She developed a method of sculpture using wire mesh, which narrows the gap between a concept and its realization in three dimensions. Terming this innovation the “Hartal Method”, Shulamit wrote a book outlining its use, Kal VeChomer (1993, available through the Tel Aviv Museum store).
For over thirty years she was a much-loved and charismatic teacher of sculpture, not only deploying considerable people skills, but passing on the Hartal method to some two thousand students. From around the world, and over the course of decades, many of her students remained regularly in touch until her untimely death in November 2013.
“Finding the Grain” was Hartal’s fifth book and first novel (apart from the craft books and the book on the Hartal Method, there was also a charming book for children, inspired by her grandchildren, “Curly Eyal”). The idea for Finding the Grain, (which in the original Hebrew was titled Tarnegolet Iveret, “Blind Chicken”) was sparked off when Hartal literally stumbled over a pile of psychology books at the local recycling center. Later, in what was to be the last year of her life, Hartal devoted herself to this heavily auto-biographical novel. At first she worked intensively and in the final months, feverishly.
