I always had a yearning to create something I could claim as my own. I spent my childhood developing cartoon projects I’d later turn into potential animations, or perhaps even greater things, I dreamed. Because I was too young to understand how to use photo/video editing programs, I was left with no choice but to focus on the story of my cartoons instead, which led to the development of my writing ability.

Now I engage in several things. Most of my animations are owned by a pseudonym I’ve used online for several years now (which I will probably never reveal). For everything else, including photography, I am known for it under my name.

Fred and Sharon, his wife of over fifty years, spend their time actively pursuing the busy life of a retired couple. She had a career in the food industry and he’s retired from his career in heavy construction.

As a child, McCallum always wanted to write a book. He scribbled in notebooks, drew pictures, and lived largely in a world of make-believe. Into this fertile field a seed was planted. Notebooks began to fill and they didn’t stop. It was a soaring waltz with words among the silvery clouds and he loved it. He was thirteen.

McCallum discovered the Institute of Children’s Literature and enrolled in their writing course, Writing for Children and Teenagers. For their second, advanced, course, he rewrote those bursting notebooks. Now McCallum is eighteen and working on the sequel, and enjoying every minute of it knowing that finally, it’s real. It’s not just a pile of notebooks anymore, it’s ‘A Hole in the Ice.’

McCallum still draws and occasionally attacks an unfortunate piece of fabric with a sewing machine.
