I’ve always been big on pop culture and new media. In my novels I use those trends as the environment for telling my weird, cross genre paranormal thrillers in ways that parody our high pressure lives and the world we live in. It’s a bit of a throwback to my days as a newspaper columnist where I wrote about real people but tried to use their stories to mirror something of significance in the larger world.
My earliest influences were superhero comic books followed by sci-fi in my teen years and as I transitioned into adulthood, thrillers, mysteries, more sci-fi and the paranormal.
My writing crosses all of those genres – some call the writing style New Weird.
You might say I’m new weird as well. I am logically illogical. I have no problem accepting that Superman can fly but the vampire thing always bothered me. REALLY – where did vampires come from? I found none of the origin stories – including Bram Stoker’s – credible. In Late Bite I set the record straight and give the inside scoop on where vampires originate and exactly what their powers are. (HINT – Many vampires come from Canada). However, my guy keeps undermining my credibility by denying he’s a vampire, just the inspiration for the legends.
In Late Bite and my next novel, Gravity Games, to be released in late October, I present worlds that are very much like our own with all of the familiar problems and anxieties that beset us but with characters that are unlike any you’ve met in other novels.
I live in London Ontario with the love of my life Judy. I’m a crazy tree skier, a way over-the-hill fighter, a sometime photographer, a polyglot wanna-be, and occasionally a brilliant satirist.

Where do I start to tell you about me? I was born in New Mexico, which is something that surprises many people. Why does it surprise them? Well, I have lived in Georgia for many years, speak with a southern accent, and love my UGA Bulldogs. Most just assume that I was born and raised here. I almost attended that great university, but decided instead to join the US Navy, where I subjected myself to the rigors of Navy Nuclear Power training in Orlando, Florida, and Idaho Falls, Idaho (I know, why did the Navy have a training facility in Idaho, right?). Graduating from Nuke school landed me aboard USS Sandlance (SSN660), a Sturgeon class fast attack submarine. I am proud to say that I am a fully qualified submariner, and traveled above the Arctic Circle to earn my Bluenose certificate.After 3 and a half years aboard Sandlance, I transferred to recruiting duty in Americus, GA. While in Americus, I completed my undergraduate degree in Human Resources Management. I left the Navy soon after that, and began working in the civilian world. I was an electrician for a carpet manufacturer, worked for the world’s largest candy cane manufacturer, and then went to work in pharmaceutical manufacturing. I have since transitioned to the animal health world.
I have been married to the wonderful, adorable, and lovely Lana for over 25 years. It was Lana and her blog (shameless plug time: www.lanascooking.com) that inspired me to publish my books. I am father to my wonderful daughter Laura, and grandfather to Aidan and Maggie. All of them inspired a character in The Gemstone Chronicles.
Along with writing, I also enjoy gem hunting, gold prospecting, playing softball, playing golf (although I don’t play particularly well), and dabbling in woodworking. I tend to read a lot, and I have a wide range of interests – including quantum physics, science in general, submarines, and conspiracy theories.
The Gemstone Chronicles Book One: The Carnelian was my first novel. I have now has released Book Two: The Amethyst and Book Three: The Emerald! The final novel in the series, Book Four: The Ruby was released in early 2014.

About From Manhattan to Hollywood: The Stories of Chief White Eagle:I first met Chief White Eagle and his wife at the Trail of Courage festival in Rochester, Indiana, in 1993. He was signing photographs at a booth and visiting with attendees. I didn’t have a lot of time to visit with him, or even get to know him, as I was busy enjoying the festival and participating in the Indian dances, which are an exciting part of it. Then, too, a group of us was preparing to leave the next day on a ten-day caravan. We would be dedicating new markers and sites where our Potawatomi ancestors had camped as they traveled the Trail of Death, the 1838 forced removal of Chief Menominee’s village from near Plymouth, Indiana, to Sugar Creek Mission in Kansas. Thus, except for a brief meeting, I was barely aware of his existence.
Then in September of 1998, my husband and I flew to Rochester, Indiana, where I was invited to interview Baz, Chief White Eagle, and his wife, Bobbie Bear. This was the first time I’d actually sat down with him one-on-one. He stood strong and straight, a dignified gentleman. While possessing the facial characteristics of a member of the Mohawk Nation, high cheekbones, strong nose, sculptured forehead, he was also known for his deep “radio voice,” which he had practiced and perfected. He spoke beautiful English with a Canadian or English accent. As a young man, he had been very handsome; I found him even more so then.
A lot of things took place between 1998 and 2008, major illnesses and surgeries, before I was finally able to return for another interview. During the interval, Bobbie and their friend Shirley Willard recorded his stories, both on audiotape and on video, mailing them on to me for editing and inclusion in his autobiography. At the 2008 meeting I discovered another side of Chief White Eagle as well, one that isn’t as well known, perhaps, but one that more defines the man than Hollywood ever could, a side that has earned him my respect and admiration. I came to know him as a very wise individual, a man with a deep spirituality, shaped by experiences that only a very few could possibly imagine. A man who had seen much, encountered much, and been changed by these experiences.

In 1983 Eric got a job on a fluke with the San Diego Padres. He friend asked him if he would like to dance with him on the field. He agreed, and got the job as one of the Grounds Crew Dancers. He did that for about 4 years, but got replaced by Padre the base running dog. Three years later he got a job with Viking Pictures as their Promotional Director. His job was setting up meetings and finding sponsors, locations for the shootings.In 1998 and in 2003 when the Super Bowl came to San Diego, He teamed up with Ethnic Entertainment and Old Pro Sports. They throw huge parties including the celebrity golf tournament. To this day he still is involved in varies in town promotions and events. In 1999 he went in the direction of the Holistic Health and became a Massage Therapist. After graduating school he got a job at The San Diego Chiropractor office, be very quickly look for a new location. He then got a job at Paradise Point Resort and Spa. He had only worked there for a couple of months when he knew that he had been blessed with the gift to help others. Because of the recession in 2008, Eric got a second job as a massage therapist at Hotel Palomar.
In 2001 after loosing friends from 9-11, Eric wanted to to something to help donate to the Twin Tower Fund, so he started Americans Apparel. He made American flag Santa hats and sold them to various Mom and Pop stores, malls all up and down San Diego County as well as all the Henry Markets and the Swap Meets. He then went to Salt Lake city for the Winter Olympics, where he sold varies others hats and American products.
At the end of the Padre 2003 season Eric was tracked down to dance at the very last night game at Qualcomm Stadium. Petco Park was to be the new Baseball stadium. Many season ticket holders hadn’t seen Eric in about 15 years, and when he went on the field the crowd went so crazy that the owner’s daughter Jennifer Moores requested him for opening day at Petco Park.

Raised in the high mountains of scenic northern New Mexico, Cristael Bengtson grew up riding horseback in the mountain forests and meadows surrounding the small village of Pecos, where her parents owned and operated a small power and telephone company. Looking back over my life, I sometimes think that except for writing fiction most everything I’ve done since I graduated from high school in a suburb of Boston has been a surprise. Perhaps surprise is part of life for everyone.
I managed to finish undergraduate work at the University of Chicago, where the science and math requirements were difficult for me. I followed that with four years as an enlisted man in the American army. After that, I worked at a bank for twelve years where I learned about finance and city living.
Then came one of the biggest surprises of all. I spent five years studying at a Lutheran seminary in Indiana, with a year of internship in Florida. In 1987, I received a call to serve as pastor at a congregation in Sudbury, a mining city in mid-north Ontario. I retired from fulltime work in 2006 and moved to Toronto, where I live now.
