Owen H Lewis had his heart set on a career in the creative arts from an early age and, after gaining a degree in English Literature in 1998, he broke into film and television.

I travelled to Israel and lived on a Kibbutz for eight months, working in avocado fields and drinking cheap vodka. I sold pots and pans and educational toys in Africa for a while and almost got shot in Zimbabwe. I did a brief stint as a cartoonist somewhere and an even briefer stint as reporter somewhere else. Somehow, and maybe by accident, I ended up in law school and became a lawyer. I did that for almost a decade.

These days I’m back to writing stories. A calling I ignored for far too long. I now live in New Zealand, and with a wife and kids, and a dog, I’ll be staying put for the foreseeable future.

On September 24, 1513, Leonardo da Vinci recorded in his journal that he was departing for Rome, via Florence. We know that sometime after December 1511 he left Milan and moved to the Villa Melzi in Vaprio d Adda, a small town on a river about a half-day’s ride east. Here he and his bottega were hosted comfortably by the Count of Vaprio, father of Francesco Melzi, Leonardo’s youngest apprentice.

Eight years previously, Leonardo had been residing temporarily in his native Florence, where he was commissioned to paint a portrait of a wealthy merchant’s young wife. This portrait, called La Gioconda and known to us as Mona Lisa, exercised a strange hold on the artist. He refused to finish it or surrender it to its rightful owner, keeping it close, as one would a mistress. Apparently, this obsession baffled everyone who knew of it.

Here’s the bottom line… I love to laugh, I love to drink and I love to eat.

I also love writing.

As a child I had stories going through my head. It took me a long time to realise I should write them down, therefore clearing my mind. Little did I know another one would pop up!

I wanted to be painter since I was a child. I was told, while being assessed at the end of my art foundation, I should go into drama or be a stand-up comedian. I’m short, so even if I did ‘stand up’ it’d be hard to see me and I realise that was their way of telling me I was rubbish at art.

I’ve worked in various jobs and I have been extremely lucky to do what I wanted to do… though I have a habit of changing my mind every so often.

If you want something, go for it. The only thing holding you back is you. You only have one life so don’t say ‘if only’ say ‘well at least I tried’.

Writing, like anything creative, is an exposure. Not everyone likes what you write, what you say or what you think… but some people do. That’s my focus. On the people who like what you write… what I write.

Bob and Connie were just eighteen and sixteen when they met and started walking to work together. They got to know each other well enough in the year and a half before World War II started to stay together through the uncertainties and separation of war. They married when Bob was on leave in 1945.

The two were just embarking on their adult lives when war began, dramatically changing their expectations and experiences. This is their story, or rather how two stories became one, despite the intervening six years of danger and hardship.

Connie joined the Land Army to work on a farm, while Bob went to France with the Royal Artillery. He was evacuated from Dunkirk; and then spent the rest of the war as a gunner on merchant shipping, which took him around the world and into some tight spots.

Connie’s story is a fascinating account of life in and around a farm, where she was the only woman doing farm work. She became expert at driving a tractor and bulldozer, which contrasted greatly from her previous office job.

Bob’s historical account tells of his travels and experiences during the war. He was attacked from the air and torpedoed by a submarine. He sailed across the Atlantic, to Iceland and around the Mediterranean, whilst serving on fishing boats, tankers and munitions ships.

Both accounts provide personal insights into public events during the war years.
