About 50 Saints Everyone Should Know:This book is an introduction to fifty of the most notable saints of the Catholic Church. Most Catholics have grown up seeing images of these saints in their churches and religious institutions. And of course these saints have inspired some of the world’s greatest art. Many of these saints are also venerated by other Christian denominations and even non-Christians are familiar with the names of Peter, Francis of Assisi and Mary Magdalene, yet few of us could explain exactly who they were and why they are worth our attention. I hope that the stories shared here will introduce you to these amazing people.
A brief word about the process of canonization:
The Catholic Church teaches that everyone who lives a life of grace in union with God will receive the reward of eternal life and join the communion of saints. Everyone in heaven is considered a saint. The fifty saints in this book are among the thousands of “canonized” saints of the Church. They are recognized as models or intercessors and venerated because they lived lives of heroic virtue or remained faithful to God through martyrdom.
The canonization process is long and detailed. In brief, there are four steps: First, there is an investigation into the individual’s life by the local diocese. If that concludes well, the individual is designated a “Servant of God,” and all the files and research are sent off to the Vatican’s Congregation for the Causes of the Saints. In the next, second step, the Congregation begins reviewing this material while conducting its own investigation and welcoming any new information. Once a panel of theologians is satisfied, the individual is declared “Venerable.”
Up until this point the process resembles a congressional investigation, but now the supernatural element takes on importance because for the third step, beatification, the Congregation must credit a miracle (usually a healing) to the intercession of the candidate. Father Pat McCloskey recently described the process in St. Anthony Messenger, “A reported miracle must be examined by three teams that work independently: doctors, theologians and several cardinals. If they and the Pope agree that the cure was miraculous, the person can be officially declared Blessed. (If the person is acknowledged as a martyr, no miracle is needed at this stage.)” The individual can be celebrated locally and within his or her religious community.
A second miracle must occur after the beatification and it requires the same process of approval. At that time, the Congregation recommends canonization and the Pope proclaims that we have another great example to look to as proof that heaven is reachable for us all.

It is true that being born in India means born in the middle of a colorful spiritual carnival. Various kinds of spiritual influences repeatedly sow Holy impressions (Samskaras) in our minds. The very culture is designed to satisfy all material and spiritual needs of the human race. And not to mention the 5 million wandering Sadhus, in their vibrant costumes, who have never changed their ways and beliefs consistently since millenniums. Right from childhood I came across stories of Sadhus and Yogis wandering and meditating in the Himalayas. The very idea of Sadhus wandering and meditating in the Himalayas always fascinated me. Whenever I came across Sadhus I devotedly served them and revered them even if they were criminals in disguise. In my lifetime, destiny took me to all four corners of India where I have seen many Sadhus of various factions, philosophies, cultures and costumes; but most of the time my experiences were disappointing. I have seen Sadhus with dreadlocks who worship Shiva and there are bald Sadhus who worship Vishnu. Astonishingly not to mention the enigmatic Aghori Babas who live near crematoriums and feed on dead bodies. Also are the famous Naga Babas who allegedly hired unemployed boys to rally naked in the last Kumbha Mela to compensate for their dwindling numbers. But these Sadhus are not mere beggars. They are an army if gathered.
Sadhus come from all backgrounds and professions. Many of them were great worldly people before they renounced. Just because they are Sadhus now that does not mean that they are useless and ignorant. They have left behind a family, profession and history. If a lion gives up hunting that does not mean it has forgotten how to hunt. Nobody can forget swimming. These people have simply given up worldly life. But remember they can be dangerous too. Like an army they fought against the British oppression for independence. And not to mention many Sadhus in plain clothes, who are great and powerful people in disguise, supporting these Holy men; and the number can go up to 10 million because most of the wandering ones are not registered. A huge storm can burst if these people agitate. But the fact is these people are the peacekeepers and harmonizers of society.
What is a Sadhu? A Sadhu is a seeker of Truth; someone who is doing Sadhana (Spiritual seeking or pursuit). In ancient India it was customary for people to take to Sanyasa (Renunciation) in the 3rd stage of life when the children were big enough to handle the family and business. Sanyasa is preparation for Samadhi (Salvation), the final stage of any living creature on Earth. These are the keepers of religion and spirituality. I have been amazingly influenced by great spiritual souls of the past and I had always wished to find a real authentic Sadhu in this modern age. Fortunately I did not have to go to the Himalayas to find one. I found a great Sadhu, a Saint, a Yogi, a Philosopher right here in my tiny unknown town amidst the tropical forests of the Western Ghats. Although this doesn’t read like a romance novel, Abby’s at-times gritty, at times steamy, love for her husband knows no bounds, and his support and love for her is the red thread that holds the book’s chronological narrative together. Her two boys and their wide-eyed innocence and fear are incredibly poignant, and the author doesn’t hold back in describing the altogether too common, yet complex struggles of a family trying to cope with the fallout of a cancer diagnosis.
Abby writes in her Introduction about the loss of her hair (which the title of the book is based on): “In musing about possible titles for this book, I considered, What About the Hair Down There? At first, it seemed too bold for the front cover, but it was an honest question I had in my own mind as I started the “road trip” of my cancer treatment. Mine left, like all body hair, and returned with a new look – straight and dark, in contrast to the silver waves that grew back on top of my head. With enough length, some “curl” has returned. I’m not embarrassed to share this with others. It’s a fact. And this book isn’t ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’. It’s real life.”
