Oren was born in Tel Aviv in 1950 to a mother who was a school teacher and a father who was a mechanical engineer. His parents met when his father was wounded as a heavy equipment semi- trailer driver in Her Majesty Royal Engineers forces in the Western Desert of North Africa and was hospitalized in military hospital in Beirut, where his mother served as a nurse.
Oren served in the Israel Defense Forces for eight years, first in the Artillery Corps where he fought as a Battery Commander in the 1973 Yom Kippur War, and later as an intelligence analyst in the General headquarters, in the rank of Major.
After the historic visit of President Sadat of Egypt in Jerusalem in 1977, he decided to move to Government Service. He joined the Foreign Ministry and was assigned to the Department of Normalization of Relations with Egypt, where he had the privilege not only to meet Sadat, but also to be on a team that gave back to a parallel Egyptian team 16 Bedouin tribes, 16 schools, 16 infirmaries, copper mines, two shrines and one pyramid. Years later he went back to take part in the fragile peace process as a Political Advisor and representative of the Prime Minister (Shamir and Rabin) in peace conferences and meetings in Cairo, Hague, Tokyo and Moscow.
Amongst other posts, Oren served as a consul in New York City. He was later a consul in Boston- where the plot of his book “Dancing Bear” is taking place, a minister in the embassy in Washington and Ambassador in Nigeria. He has a Ph.D. in Political Science and teaching now on Diplomacy, Intelligence and Spins. Who is Kadashan?

Even though he might have a smidgen of Swedish in him, Kadashan is a Tlingit Indian to the core. He is my father.
Even though he now lives in Yakutat, Kadashan has roots that come from other parts of Southeast Alaska as well, particularly from Sitka and Wrangell. His grandmother, Elizabeth Kadashan, who married a man from Sitka, named him after her father, John Kadashan, whose roots comes from Wrangell.
He was born in Sitka. That’s where his mother, Stella Johnson, met his father, John J. James, while they were attending Sheldon Jackson Boarding School. After his mother graduated from high school in 1936 they eloped. He was born on February 4, 1937. When he was six months old his father drowned in a hunting accident. About a year later his mother remarried, however the marriage did not last. About a year later his mother moved to her home town of Yakutat. Here she married his step father, John J. Adams.
The name Kadashan was given to him by his paternal grandmother. She named him after her father, John Kadashan who, later in his life, was the chief of a Tlingit group from Wrangell. Kadashan means man the elder.
Kadashan’s first formal education was received in Yakutat. His high school years were split between Holland High School in Holland, Michigan, and Mount Edgecumbe High School, a boarding school established by the federal government for Native Alaskans near Sitka. His graduate work was obtained from Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka (1961-1963), and later at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah (1976-1979).
As a youngster Kadashan learned from a Tlingit Indian friend, Peter Harry, how to express himself with oil colors. From that point on he taught himself how to be an artist. “He started me with oils,” he explains. “When I was in high school I started experimenting with water colors.” His short stories have been published in the Alaska Native Magazine (ANM) and the Horizons Magazine. The ANM has used his water colors to illustrate his stories. In the second printing of these stories the illustrations are reproductions in black and white of his water and acrylic paintings. He has also written for the Alaska Magazine and the Alaskan Southeaster Magazine.
In 1992 he self-published a collection of short stories: THIS IS YAKUTAT, and in 1994 published his first novel WHEN RAVEN CRIES. His stories are local color. He takes a slice of life from the lifestyle, culture, history and tradition of the Tlingit people from his community, and attempts to develop a plot which will keep the interest of the reader. To inform and entertain are the objectives for his writings particularly about the culture, history and tradition of his people, the Tlingit Indians of Alaska. In 1993 he began writing articles for the Tundra Times, a statewide Alaska Native publication, and soon after was commissioned to write a monthly column for the Juneau Empire, the major newspaper for the Capital City of Alaska.
From 1992 to 2006, my father served as the elected president of the Yakutat Tlingit tribe. It was during his tenure there that he learned about tribal governments and their relationship with the federal government. He participated in countless numbers of meetings and conferences where he learned from tribal and government leaders about tribal issues and problems of the day. As he gained more experience he wrote articles where they were published in his column called Kadashan’s’ Corner in the Juneau Empire. Robert G. This was a time in his life when he was searching for his identity—should he take the time to discover his ancestral roots, or give up his identity in favor of a western education? In “Something to Give”, set on a fishing camp on the Aalseix River, newlyweds know love, but don’t know how to express it. High school graduates in “The Tale of Three Seal Hunters” are faced with the decision of whether they should join the military or stay home and relearn their hunting skills.
In “Lifeblood” we learn how three siblings are faced with the responsibility of catching enough salmon to sell the last few days of a bad commercial fishing season to pay for a heart bypass operation for their mother. It is in the fall and the weather is changing to the fall storms. The resiliency of these youngsters is due to the way they had been raised by their parents and grandparent, something that is missing in America today.
The challenges the characters face in these stories are everyday situations one would find anywhere in the world: Young love, health concerns, financial security, human longings, grief and personal conflicts are subjects that the author tries to share with the world about a small Alaskan settlement. They also face the challenge of taking advantage, or not so, about the short summer salmon runs— If they succeed then they can have resources to sustain their lives; if they don’t meet their goals the long winter months will be very lean. This was a time in his life when he was searching for his identity—should he take the time to discover his ancestral roots, or give up his identity in favor of a western education? In “Something to Give”, set on a fishing camp on the Aalseix River, newlyweds know love, but don’t know how to express it. High school graduates in “The Tale of Three Seal Hunters” are faced with the decision of whether they should join the military or stay home and relearn their hunting skills.
In “Lifeblood” we learn how three siblings are faced with the responsibility of catching enough salmon to sell the last few days of a bad commercial fishing season to pay for a heart bypass operation for their mother. It is in the fall and the weather is changing to the fall storms. The resiliency of these youngsters is due to the way they had been raised by their parents and grandparent, something that is missing in America today.
The challenges the characters face in these stories are everyday situations one would find anywhere in the world: Young love, health concerns, financial security, human longings, grief and personal conflicts are subjects that the author tries to share with the world about a small Alaskan settlement. They also face the challenge of taking advantage, or not so, about the short summer salmon runs— If they succeed then they can have resources to sustain their lives; if they don’t meet their goals the long winter months will be very lean. Who is Kadashan?

Even though he might have a smidgen of Swedish in him, Kadashan is a Tlingit Indian to the core. He is my father.
Even though he now lives in Yakutat, Kadashan has roots that come from other parts of Southeast Alaska as well, particularly from Sitka and Wrangell. His grandmother, Elizabeth Kadashan, who married a man from Sitka, named him after her father, John Kadashan, whose roots comes from Wrangell.
He was born in Sitka. That’s where his mother, Stella Johnson, met his father, John J. James, while they were attending Sheldon Jackson Boarding School. After his mother graduated from high school in 1936 they eloped. He was born on February 4, 1937. When he was six months old his father drowned in a hunting accident. About a year later his mother remarried, however the marriage did not last. About a year later his mother moved to her home town of Yakutat. Here she married his step father, John J. Adams.
The name Kadashan was given to him by his paternal grandmother. She named him after her father, John Kadashan who, later in his life, was the chief of a Tlingit group from Wrangell. Kadashan means man the elder.
Kadashan’s first formal education was received in Yakutat. His high school years were split between Holland High School in Holland, Michigan, and Mount Edgecumbe High School, a boarding school established by the federal government for Native Alaskans near Sitka. His graduate work was obtained from Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka (1961-1963), and later at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah (1976-1979).
As a youngster Kadashan learned from a Tlingit Indian friend, Peter Harry, how to express himself with oil colors. From that point on he taught himself how to be an artist. “He started me with oils,” he explains. “When I was in high school I started experimenting with water colors.” His short stories have been published in the Alaska Native Magazine (ANM) and the Horizons Magazine. The ANM has used his water colors to illustrate his stories. In the second printing of these stories the illustrations are reproductions in black and white of his water and acrylic paintings. He has also written for the Alaska Magazine and the Alaskan Southeaster Magazine.
In 1992 he self-published a collection of short stories: THIS IS YAKUTAT, and in 1994 published his first novel WHEN RAVEN CRIES. His stories are local color. He takes a slice of life from the lifestyle, culture, history and tradition of the Tlingit people from his community, and attempts to develop a plot which will keep the interest of the reader. To inform and entertain are the objectives for his writings particularly about the culture, history and tradition of his people, the Tlingit Indians of Alaska. In 1993 he began writing articles for the Tundra Times, a statewide Alaska Native publication, and soon after was commissioned to write a monthly column for the Juneau Empire, the major newspaper for the Capital City of Alaska.
From 1992 to 2006, my father served as the elected president of the Yakutat Tlingit tribe. It was during his tenure there that he learned about tribal governments and their relationship with the federal government. He participated in countless numbers of meetings and conferences where he learned from tribal and government leaders about tribal issues and problems of the day. As he gained more experience he wrote articles where they were published in his column called Kadashan’s’ Corner in the Juneau Empire. Robert G. Elise is really afraid now, and she covers her face with the blanket! Her heart beat goes crazy, her mind is creating all kinds of scenarios! Are those steps she`s hearing on the carpet? Is that a person`s breath she`s sensing approaching her bed? Eventually, those steps are going away but Elise hears another noise – just as when somebody takes a seat on the couch. At this point in my life, I’ve lost a number of friends and family members. Some of them passed away unexpectedly.My mother went into the hospital in Kansas for a routine complaint, was talking and joking when I spoke with her on the phone from California that evening. Her voice was strong, spirits high. She passed away that night.
I had a pal, Mike. We didn’t see each other very often but his voice was often in my head. I learned from a Facebook friend that Mike had passed away a few months before.
And there have been others. So many passings, and so much left unsaid. What I wouldn’t give for a few minutes with each of these people, a few precious minutes to say goodbye, to tell them what they meant to me, maybe to reveal a secret, ask forgiveness, ask them a question.
I thought about writing a story in which people could do that, visit “one last time” with the deceased.
I quickly decided that it wouldn’t work. Some people–the Mark Twains of the world, for instance, the movie stars, the rock idols–would spend all of eternity visiting those who wanted to see them after they passed.
But it could work the other way around. It could work if the deceased were able to visit the living, the people they chose. And then I thought: What if they only got one? A single “one last time” visit. Who would they visit, and why? The concept seemed rich with dramatic possibilities, some of them warm and fuzzy, others terrifying or humorous. The more I thought about it, the deeper I fell in love with the idea.
So One Last Time was born.

Written by Janique Muckelvene, JaTawny Muckelvene Chatmon and Jamecia Muckelvene Jackson; three sisters intent on inspiring young children everywhere to use their imagination, dream and wonder. Background:
This book was created in dedication to their father, James “Rudy” Muckelvene. When he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010, JaTawn’y daughter (who her father nicknamed RuRu after himself) & her grandfather built a very close bond. The two were inseparable. Each of his grandchildren had their special moments and times with him throughout the years and this time it was RuRu’s turn. Unfortunately, on December 20, 2010, he lost his battle to Sarcomatoid Carcinoma of the Prostate.A year after his passing, JaTawny and her mother happened upon a magnificent deer in the Free People©showroom in Tyson’s Corner Mall. Being collectors of all things awesome, JaTawny insisted that she must own this yarn wrapped, brightly adorned, iron deer. Her mother encouraged her to purchase what was once a display piece in the store that now had a “for sale” sign around his neck; and before you knew it, the 150 lb. deer was hers! Without thought, she named him Rudy. With deer in tow, JaTawny now needed to come up with an “excuse” to give her husband as to why she was bringing home yet another “exquisite” treasure! During their 45 minute drive home, she thought up the idea to create a project using RuRu (her daughter) and Rudy. She didn’t know exactly what the project would be about, she just knew it would be something about RuRu & Rudy going on adventures! She spoke to her photography rep at the time who came up with the idea that it should be a Christmas book! And so it began…
JaTawny & her children created each backdrop using cardboard paper and various arts and craft supplies as her agent came up with first parts of the original story. They began pitching the story to a few publishers with no great offers and after some time, the two split ways and RuRu & Rudy was shelved.
JaTawny began to grow tired of chasing photography jobs for pay and decided to focus on photography projects that meant something to her. In the midst of it all, for extra cash while following her dreams, she sold Rudy the deer on craigslist. Shortly after, regret set in. She decided she wanted to move forward with completing this project in dedication to her father and enlisted her two sisters to help her create a new story to go with the images she’d created of RuRu & Rudy!
The sisters finished the story, got it published and are hoping this will become a holiday favorite for families year after year!

Children’s Fashion Photographer and Author JaTawny Muckelvene Chatmon has earned a reputation for taking captivating and ethereal images of free spirited children (usually under the age of 12). She’s hopelessly fascinated by capturing “what is real”, and “what is surreal”.JaTawny was born in Japan and grew up an ‘army brat’. Upon returning to the United States, JaTawny immersed herself in her aunt’s local theater company. It was during those impressionable years that her passion for the arts developed. This life is not forever. Equations universe (Iceberg Publishing). He claims that, after two non-fiction books, he’s
having the time of his life bringing new stories and characters to life!At present, John lives in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada with Anne, his bride of forty-one years.
They have three children and three grandchildren. In December of 2013, John and Anne
founded Fiora Books for the express purpose of publishing John’s books. After four decades of
marriage, they decided to become business partners as well.
