As a child I had stories going through my head. It took me a long time to realise I should write them down, therefore clearing my mind. Little did I know another one would pop up!
I wanted to be painter since I was a child. I was told, while being assessed at the end of my art foundation, I should go into drama or be a stand-up comedian. I’m short, so even if I did ‘stand up’ it’d be hard to see me and I realise that was their way of telling me I was rubbish at art.
I’ve worked in various jobs and I have been extremely lucky to do what I wanted to do… though I have a habit of changing my mind every so often.
If you want something, go for it. The only thing holding you back is you. You only have one life so don’t say ‘if only’ say ‘well at least I tried’.
Writing, like anything creative, is an exposure. Not everyone likes what you write, what you say or what you think… but some people do. That’s my focus. On the people who like what you write… what I write.

An experience that stands out in my mind happened in a German restaurant. We were young men from the United States, living in Europe without a lot of exposure. Our knowledge of culture limited because we had not seen or done many things before coming to Germany.
Bobby and I went to a German restaurant to eat dinner. We had gone there once before, and this time we brought our friend, Shorty with us. The hostess seated us and gave us the menus. While Shorty looked over the menu, Bobby and I had already decided what we wanted to order, so we placed our menus on the table. Noticing this, Shorty said that he would have whatever we were ordering.
This restaurant was very upscale. Each table had a white tablecloth on it with a beautiful flower arrangement in the center. The settings consisted of plates, silverware, glasses, and white cloth napkins. When the waitress came to take our order, we all ordered the chicken dinner, just as before when Bobby and I had eaten there. Each dinner included a large piece of chicken, baked potato, salad, bread roll, and dessert. Except for the dessert, all the dinner items were serve to us at the same time. When we finished eating our dinner, our plates were removed.
The waitress returned to our table carrying several small plates and bowls half filled with water with a lemon slice floating on top. She placed the small plates in front of us and set a bowl on each small plate. I asked Bobby if he wanted my lemon soup. He had enjoyed it so much the last time we were at the restaurant.
Shorty began to laugh and said, “Let me get this straight. Are you telling me that Bobby ate the contents of that bowl the last time you were here?” I told Shorty that not only did he eat his soup, he also ate my serving. I described how Bobby took his bread and tore it into little pieces and placed them in the soup and used a spoon to finish eating his soup.
At that point Shorty had started to convulse from laughing. We laughed along with Shorty, not knowing why he was laughing. When Shorty regained his composure, he told us that we were really ignorant country people. He explained that the bowls were call finger bowls because they were use to dip your fingers into after eating chicken to remove the grease. Then the bowls would be removed, and our waitress would bring us dessert and place it on the small plates.
Well, we did not know anything about finger bowls in Arkansas and Mississippi, where Bobby and I came from. We continued laughing after finding out that Bobby had eaten finger bowl water, thinking it was soup. That was the last time we ate at that place

I’m an artist & writer living surrounded by wildlife in Connecticut with my talented artist/gardener wife of 60 years. For viewers with enormous patience my bio follows. For those lacking the necessary staying power, I advise you to skip it.I was born in New York City in 1928. My father had flown airplanes made of canvas and sticks in WWl, in France, while my mother had sung and danced in vaudeville. Everything was fine until the Crash of 29. What I recall is a series of one-bedroom apartments and hard times, but my older sister and I had no complaints since this was simply the way things were, and many were worse off than we were, some of whom we occasionally took in for a week or two. People shared back then.
As a child I was always drawing with pencil and crayon, and painting with oils on cardboard. But most important at the time, I was a street kid along with hundreds of others and loved it. I shined shoes, sold newspapers, carried wet wash for Wong’s laundry, delivered groceries, then worked in a ping-pong paddle factory and various warehouses. For a few months in 1945 I served below decks in the engine room in the U.S. Maritime Service, before segueing that winter into the Army Engineers, which consisted of building things, blowing up things, and running machinery.
I worked as an accounting clerk for a steamship line, shared driving big rigs interstate (first trip about 3800 miles, no super highways), then as a wire lather (way up) constructing high-rise apartment buildings. In 1949 I began using my G.I Bill: Fine art at the Art Student’s league of New York, and in 1950 at the Workshop School of Advertising and Editorial Design and Illustration, where I met my future, and very talented, wife, Lorraine. After one semester she left to attend The Parson’s School of Design. When my G.I. Bill expired I returned to the Art Student’s League at night, paying my way for a couple of years by running elevators, including the “tower car,” in the Wall Street Bank that was the model for the one I used in my novel, Three At The Center Of Rage. Yes, as my character Charlie did, I had occasion to climb from the boardroom to the bank’s roof at 2 or 3 in the morning, absent Charlie’s rage, of course, to admire the impressive view.
I designed record album covers but never went into advertising or illustration. Rather, having seen my wife’s work in decorative product design, I followed suit working on staff as a designer for 3 companies before, in 1963, creating my own design studio in midtown Manhattan, eventually becoming a consultant designer and design director for a number of corporations. Meanwhile we had two beautiful daughters, and by 1973, as Ryan Associates, Lorraine became my full time partner. While all this was going on I attended a writer’s workshop, at night, at what was then known as the New School for Social Research. As the years passed our daughters provided us with 5 wonderful grandchildren.
Retiring to Connecticut, Lorraine and I returned to fine art. Lorraine has shown in galleries and won many awards in juried shows. I focused on wildlife/nature in my paintings, then out of curiosity bought a computer, tinkered with it and studied web development at Western Connecticut University. I produced two websites (still on view): http://www.RyanArtDuo.com which is a gallery of our paintings, and http://www.MartinJRyan.com which also hosts my older site: http://www.UncleSammySays.com a decidedly left-of-center blog featuring my political rants and cartoons. Born and raised in Bristol, England. I spent my adult life in business, the majority of that time marketing cars. I eventually owned the largest Saab specialist in the world, before a divorce put an end to that part of my life.This led me to leave Bristol to live halfway up a mountain in the Welsh valleys, start a part time six year English Literature course at Bristol University, and attend creative writing classes in Cardiff.

I was born and educated in England and began writing after moving to Spain in 1989. “Vapour Trails in the Blue” is set in “Tolmuner” on the Costa del Sol, which is not unlike Nerja, where I lived for ten years before moving along the coast to La Herradura. Nerja was a much smaller town when I first went there and all the foreign residents, including some colourful, below-retirement-age characters living there at the time, all knew each other, although any resemblance to these last mentioned and the characters in my novel is purely coincidental, as is any perceived resemblance of Nerja to “Tolmuner”!Although in my youth I was influenced by the “beat” writers, like Burroughs and Kerouac, the main formative influence on me, certainly regarding my style, derived from mid 20th century English writers, like Aldous Huxley, Cyril Connolly, Waugh, Orwell, Graham Greene, and also Malcolm Lowry, and American writers like Scott Fitzgerald and contemporary American writers of the time, like Gore Vidal, Norman Mailer, Joseph Heller and Philip Roth. More recent fiction I have read and enjoyed include “Birdsong,” by Sebastian Faulks, “One Day ” by David Nicholls and “The Corrections,” by Jonathan Franzen. I like to think of my work as “literary fiction” and hope it might bear some comparison with the work of some of these writers. I also enjoy biography and diaries, and as a diarist myself I have published a volume of diaries kept during the writing of “Vapour Trails in the Blue.”
Set in the Nineteen-nineties and ending just after the turn of the millennium (at a time when I was younger and when living abroad perhaps still seemed like more of an adventure than now), the climax of “Vapour Trails in the Blue” takes place at the Pamplona “running of the bulls” San Firmin fiesta and there is an epilogue set in America. Although “literary fiction,” the novel has some pretty graphic sexual episodes in it, and with murder and mystery in it too I would be quite happy for it to also be described as a “sizzling summer read,” but like Fitzgerald’s “Tender is the Night,” “Vapour Trails in the Blue” is really a romantic story which I hope you are going to enjoy reading.
