The urge to write first struck when working on a newsletter at a youth encampment in the woods of northern Maine. It may have been the night when lightning flashed at sunset followed by northern lights rippling after dark. Or maybe it was the newsletter’s editor, a girl with eyes the color of the ocean. But he was inspired to write about the blurry line between reality and the fantastic.Using two fingers and lots of white-out, he religiously typed five pages a day throughout college and well into his twenties. Then life intervened. He paused to raise two sons and pursue a career, in the process becoming a well-known entrepreneur in the software industry, founding several successful companies. When he found time again to daydream, the urge to write returned.

Claire Smith is 46 and lives in Sale, South Manchester, England. Since childhood she loved to read and soon graduated from The Famous Five, through Swallows and Amazons to Jacqueline Suzanne and Jackie Collins in her teens. Brief Bio.I practiced internal medicine and nephrology (diseases of the kidney) in Berkeley, California for twenty-three years and served as chief of the department of medicine and family practice.
In 1995, I retired and set sail with my wife Dorlis and Furina, the cat. We cruised Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Canada, and then cruised the US and Canada in a Nordic Tug.
I have twelve published novels and one non-fiction book, I Love My Doctor, But… We are back on land beautiful Grass Valley, California.

My name is Isra. I am one of two remaining angels. God vanished and Lucifer threw open Hell’s gate, unleashing his macabre horde on Earth. Fiery fissures collapsed cities and rural areas alike, the very ground roiling like a stormy sea of unbearable heat. Angels fell like burning rain from the sky, as they tried to repel the attack and protect humankind. Twisted foul demons poured from the fissures, an unending torrent of misery that corrupted all they touched. Monstrous jaws bit and tore tirelessly until the rivers flowed with blood. We failed.
Earth fell into ruin, its oceans and rivers drying into parched wastelands and its survivors left despondent. Most despaired so intensely that they embraced the demons, seeking refuge from anyone. Desperate for water, humans began imbibing blood to sustain their thirst. I call those individuals blood drinkers. Food is sparse, and the animals are all but gone, eaten or slaughtered, so cannibalism is prevalent as well. The other angel, Hale, and I are all that are left. We gather remaining survivors that still hold their sanity and morals. We have separated them into two groups as a fail-safe into earthen grottoes that still miraculously contain fresh water. Hale believes that we may not have our wings any longer, but it is still our duty to protect mankind, that we must at least try to preserve the goodness of God’s children. I remain unconvinced. After all, God abandoned us all. Why should we continue to serve His will?
