I often say “Life is GREAT”. When I do, people will look at me funny and I can almost hear them thinking “What has this guy been smoking?”

When someone asks me how I am, a favorite response of mine is “always good!” Once again, I get strange looks, often followed by comments like “you must really have a good life if you say that” or “is that even possible?”

I don’t say those things just to make conversation or in an effort to convince myself that it’s true. I say them because that is honestly how I feel, and how I experience life.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m not saying that I don’t have ups and downs, good times as well as bad. I do. That’s normal, every human on our planet has them. (I don’t know about the other planets) What I am however saying is that happiness and being excited about life is both a choice and a state of mind.

In my teenage years, I was very shy and hardly spoke to anyone. If I think back today, there is actually very little that I remember from my school days. At the same time, I loved reading. My mother would take us to the public library once a week, and we were all allowed to borrow three books. By the next visit, I had not only read my own and my two siblings’ books, but had also checked if my mother had something that I could read. This meant that I read an average of nine to twelve books per week.

If I was interested in any subject, it was logical to find a book with the information and learn from it. I still remember “Popular Mechanics” and the hours of fun I had exploring all the fascinating subjects this great series explored. Another way for me to learn was to take things apart to see how they worked. More often than not, there were ‘spares’ left over after I had put the items back together, but I could normally get them to work again. My mother wasn’t too happy with the spare parts, so I learnt not to tell her about them.

This love of books and learning has stayed with me throughout my life. Computers weren’t around during my school days, but when I ‘discovered’ them, I taught myself how to program using books. What started as a hobby became a career, and I soon ran my own software development company – not bad for someone without any formal training in computers or programming!

When my kids were still at home, I read Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and later The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families by Stephen Covey.

These books were great for me, as in them, I finally found the principles that I could teach others.

This also led to me writing my own personal mission statement:

“I will help people become the best that they can be.”

The reason I’m telling you this is simply to assure you that the stuff I write about is not some theoretical mumbo jumbo. I have used the methods and seen the results – they work! Fortunately, I am hardheaded and thick skinned enough not to listen to the people around me that say something can’t be done.

Amongst many other things, I am a certified Life Coach. The very first session that I do with my clients teaches them how to set effective goals. Time and again I see a big change happening. There is no bigger satisfaction than seeing when someone suddenly realizes: “I can do this!”

Make no mistake – reaching your goals and slowly designing and building the life that you want is hard work. There are no short cuts. There is no easy way. This is not some magic formula that will change your life overnight.

BUT …

If you are willing to put in the effort, you can make your dreams come true.

I’m a fifty-something-young woman who lives on the Central Coast, an hour’s drive north of Sydney in Australia. I liked the idea of being in charge of my own creation.

Author’s Note: This book straddles a number of genres. At heart, it’s a detective story, a who-done-it mystery. And the hero is a hardboiled private eye steeped in noir motifs. Yet, this is modern crime suspense with a paranormal twist: what if real psychics were a part of everyday life? Genre-wise it gets slightly more complicated. A lot of psychic stories are told in a young adult/fantasy mode or in a hard paranormal mode. The Psychic Registry differs in that it’s first and foremost a noir detective series.

Another hallmark of this series is its unabashed raciness. This series was originally pitched to my editor as a take on erotic romance and that early emphasis informed the development of the main character and the nature of his psychic powers. Eventually, we agreed that the book was far more interesting as a detective story than as an erotic romance. Nonetheless, this story retains its sexually charged roots.

The second major element that survived this early incarnation was the wonderful fish-out-of-water character, Laurel Comfort. The prominent inclusion of Laurel’s POV not only facilitates a good portion of necessary world-building, but it leads to a truly satisfying, and yes, romantic subplot. Oh, yeah… and together they solve the murder.

This was a fun book to write. And I think that this world offers many more entertaining stories to come. So, rest assured, Nathan Miller (and many of his friends) will return soon.

I am a biomedical researcher who writes political and international thrillers, science fiction, narrated storybooks, and more. My stories often come from the raw emotional conflicts created and sustained by contemporary events around us. I strongly believe that the best stories challenge us, so I try to create art with a certain kind of relevant edge, at least as I experience it.

I was born in the Midwest. My mother worked as a clinical psychologist, and my father was a professor of Romance languages at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. In fact, his specialty, old Romance languages and their literature, is the source of the strange spelling of my middle name: “Erec.” It is an Old French spelling, taken from an Arthurian romance by Chrétien de Troyes written around 1170: Érec et Énide. Had my brother been a girl, he would have been named Enide. Instead, he’s Michael.

I have pursued diverse interests over the course of my life, including science, music, drama, and writing. My academic path focused on science, and I received a degree in physics from Oberlin College in 1992, and a PhD in biochemistry from Cornell University in 1999.
