Is Oscar’s narrative, as a man, a valid one? Is his narrative of uniqueness, being exceptional, beating the odds, and enjoying no special advantages, authentic? Is it fair for a disabled man to compete with artificial limbs across both Olympic Games (able-bodied and disabled)?
By examining his intentionality, and responses to reasoned criticism (especially by the IAAF, writers such as Sokolove and McEvoy, and scientists such as Dr Ross Tucker) Book #3 in the Oscar Pistorius Murder Trial series seeks to shed light more specifically on Another Oscar.
Why would a disabled man seek to portray himself so aggressively as able-bodied? Not only on the athletics track, but off it. Are there consequences to the – sometimes constructive, sometimes painstaking, often exhausting – process of constantly manufacturing oneself (and one’s narrative) for public consumption?
Is there a cost to permanently projecting a persona of masculinity and invulnerability? Yes, if the rewards are great, the costs to the individual are proportionately great, because the compulsion to protect and conceal only increases. There are financial incentives involved in maintaining this fake diplomacy. But what sort of personal toll are we talking about? And who else is affected? And in the final analysis, how do we tell the real Oscar from the gleaming fake?
Ray Wicksell, Oscar’s former agent and manager, and a man who broke the 4 minute mile 24 times, shares his firsthand experiences with Oscar. Oscar and Wicksell’s two daughters trained together, and attended the same meets with Oscar. I’ve always loved the written word. For as long as I can remember, I read as much as I could, as often as I could. Cereal boxes, newspapers, product packaging. Ebony, Essence, and Jet Magazine. Billboards. I loved it all. I read the entire Fear Street series, as well as the Sweet Valley Books, from Twins and Friends through Sweet Valley High. Each week I’d bring 15 or 20 books home from the library, and read them all before the due date. Now, my mother owned a pristine, barely touched collection of Harlequin romance novels, and I was not to touch them under any circumstances. Well, as a teenager, you know what that meant. I read some of them, and got my first introduction to romance. When I was sixteen, I picked up my stepmother’s copy of Night Song, by Beverly Jenkins. The cover showed an obviously historical image of a black couple, against a beautiful backdrop, locked in a passionate embrace. With my love of history, I had to crack this book. He was introduced to zombie fiction by the film 28 Days Later. Everything was going fine, fun little suspense story, until Selena asked Mark if he’d been bitten or cut. When he said “uh”, and she instantly chopped him apart with a machete, David thought there might be something to these zombie stories people kept talking about. Turns out, they were right.
Every Christmas Eve he watches Die Hard and Lethal Weapon, because they’re the best Christmas movies ever made. Family, friends, and beating the crap out of the bad guy with your bare hands . . . what more do you want in a Christmas Story? BB Guns? Please, you’ll shoot your eye out.

Walk, run, cycle, listen, dream, live and write. That’s me, and you as well, I guess. We are all different enough to be intrigued, but similar enough to understand.
Now it’s a grey afternoon here in Britain, here I sit with a cup of hot chocolate, staring into the cloudy sky where a new worlds born every minute.
