I have been trying to conquer the world since August of 1974. A bit lofty, perhaps; however, I am optimistic that the endeavor to overachieve might at least render results that are moderately beneficial, namely: get through today with a modicum of self-control. I figure if I get out of this with having conquered no more than myself, I’m well ahead.In the meantime, I am continually met with blessings beyond what I deserve. I have a beautiful wife and three amazing children. I realize this is cliché. I’ve not yet read anyone’s statement regarding his troll of a wife and hateful, evil spawn. Still, in my case, you’ll just have to take my word for it. I’ve done everything in my power to lose their love and respect and they still give it freely, without condition. It is truly humbling.
As an artist and author, I’m supposed to explain how my abusive parents and harsh childhood environment shaped me into a tortured, sensitive individual with endless layers of complexity, all of which inform my work. My sincerest apologies for the disappointment, but my parents did great with what they had to work with. We weren’t wealthy and nothing came easy, but then pencils and paper made far better playthings than more substantial resources might have afforded. I learned early on that a little vision, a little creativity could fashion entire worlds and millennia of history outside of the known universe. I am ever grateful to my parents and grandparents for fostering this imaginative bent in me, and to my wife and kids for encouraging me to continue.
The only downside to being more imaginative than focused is a propensity for spreading one’s interests too widely. I spent fifteen years working toward an undergraduate degree, mostly full-time throughout. Ok, that’s not entirely accurate. I spent fifteen years as an undergraduate student, working toward numerous majors, each more distracting than the last. I’ve majored in music composition and performance, psychology, physics, studio art, and information systems. Eventually, I did graduate and even spent another couple of years earning a master’s degree as well, though I believe this was simply academic momentum at work.
I still dabble in all these areas and each has generated in me a love for the art of communication. Whether by means of the written word, a compelling drawing, or a dramatic passage of music, we are made for interacting with one another. My ambition (short of world domination) is to offer my most imaginative thoughts and feelings in a way that is worthy of your time and attention.
